TAKE ACTION! SIGN! Animals Petition: Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester NY: Require Majority of Otterness' Commission Go to Local a

It is unconscionable that Tom Otterness should receive a hefty commission for an art project from the Memorial Art Gallery & the University of Rochester. Forgiveness is one thing, accountability is another. There may be healing if he donates to animals.

From the petition author:

"Rochester NY's Memorial Art Gallery (MAG, www.mag.rochester.edu) has announced that a major sculptural installation by Brooklyn artist, Tom Otterness will anchor a new Centennial Sculpture Park on the grounds of MAG, in time for their 100-year anniversary in 2013. Work is already underway for Otterness' sculptures. The project which is MAG's largest art acquisition ever will be underwritten by the Gallery's Maurice R. and Maxine B. Forman Fund for art acquisition.

In 1977, Tom Otterness adopted a rescue dog from a shelter, then chained her to a fence, shot her, and filmed her agonizing death. He then set his snuff-film, "Shot Dog Film", on a loop to view over and over, claiming he did this as a form of "art". Since then, Otterness has verbally apologized to the public, yet we the undersigned recognize this as little more than lip-service for this crime.

It is unconscionable that Tom Otterness should now receive a hefty commission for an art project from the Memorial Art Gallery and the University of Rochester. Forgiveness is one thing, accountability is another. There may be some healing ... for the animals, for our community, and perhaps for the artist himself if Otterness were required to donate a large portion of his profits to animal causes.

WE THE UNDERSIGNED REQUEST THAT AT LEAST HALF OF THE COMMISSION TOM OTTERNESS IS TO RECEIVE FROM ROCHESTER NY's MEMORIAL ART GALLERY MUST BE DONATED TO LOCAL ANIMAL RESCUES. WE FURTHER REQUEST THAT THIS AGREEMENT MUST BE WRITTEN INTO THE CONTRACT BETWEEN THE MEMORIAL ART GALLERY AND ARTIST/SCULPTOR, TOM OTTERNESS, IMMEDIATELY."

Since this story is more than two years old, it has no chance of success. Work began early in 2010 and I'm quite sure this despicable pond scum has already spent/invested his blood money. He is slime and scum! There are other ways to deal with his acts of unspeakable cruelty!

Agreed wholeheartedly, Dan, agreed. That this man is given the time of day by art outlets is mind blowing. He should be permanently banned. Instead, he's flourishing and making a great living at it, in spite of it all. This shows how little integrity the art world has....and how easy it is to literally get away with murder.

signed and commented, and noted. We have to stop allowing people to get away with animal abuse...and this was truly heinous and brutal. This was an innocent animal in great need of love and care. He abused everything about that dog, and showed himself as a heartless brute.

I have been in contact with them. The snobs seem okay with this parasite's actions and even refer to it as art. I asked them if they would feel the same way if someone would do that to a human being. They actually told me that under the right circumstances, yes it would be art. Those people are not people. They are sick and depraved monsters, thirsty for blood, feasting on the flesh of our decaying society. You should see the letter I wrote them. It's too long to post as a comment.

I have begun an inquiry to see if there is any way to held them accountable under law, but one way we can hurt them is in their wallet! I think it's time to give them some very bad publicity about the truth of their sculptor, and their acceptance of his deplorable, criminal behavior before their big grand celebration when they officially unveil all his work.
