The airport x-ray machines are not safe. And for over a year, TSA has been defying a court order.

corect: them scanner are not safe. They ARE damaging. About a few orders of magnitude less damaging than flying a few hours in an airliner for the passenger and several orders of magnitude less damaging than flying is for "Earth"('s living communities)

" 15-second-long [TSA "full body"] scan is equal to about an hour of normal background radiation "
wiki>> The worldwide average background dose..is about 2.4 millisievert (mSv) per year
2.4 mSv / y * 1 h = 2.7E-4 mSv

* wiki/Banana_equivalent_dose ...... 0.0001 mSv = 0.1 ÁSv
TSA-scan: 2.7E-4 mSv = 0.00027 mSv = 2.7 BED
# smoking 1 cigarette = 1.2E-3 mSv = 0.0012 mSv = 12 BED =~ 4 TSA-scans (( considering only the amount of dosage, not it's location. I, for one, would considerably prefer to be radiated on my skin than in my lungs ))
# airliner (10 km) 0.2 mSv

" [S]hort of setting fire to a forest, flying is the single worst thing an ordinary individual can do to cause climate-change. " -- Lisa Guy in "The Age of Stupid" (2009) (imho:) *highly recommendable*

FLYING == (contribution to) MASS MURDER
(and no amount of GreenWashing can help that)

For years now well-known: many more people are injured+killed by pollution from planes (same for cars, of course) than by accidents. And this is killed NOW, NOT taking into account long-term effects (like the imminent Environmental Holocaust)

correction (hope this works:)
# airliner (height ~ 10 km) ~ 0.01 mSv/h
# airliner (10 km) ~ 0.2 mSv/day
* flight NY-Tokyo = 0.1 mSv (http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/T110322004943.htm)
TWO TSA-scans 365 times => 0.2 mSv
