SPORTING clubs and community groups could find themselves drinking to new-found wealth if a Victorian MP's push for a compulsory 10-cent refundable deposit on drink bottles and cans is adopted in the nation's fight against pollution.

About time. We have had a 5 cent refund in South Australia for decades. While the contents of the cans and bottles have gone up the refund hasn't and it is the assertion of the drink companies that the costs will need to be passed on to the consumers if the refund goes up!! Corporate greed is out of control.
I am also for putting a $5 levy on plastic shopping bags at the end of the year. Green bags are 99 cents and are reuseable. Calico bags cost even less.If the plastic bags cost $5 each people would buy green or calico bags AND remember to take them when they go shopping and save a lot of marine life that die horrible deaths from swallowing kilograms of plastic. Refunds everywhere possible to encourage recycling is a fantasic thing and will save money and the environment and probably create more jobs.

Samantha, a funny story about your 5c refund. We have friends who live at Old Reynella, who migrate North every Winter for 3 months. Not only so they scour the op shops and garage sales the whole 3 months they spend in Hervey Bay, but they also collect cans, which they take back home ... under disguise of collecting litter, but we know that Jim, who is over 70, would still have the lunch money from his first day at school!!!

I remember standing in line to return the bottles and cans at the store as I was growing up. Since the state I live in now doesn't have that I make a weekly trip to the recylcing places.
Noted with thanks, Chrissy.

In the US, I remember when the bottling plants were complaining that the change from deposit biottles to aluminum cans would be too expensive... but then, there was MUCH less litter about, at least as far as bottles went -- everyone would save them and take them back when they purchased new to save the cost of the deposit... and as for that statement about raising grocery cost 10%? That would only occur ONCE if the family brought back the bottles/cns for the deposit...

we all no it works, when you drive into SA what a difference 5cents makes,I'm sure people would not mind the extra payment when you no you get it back, and it would mean cleaner roads and safer beachers, yea there would still be some to lazy to cash them in,but we saw quite a few in SA picking them up and a good job they do .

After years of throw-a-ways, They brought back the refund and a small grocery in my community had to build a room to accomadate the bring-backs. You never heard so much complaining in your life.It was the same family running the store when twenty five years before, EVERYTHING was bring back including milk bottles, How quickly we forget. If you took your carton of six emty coke bottles to the store, you could buy six full bottles for 25 cents.Granted, they were not liter bottles but Pepsi and RC sold 12 ouncers for the same price as Coke and the nation was not OBESE Clara Bielecki
