PETA's New "Save The Whales" Billboard Takes Aim At Fat Women (NOT Satire)

PETA's new billboard campaign in Florida is raising eyebrows and ire among women and health groups. A drawing on billboards in Jacksonville depicts an obese woman with the phrase, "Save The Whales, Lose The Blubber: Go Vegetarian."

They don't realize that they turn more people off to their cause by their ignorance..arrogance and stupidity..

Nothing PeTA does surprises me anymore..They have crossed the lines so many times..Most people get what they really are..There will always be followers..but they are not taken seriously by most people..They are just continuing to make themselves look as bad..as they truly are..

Thanks Tom..

We treat animals abominably, yet we are oh so sensitive and offended by a billboard image. Were any larger women harpooned, dragged on to a ship and had their body parts refrigerated or used for "scientific research"? Get over yourselves, I say.

Hire a certified Fitness Trainer (like me) who can help you lost weight the correct way...proper diet and exercise.

I think all the uproar is lame. If you are that upset about your weight then do something about it. Yes being vegetarian helps allot. They are killing 2 birds with one stone I say. I'm over weight by 50 pounds yet this does not offend me, what offends me is that it is cheaper to buy fast "fake" food at MC Donald's or burger slut than it is to buy good food at your local grocer. Just another way to kill of americans. Stop being concerned about stupid bill boards, get off your couch and find out what is really going on. Use your anger and pent up energy to investigate what is really in your food. Tired of being fat and tired. Feeling made fun of by a piece of paper???! Get up and do something! America is lazy and over sensitive. It has been over run with brats. Stop CRYING and do something.. should I say it again? DO SOMETHING!

Personally..I do not treat any animal badly..never have..never will..So when someone says "we" please speak for yourself..Those that are here do not either..Those that do treat animals bad..will not be phased at all by that sign..They are ignorant..ill bred and cruel..so seeing a sign such as this one..will make them laugh..poke fun at fat people..What is the point of it..who is it supposed to be helping..

There are people who are fat..lazy..and uncaring about what they eat..Is ths billboard going to change them..No..People who choose to over eat meat..dairy..whatever will continue to.. and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves..

So I don't get it..and bottom line is no one should use such a derogatory ad aimed at people..There are sadly people out there who are not overweight because they over eat..There are illness..and or meds that cause some to gain weight..How mean to make fun of heavy people..

Eating meat does not make anyone fat..nor does dairy..its called moderation..and of course being active..exercising..

If anyone needs to get over it..it is PeTA..

I weigh about 112..most I have ever weighed was 120..I have never been fat..but as a human I find that billboard very offensive and am very angry that they are posting such a billboard..be it about children men or women..It should be taken down..

I find it sad that society..(some in it) have become so insensitive..that that think this is okay..And really this has nothing to do with animals..It is a sad group of people who run an organization claiming to help animals feels the pathetic need to make fun of fat people to shame them somehow to not eat meat..
Unbelievable..

Hmmm...why don't they have a fat man in the ad? It seems like the usual sexist carry-on from PETA. Also it seems a mixed message ... do they want to save actual whales ... or for people to go vegetarian -- the message doesn't quite work effectively for either, imho.

Koo J. (92)

btw...I'm not suggesting having a fat man on the billboard, that's a rhetorical question ... but it always seems to be women's bodies that feature in PETA ads.

I agree with Carole,It is plain offensive! Period... HAVE THE OVER WEIGH BEEN HARPOONED?? YES! I SAY WHAT DOES IT IT FEEL TO BE OVERWEIGHT AND HAVE FAT JOKES SLAPPED IN YOUR FACE EVERYDAY??? WERE YOU EVER A FAT TEEN??? HORRIBLE!! PETA NEEDS TO RETRACT AND APOLOGIZE!! THEY HAVE NOT TACT. I DO HAVE A WEIGHT PROBLEM AND I TAKE MEDICATION WHICH MAKES IT WORSE. I GAINED 100# IN ONE YEAR. I HAVE WORKED TO LOSE WEIGHT FOR YEARS IT GOES UP AND DOWN! I NEVER GET TO BE THIN.Thanks,Tom

I think that this billboard enforces obsolete stereotypical behavior. I am a vegetarian and I am heavy.PETA should retract its statement and apologize. Thank goodness I care more about the whales and can ignore these comments because otherwise they would have totally turned me off to their cause.

Well, I guess one way to get attention is to be controversial... and offensive. Look at Rush Limbaugh! Hey, maybe he should be up there on the billboard ;) Just kidding. Making fun of fat people isn't nice or acceptable. People have different metabolisms, and a lot has to do with how much sugar you were fed as a baby, what kinds of food you ate a kid, etc. Although I'll make an exception for Rush because he's so mean to other people.

