Ironic that the dates between the Apollo and Challenger disasters are only apart by a day except for the years of course. I remember I was in school assembly with my daughter when the news came through on that...it was her first day at high school and so very sad.

My daughter was 10 and watching this with her class at school. I was called to come and get her because she was so upset and they could not calm her.
Noted with a moment of respectful silence.

On the morning (in Australia) that this happened, my eldest daughter (9 at the time) awoke crying, telling me that "the rocket had blown up". I had no idea what she was talking about as having only just awoken myself, there was no radio or TV on. Took ages to calm her down, but allowed her to "tell me about it". She described the fact that she had seen people watching a rocket go into space and that when it was high in the sky, it looked like a firework and she knew that everyone in the rocket was dead.

Imagine how I felt, when I later turned on the radio ... swiftly followed by the TV ... and heard about this! I am speaking to her tonight and am going to ask her if she remembers ...
