It was, as the guards said, the "Humanitarian thing to do" to allow the prisoners to escape from cells that were FLOODING and they thought a "tsunami was coming". Being put in jail for robbery, for example, should not mean a DEATH SENTENCE.
To label people as "criminals" and then make them into sub-humans with no rights, is to deprive ALL of us of rights.

I agree, but I bet the ones that came back to serve out their sentence weren't the "including rapists, kidnappers and drug dealers,".
