One of the problems has been this global economy. When local fishermen, in their smaller boats went out to fish they could only bring back so many fish that would fit in those small boats. It supported the local fishermen and a local economy, the locals ate the fish.

Once these fish were introduced all over the world, more fish were needed to feed extra mouths who now wanted a fish that wasn't a local fish for them. Larger boats and trawlers were now catching fish enmass, out on the high sea other Countries, whose people now wanted those fish got involved as well.

We need to get back to the local economies and eating what is common for the area. The amount of fuel that is used to ship products of all sorts around the world is polluting our environments as well as causing overharvesting of many products, not just fish. Humans in their greed has turned the tables upon themselves and now fewer can make a living, fewer are eating fresh foods, fewer everything.

Soylent green anyone? There will reach a breaking point, either people perish by lack of food or a new way to feed the masses will have to exist. Only the Elites will be able to have a nice cod fish on their plate, the rest of the people will get pretend food in the form of crackers to eat.

Terribly depressing but not surprising. We are killing our planet and the "powers that be" don't give a rat's ass. So sad. Thanks for the article Kevin!!

How do you sustain a population of only 100 in the North Sea?

Very disturbing. They must be left alone if there is to be any chance of their recovery.

Fish stock depletion and most North Sea cod stocks in particular are serious issues but this figure was a serious misunderstanding of the science. See
