Possibly for the first time, a corporation goes on trial for crimes against humanity. Southern District of New York Judge Kimba Wood rejected all but one motion to dismiss by Shell Petroleum, N.V. and other defendants in Wiwa v. Royal Dutch Petroleum.

Hopefully the Judge will not be threatened or killed. He is taking a big risk here. Or is this going to be like Exxon where we the people payed for their oil spill?

Very interesting article, Thanks Tom.
Sue, one way or another, it is always the people who pay. The notion that corporations have "equal" rights as humans is obscene. I recently met a family from this region and the nonsense inflicted on these people is despicable.

About time these corporate companies became accountable to the atrocities that they have inflicted on mankind, and not to mention the evironment. There needs to be a payback time, and they need to stop fleecing and exploiting the poor and defenceless... as God is their Advocate and watches over all... He despises those that exploit the poor.

This has been a long time in coming. For as long as I can recall multi-national corporations, many of them based in the United States, have grievously exploited the poorest people in the poorest nations. Some of the same companies have a more benevolent image here at home. But in the other nations where they are in business it's a different story. Coca Cola for example, is a pro-union company here in the states. But in Mexico, where Coca Cola is one of the largest foreign companies, the company actively engages in union busting. The life of a union organizer in Mexico is at almost constant risk.
