134 trillion could be the world's population in 2300. And we'll reach 6.66 billion in April 2008. Feeding so many people could be an even greater threat than climate change. More cattle will be needed to provide meat, forests will be chopped down.

Privacy International has released its 2007 map of surveillance societies around the world. The US is in the black (endemic surveillance society). Australia is in the red ("systematic failure to uphold safeguards"). Where is your country on the map?

Top 10 reasons why Australia is now in the grips of an endemic surveillance society. Civil liberties are being attacked, police powers have escalated, there is a campaign AGAINST human rights for Australia. It's 1984 Big Brother.
The Modern Surveillance State

With the War on Terror, getting into the US is not easy. Less foreigner artists and performers are allowed entry to the US because of strict P-1 visa regulations. The modern surveillance state is killing off the arts & cultural exchange.

Did you know that there might be webcams in changing rooms? Or that there are 30 million surveillance cameras in the USA & the average American runs the chance of being snapped 200 times per day? Are webcams voyeuristic or protective?

We tend to get caught up in talk over carbon emissions, carbon offsets, doing our bit to save the planet and so on. All good. But.... what will be the security implications of a planet heating up? Forced migration; disease epidemics; water wars; extinctions

7 stories from around the word that are curious and heartwarming: woman wrestles snake to save dog; squirrels' tails heat up; goats & planes; tinfoil hats & conspiracy; group hug for burglars; cats in the Outback; crabs in the Roman Forum.

Kim

Firearms shops in the US are stocking pink rifles and shotguns to encourage girls to get into shooting. The Gander Mountain hunting store in Waukesha stocks several pink guns and they use the slogan "Shoot like a girl if you can". Sad but true.

An elderly nun was recently frisked by US airport security - check out the photo. The security officer appeared to be Muslim and there was a bored bystander. What does this picture say about our post 9/11 society? Are we offended by a nun being frisked?

Proposed legislation will give power to the Australian Federal Police to censor internet sites they believe to be crime or terrorism related. It was hurried through Senate. Greenpeace has been accused of terror-related stuff, will they be shut down?
