Bill & Lou have worked as draft animals on the school's farm for over 10 years. They've provided many services for the college, are mascots/friends to students past & present. Since Lou has an injury to his left rear hock both will be slaughtered! ACTION!

These "beloved" oxen have been condemned to slaughter after ten years of hard work and service! Read their story below, immediately sign the petition, then pop off a fast email to the boneheads who are going to kill these beings after they've done nothing but toil and sacrifice their entire lives for humans!

Please help and send a heartfelt, courteous email to the following people:

Bill Throop Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs:

throopw@greenmtn.edu

Kenneth Mulder Farm Manager, Research Associate & Adjunct Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies:

mulderk@greenmtn.edu

THEY DESERVE TO BE SENT TO VINE SANCTUARY! ACT NOW AND SPREAD THE WORD OF THEIR PLIGHT! THEY LITERALLY HAVE DAYS LEFT! HOP ON IT! There is also a link at the bottom of the page for a Facebook petition....sorry, Facebook members only for that one. Make sure to sign and share the one below at the Care2 Petition site!

POULTNEY, Vermont. - Oxen team Bill and Lou have been beloved hard workers at the Green Mountain College farm for 10 years. "They would plow and cultivate, and spread their manure and the manure of other animals," said Ben Dube, a research assistant. The oxen are part of the farm's plan to be fossil-free. Instead of tractors, Bill and Lou do the work. But this summer, Lou suffered an injury and can barely walk. And Bill can't pull the plow alone. "Doing any work with them is a question. Even putting them in the yoke and not pulling anything," Dube said. The school already bought replacements, but kept Bill and Lou as pets until they could collaborate with the students, who were on summer break, about Bill and Lou's fate. "Because it is an educational, sustainable farm, we think we've got to help students understand how to make farms work ecologically, socially and economically," said Bill Throop, the provost at Green Mountain College.
The consensus: to slaughter Bill and Lou for meat. This would save the school from purchasing meat from a factory for at least a month.

http://www.wcax.com/story/19782348/gmc-oxen-pair-headed-to-slaughterhouse

VINE Sanctuary is ready to take these animals in for a peaceful life after all their contribution to their human owners. And despite many voices from around the world calling for the release of Bill and Lou to the sanctuary, the college authorities have remained determined to send the two retiring oxen to slaughter.
Indeed this heartless decision makes no sense because no one is starving at the college hall and these hard workers who shared the workload of their human companions on their back now deserve to live their natural life, whatever of it is left, in peace.

Noted, and signed...I just can't understand why the Administration of this School would do something like this...It isn't going to cost them 1 cent to have the Sanctuary take these Oxen to live out their lives in peace, and comfort...Why would they instead want to have these lovely creatures slaughtered, and then serve them in the School Cafeteria> How can they be so cruel, and cold hearted? I hope they change their minds...

Thank you for posting. Petition previously signed. emails sent from home. A win-win situation for not only the Oxen, but the faculty and students who care about the oxen, and the reputation of the college, the public outcry at large - would be to make the simple choice to send them to sanctuary. Everyone wins ! But apparently, the heads don't see it that way. This is more than just having "meat" for a month. This is about driving home their perspective that animals are merely utilitarian. I can only hope that they will wish to protect their reputations, because that is the most they can feel.

Colleges & universities have the ridiculous practice of live mascots. It's incredulous that they refuse to take responsibility for them as well. That does NOT mean that the animals end up in a slaughterhouse when they've outlived their usefulness.

So much for an institute of "higher" learning.

Noted & Signed petition. And also sent the following letter as it is imperative that we contact these men through letters as we don't have much time left and personal letters can often have a greater impact than just signing petitions. I urge everyone to do both for Bill and Lou whose lives are in such peril!

Sent the following letter to:
Bill Throop Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs:
throopw@greenmtn.edu

Kenneth Mulder Farm Manager, Research Associate & Adjunct Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies:
mulderk@greenmtn.edu

Dear Sir,

I respectfully request that you spare the lives of Bill and Lou by sending them to Vine Sanctuary who is ready to take these animals in for a peaceful life after all their contribution to their human owners.

Bill & Lou have worked as draft animals on the school's farm for over 10 years. They've provided many services for the college, are mascots/friends to students both past and present. Since Lou has an injury to his left rear hock, I now hear that both will be slaughtered!

There are other important lessons in life that students need to learn in college such as compassion, and what loyalty means to others as Bill and Lou were so much more to the school than just animals who performed labor. They indeed were friends, mascots, and pets and an important part of so many students' school lives at Green Mountain College. Character building is also an important part of the culture of learning and not every experience that one has can nor should be just translated into dollars and cents.

After serving this school for 10 years with their steadfast work of hard and backbreaking labor, these oxen finally deserve the opportunity to live out the remainder of their lives in a Sanctuary. In fact, this is why Lou injured his left rear hock from working so hard and diligently for his human companions. I please urge you to now show them the same consideration and loyalty by sending them to Vine Sanctuary to live out the remainder of their lives.

The students as well as many who work for Green Mountain College will be happier with this decision knowing that these animals will finally be able to live out the rest of their lives in a peaceful and pastoral setting and also the chance to go visit these animals that they have bonded with rather than seeing them heartlessly shipped off to be slaughtered! This will give them a much greater feeling of peace in knowing that the right decision was made in considering their lives and well-being which Bill & Lou are so deserving of.

This would also be a feather in Green Mountain College’s cap to be able to say that they acted out of the highest qualities of mankind- his compassion and ethical reasoning following in the footsteps of such giants as Albert Schweitzer, Arthur Schopenhauer, Immanual Kant, and Albert Einstein who all believed that compassion toward all animals must be an essential part of mankind’s character if we are to live in peace with each other and live up to our greatest human potential.

"Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty."
-Albert Einstein

"Because the heart beats under a covering of hair, of fur, feathers, or wings, it is, for that reason, to be of no account?" -Jean Paul Richter

"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace."- Albert Schweitzer

“Life is as dear to the mute creature as it is to a man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not to die, so do other creatures.” -His Holiness The Dalai Lama

Respectfully,

Julia Richards,

Thank you dear friend Myraida for the bravebirds blog. It reads:

"Memo to Green Mountain College Board of Trustees
By bravebird, on October 15th, 2012

Green Mountain College has posted an evidently official refusal to reconsider the decision to slaughter Bill and Lou on its Facebook page. We could–and probably will–go line by line, pointing out the inconsistencies and inaccuracies. However, it seems clear that the college administrators—perhaps due to a combination of Groupthink and the confirmation bias–are too set in a defensive stance to either dispassionately decide what is best for the college or compassionately decide what is best for Bill and Lou.

Therefore, we have mailed off this memo to the Green Mountain Board of Trustees. (This follows a letter from the co-founder of VINE Sanctuary, asking the President to either show mercy and stay the order of execution or delay the slaughter until the Board of Directors has a chance to meet and discuss the question.)

To: Board of Trustees, Green Mountain College

From: VINE Sanctuary

Date: 15 October, 2012

Re: Formal request for inclusion in agenda of next meeting

The decision to send the oxen known as Bill and Lou to slaughter rather than accept the offer of a retirement home at VINE Sanctuary has raised an international outcry that threatens the reputation and academic credibility of the college as well as its ability to raise funds from alumni. Since administrators associated with the decision may be too invested in it to dispassionately consider alternatives, we ask that the Board of Trustees direct the President to delay the slaughter until after the Board has the opportunity to meet to decide the question.

Educational institutions generally greet offers of sanctuary for retired animals with gratitude, so we have been mystified by the response of Green Mountain College. Prominent scholars in the fields of ethics, ethology, animal studies, and environmental studies also have expressed their mystification. We welcome the opportunity to inform the Board on this matter and respectfully ask to be informed of the procedure by which we may sign up to address the Board at its next meeting."

Julia, you are a passionate and eloquent animal welfare warrioress, and I am proud to call you my friend. Deeds, not words. You ALWAYS go the extra mile and take proactive action on behalf of animals in need. All my stars to you, my amazing friend.

For every action there is a reaction. According to the law of karma, if we cause

pain and suffering to other living beings, we must endure pain and suffering in

return, both individually and collectively. We reap what we sow, in this life and

the next, for nature has her own justice. No one can escape the law of karma.

This is a perfect example of _man's inhumanity.
Where are people's morals?
Are we becoming so hardened that we don't care about our animal cousins?
Are animals only permitted to live, if they provide us with service or food?

I guess they forgot about the other BILLIONS of animals 'processed' for their flesh already and can care less that these animals have been slaves for 10 years and DESERVE to live in peace.
I heard a similar situation recently where some animals were used in a 4H program. I m not sure of why, but they plan on killing the animals and SERVING THEM to the students.
people have LOST THEIR DAMN MINDS, and Im SICK OF IT.
I really wish humans with this mindset would evaporate or something...

Thanks Michelle for this post and your eloquent letter to the Board also..please keep us posted as to the outcome of this horrid situation. I really can't understand the reasoning behind these people deciding to kill such faithful and lovely animals....the students really need to rally behind this cause.....can't someone organize this?

IS IT TIME TO REALLY WORRY ABOUT THE MINDSET OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD IF THEY CAN BE THIS CRUEL TO OLD LOYAL SERVANTS THAT THEY WOULD DENY THEM THE CHANCE TO LIVE OUT THEIR TIME IN PEACE, DONT THEY KNOW ANIMALS HAVE A RIGHT TO RETIRE TOO IS IT TIME TO REPLACE THE PORKERS AT THE HEAD OF THE FARM.?
CONSIDERED IT SIGNED.

Isaac Bashevis Singer Nobel Peace Prize Winner wrote in his book, 'Enemies a love story', "As often has Herman had witnessed the slaughter of animals and fish, he always had the same thought. In their behaviour toward creatures, all men were Nazi’s. The smugness with which man could do with other species as he pleased exemplify the most extreme racist theories the principle that might is right. Lest we forget!

These animals should be cared for and if not able to work anymore, retired with lifetime care. These are living animals not an old car that can't do.

THE TIME IS RUNNING OUT. THE COLLEGE IS NOT CHANGING THE SLAUGHTER PLAN OF BILL & LOU. ACT TODAY!

The oxen ARE STILL scheduled to be slaughtered end of October. We need you to please ACT today! Keep up the pressure!

From Vine Sanctuary: "writing with an update. Sadly, as of October 22, Bill and Lou are still scheduled to be slaughtered, but that is NOT stopping us. We are prepared to fight this through to the end, which we will do everything possible to ensure is NOT bitter. It is critical right now to KEEP UP THE PRESSURE. Contact media, contact the Town of Poultney, VT, US, contact Green Mountain College, contact the Board of Trustees of the school, call and write and email and make it clear that even if they murder these two individuals, we will NOT forget."

Leave Mr. Throop & Mulder a polite comment and urge them to change their mind AND send them polite e-mails as well:
Bill Throop's Phone number: (802) 287-8214, throopw@greenmtn.edu
Kenneth Mulder phone number: 802-287-2941, mulderk@greenmtn.edu

Urge the local media to write about Bill and Lou again:
