INDONESIA'S tiger catchers have to protect humans from tigers and protect tigers from humans. The elite teams of rangers and conservationists rush to the scene every time villagers report attacks or sightings of critically endangered Sumatran tigers.

What a great story Tom, thanks for posting this. I do think the problem lie in enroachment on their turf, but how to resolve this?

The article says, "There are only around 250 of the cats left in the wild, against about 1,000 in the 1970s, according to the World Wildlife Fund, meaning Panthera tigris sumatrae could become the first large predator to become extinct in the 21st century."

Their only natural habitat, their home, is being destroyed by illegal logging everyday. Is it any wonder they are fighting back? If this illegal logging doesn't stop soon, they will be gone forever.

This is too bad. The people don't have housing to protect them from attacks, and the tigers are getting mighty hungry. Shame on humans. We are so greedy.

Please note palm oil plantations. Indonesia is cutting down masive amounts of rain forest to grow palm oil for biofuel. Blame the governments, especially in the EU, for promoting the use of biofuel at the expense of the environment. More CO2 damage is being done by this (I think its 7 times) than the cars produce equivalently!

So, the tigers will become extinct so that we can pour cooking oil into our diesel cars!

Gillian,

What you say doesn't surprise me. It's the same in Argentina with soy. Biodiesel is NOT the solution!

Poor tigers. They're so magnificient, and we might lose them.