I agree with Claudia, Tierney, Juanita, and Nora J.
And its so effective, the issues of obesity, unhealthy diets and animal rights have been bought into the media spotlight and the information is now reaching the people that traditional campaigns do not. There is logic and method to Peta's madness and they are incredibly effective and efficient at getting things actually done. I find it more alarming that people will make a huge fuss about their sensibilities being offended (a typical selfish ego based response) but they dont blink an eye at the horiffic suffering caused by the meat industry.

PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman would do well to share a more compassionate side ... that's a win=win to me !
Saving the whales is a serious business so I would suggest thata Ms. Reiman get real or get lost!

People can care about animals and about human rights at the same time. Exploiting or degrading various humans to get their point across about animals isn't terribly wonderful, imho. There's gotta be better ways!

I don't have anything against PETA or anyone who has, but that billboard having that certain picture was rude. They could have just put a whale on it, not a human. That was very rude and offending. if they're ethical with animals, they should give respect to humans, too.

Thanks for the news.

This month PeTA and PCRM have offended the President using his daughters, created a Ronald McDonald Happy meal box that shows graphic images (I believe the average age child eating a Happy Meal is about 5-6) and the whale billboard. And we allow the a 501(c) tax break just like we give your church or local college.

Join the 171,900 thousand people who want to stop allowing PeTA to get 3 million a year as a tax break.

The overweight body is NOT offensive to me. The thing I find most offensive about this ad is the blatant bias. It has singled out an identifiable group of people and exploited them to push PETA's agenda. There is no need to criticize and insult people to send the message that killing whales is not conducive to the well-being of the earth. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society does this very effectively; PETA could learn something from them.

also, for the record, meat is associated with obesity among many other things (diabetes, colon cancer, heart disease, etc)

no.. man REALLY... do they think one oese person is gonna go vegatarian after this????

though, Im sure they are all havin a great time, patting each other on the back over their very "CLEVER" advertising tactics...

(Wont save the life of a single whale!) Wonder how much this advertising cost?

Okay so I need to clarify that I am not vegitarian I am human wich means I'm an omnivor. I'm over weight because of qute a few reasons and yes I was an over weight kid. I spent my 20 s thin. I love my body no mater what. PETA is another issue. I don't agree with some of the things they do to promote themselves that is why I don't support them. To me they are just another big business. My biggest concern is over weight Americans. I recently took action on my weight issue because I want to be in controls of my life. I have so much to say on the eating habbits of Americans and what the Government allows as safe for us to eat. So I guess I should just tell you to go to YouTube and type in esoteric agend. Watch that and give me some real feed back not just words. And yes I should not sum up America as we. There are actually people left that care. I just hope there are enough left to actually tacke back what is rightfully ours. LET FREEDOM RING! I don't mean to ofend. I just want some action.

I am disgusted and outraged. It's totally inappropriate and PETA is already a shady operation to begin with. I will be sure to discourage everyone I know from supporting and participating in anything having to do with them. To me it's not about if you fat or not - this organization is shameful...

I have to agree with Dee as well, personally. And after having had a good look at this article, the billboard, etc and reading all the comments, I believe that the ad would have been more effective if whales had NOT been mentioned! Seems the objective is to encourage people to stop eating meat, but in the USA, how many people eat whale meat? By choosing another slogan with a different image of "bad meat-eating practice", no one would have been offended and people could have related to the advertisement better. Just my thoughts!

It just seems to me to be a version of the bumper sticker that you used to see on "Bogan's" cars everywhere that read "Save The Whales-Harpoon A Fat Chick"; pretty base humour and not likely to attract anti-whaling activists, fat chicks, fat anybody or anyone with an IQ. Plus on a humour level PETA"s version REALLY sucks.

This is yet another example of why I have spent years in animal rescue, worked with many organizations (including my own), collaborated with many others and financially support several worlwide efforts..and yet will never support PETA. They are frequently militant, inappropriate and regularly alienate people from the cause. If people are part of the problen, then they are also part of the solution. You do not get support and come to a consensus or solution by incensing those whose behavior you would like to alter or whose support you desire. Harmony is not achieved by promoting adversity.

I don't care if you're fat or thin, this is offensive to everyone. Seriously, PETA should take it down and issue an apology, but that'll never happen. Most people I know think PETA is a big joke, and I do too. This just cements it for me. I am fat but not because of eating fast food or fried crap, the medication I take has kept me fat despite exercising every day and eating healthy. I don't eat a lot of meat either, but I'm still fat. The fact that they were tactless enough to use this lame excuse of an anti-whaling ad is enough for me to throw in the towel completely with PETA. I am disgusted and I will tell everyone I know not to support them until this has been righted, which I doubt will ever happen. Aren't there better ways to go about trying to bolster support for their anti-whaling campaign? Yes it's horrible and I do not support whaling of any sort anywhere, but this ad is not going to get support from anyone, regardless of how much they weigh. Anyone with half a brain knows that this is not the way to go about trying to get people to support them. And why does it always have to be women? There are a lot of fat men out there too. What this needed to be was not a crack at overweight people but a serious ad about anti-whaling, instead it's just a hugely offensive joke. Way to go PETA, you've shot yourself in the foot AGAIN! And one more thing that is so completely lame that I had to laugh...SEA KITTENS? SERIOUSLY? Lemme guess, this is their stupid way of trying to make kids feel bad for eating fish by making it seem like they're eating kittens, why don't they just come right out and say DON'T EAT FISH or something like that, not like it's going to stop people! I haven't run into anyone yet who doesn't think that it's lame. PETA is laughable, it's nothing but a joke now, and they are really running out of good ideas fast. Whoever was in charge of this one should be fired and let loose in a room full of angry fat people. Maybe they'd think twice (although from the way things have been going, they don't seem to be too high up there on the IQ scale)...

