YOU thought penguins were in gravest danger of extinction from global warming. Now bulldogs, boxers, Pekinese, pugs and French mastiffs are among the breeds of dogs that may not see out many more Australian summers, experts say.

My family had three boxers as I was growing up and even then were aware of the summer heat for them. My Shih Tzu had difficulty in the summer with his breathing made even worse due to his heart defect and long hair. After getting the ok from his vet., I starting shaving him during the summer which did seem to give him some relief, but he had extra special care from me during those hot summer months. While I was warned when I brought him home that he would have a very short life due to the heart defect, he gave me 11 years of wonderful, loving companionship. Never underestimate what love can do!
