A trio of researchers have calculated the sort of yields we might see if the world took advantage of all the wind power available to it. It's a bit of a thought experiment, but the numbers are still impressive: 40 times the current global electric use.

so much potential for eco friendly power that the oil companies will not allow the world to use.it drivers me bonkers!!

hopefully their studies will include the how-to's as to avoid major bird and bat kills at these sites. the lungs of bat explode in the proximity of wind turbines whilst birds are sliced and diced in the whirling blades. what about solar panels? these should be installed on all new buildings and extra power sold back to the grid. no worries about killing things while these long blades slice through the air.

I have a friend who builds these wind powers. Great story, thanks Tom

This will no doubt cause a lot of hubbabalue but it cost millions to build wind mills. I believe wind power could help but the cost for building them will be passed on to the public. I have a friend who works on the wind mills by servicing them and was informed that if the wind mills are operate best in 5 - 10 mph wind anything faster than that has the potential to damage the mechanisms.
And this comment will cause more hubbabalue but I'd like to see more nuclear power plants built before oil becomes too costly to operate the machinery to build the power plants.
When Seattle's power goes down on flick of the switch's at Hanford will power up Seattle with no problems.

I am a big fan of wind power for home use. I am studying the feasiblity of building a small wind turbine for my home in the mountains. Not for any climate change issue, but because I would like to become more self-sufficient and cut my energy costs. I have visited the experimental wind farm on Beech Mountain many times which is made up of home-sized generators for study.
However I don't think large-scale wind power production will be feasible. Certainly there is enough wind to power the world. But the transmission issues and the NIMBY issues are pretty large. I think nuclear is the way to go now too for large-scale generation.

Before everyone builds these contraptions bear in mind that the ones on California's Altamont Pass kill thousands of birds. So many, in fact, they have to be closed down during some bird migration times. Why doesn't anyone consider nuclear energy which has been safely used in several european countries for years and it doesnt kill birds.