Personally, the fact that this billboard is getting as much response as it is just shows that people are noticing it and reading it....

Don't care if it is a rail think person, heavy, whatever...The person who posed for this was mostly paid, or did it because it was something she believed it...

Personally I don't see the issue...

OK, I do stand corrected, after putting on my glasses, it looks like a painting of a person. Not an actual photo...but I still think it is doing its job.

Alot of things that PETA do I DO NOT AGREE WITH AND HAVE DISCONTINUED MY MEMBERSHIP, but this seems fine to me and SHIT if a photo of someone heavy helps to save the whales, who cares????

"Alot of things that PETA do I DO NOT AGREE WITH AND HAVE DISCONTINUED MY MEMBERSHIP, but this seems fine to me and SHIT if a photo of someone heavy helps to save the whales, who cares???? "

Marilyn s. Would you feel the same about any image used? A whale to advertise a weight loss program? There are many ways to get a point across. Inflaming the people who could be your allies is generally not a good way to get support. People may have noticed and be talking, but I'm not hearing them talk about what could be done or what they will do for the whales. If PETA wanted to demonstrate the plight of whales, then they would have been better served to show the damage being done to a whale. Its not always about getting the attention and no, whatever it takes to get the attention is not an exceptable philosophy for many people

Well, sorry if I offended you with MY OPINION...we all have our own OPINIONS and if mine doesn't work with yours that is OK with me....

Just was pointing out the fact, that since this bill board was so controversal, it did create A LOT of attention...Yes...it was DONE in the WRONG way...personally, would of liked to have a different board up, but HEY, if somethings gets the word out, it is great...PETA, doesn't really have my support anymore, but when I was younger I did have a fur coat that my Ex-Husband bought for me which I never would wear even though I was going to a lot of expensive functions.....

In that way, they did TEACH me a lesson, when I was so stupid not to get the message when I was only 30...Nothing was out there then, I personally DO NOT APPROVE of their EXTREME MEASURES, and do not support them anymore, but just to let you know...they are trying to get a message out there anyway they can about these precious whales...Frankly, when I was quite heavy I would of posed at no cost to get the job done....Just my opinion! and, like I said, we are all have our own "MINDS" (OR I TRULY HOPE WE DO!!!!)...unless we are totally stupid people. THE NEWS HAS TO GET OUT SOMEHOW....PLEASE TELL ME HOW YOU WOULD PRESENT A BILLBOARD TO STOP KILLING WHALES...FRANKLY I TRULY AM INTERESTED IN "YOUR" OPINION.

I REALLY DO LIKE THE OPINIONS OF THE PEOPLE HERE AT CARE2 AND WELCOME THEM, AS WELL AS I TRULY VALUE EACH AND EVERY PERSON HERE THAT TRIES TO HELP...

IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE DAMAGE THAT HAS BEEN DONE TO A WHALE (NOT ONLY BY THE JAPAN GOVERNMENT, BUT ALSO THE UNITED STATES FISHERMEN.)..JUST CLICK ON ONE OF CHER'S STORIES ABOUT A FEMALE WHALE THAT WAS CAUGHT IN A NET AND BROKE FREE, STILL SHE HAD ALL OF THESE HOOKS FROM THE NET IN HER...AND SHARKS WERE ALL AROUND HER...WHAT USE WOULD THAT PICTURE SERVE???...ACTUALLY, I DO THINK IT WOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED SINCE IT WOULD BE TO GRAPHIC.

I don't know if your response or your yelling was directed to me. I asked a question and I never said your opinion was offesnsive. I am however entitled to mine as well. Commenting as to going and seeing the whale on Cher's site demostrates my point. If PETA was concerned about the whales and that was what they were trying to engage here, the billboard would not have included a fat woman and a tagline of "Lose the blubber; go vegetarian". This is what people are finding offensive.

Since you've asked. I would have a billboard that addressed the issue of the whales and the torture and brutality they are subjected to. Other agencies are able to do it. It addresses the issue directly and focuses on those who are doing the deed. It doesn't sideswipe another group on the sly with a play on words and a different agenda. Very few if any Americans are eating whale meat. So going vegetarian is really not going to solve the problem for the whales.
