Anthrax is a bacterium, and not a virus.

Anthrax is serious because of the highmortality rate, and seems to exist worldwide.
Grazers like Hippos ingest the spores, which can live for 3/4 of a century, so even burial sites remain contagious for that long.
Although I seem to remember that ultraviolet can disinfect - kill spores, don't take my word for it. Thespores exist to protect the bacteria from oxygen. Since the disease is nearly always fatal in its 3 forms (skin,inhalation/pulmonary, ingestion/gastrointestinal), it's good to know exactly where an animal dead from this disease is.
Most anthrax cases seem to be in SouthAsia, related to sheep and goat herds.

This sounds like an isolated outbreak rather than an epidemic.

Noted! And very heartbreaking. I certainly hope they find out what is wrong and eradicate it along with the poachers!
