I should not have noted this damn story, because it sure does not belong on the front page.. why did you post a petition for a wolf that has been tracked and tortured and brutally gunned downed...first we searched for him for a month and then finally found his HIDE in a TANNING shop... this is what happened to OR16... so ya... totally legal..and devastating... crushed the people involved...which i was one of!

Oregon : OR16 Who Crossed Over From Oregon Into Idaho Last Month , Confirmed KILLED :( *Cries*

OPB | Jan. 24, 2013 2:19 p.m. | Updated: Jan. 25, 2013 12:33 p.m.

An Oregon wolf that had the misfortune of crossing into Idaho has been killed.

The conservation group Oregon Wild announced Thursday that the wolf known to biologists as OR-16 was shot Saturday near Lowman, Idaho, becoming the second Oregon wolf to be killed in Idaho as part of that state's recreational hunt since the endangered designation was taken away from wolves last year.

After the endangered species protection was removed, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming established recreational killing seasons. As of Wednesday, 958 wolves have been killed in those three states as part of recreational hunts, according to Oregon Wild.

"When wolves were stripped of their protections as part of a political deal in 2011, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming celebrated by opening recreational killing seasons that have now claimed nearly 1,000 wolves -- more than half of the known population in the western United States, Rob Klavins, wildlands and wildlife advocate for Oregon Wild, said in a news release.

Unlike Idaho, Oregon does not allow the sport hunting of wolves but plans for agency staff to kill wolves in response to livestock depredation are under a court-ordered hold, state officials say.

Oregon Wild and other wildlife advocates say this has contributed to an increase in the state's wolf population - with at least 53 wolves and as many as five breeding pairs identified in the state.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story misidentified Oregon's wolf policy as a "wolf-hunting program." OPB regrets the error.

Hi Roxy. I'm not the petition author, just the person who posted in as news. I am saddened by the news that this beautiful creature was murdered and am just as angry and upset as you are. But don't shoot the messenger....and don't accuse me of posting false news. This petition was established by an author you can contact by clicking on the link above and contacting personally with your thoughts and concerns.

Evidently the person who authored the petition cared enough to raise awareness of the situation by authoring a petition. Perhaps they didn't follow through to your liking, but you are entitled to follow up with them by sharing your news and expressing your thoughts.

I post petitions I find relevant and timely as news but don't always get to follow up on every single thing I post. Literally thousands of petitions get posted as news at Care2 each and every day and there is physically no way each and every one can be followed up on. Again, I am devastated by the news that this wolf's life ended, as I am with all of the wolves dying around the world as a result of fear and ignorance. I also appreciate your update.

You need to channel your anger and passion for wolf protection in continued activism. I am not "mean" and my efforts to post this were at heart getting the word out for this poor wolf. I am sorry he was not saved in time.

If you want to blame, call the Obama administration and Ken Salazar's office. They are responsible for this genocide.

Roxy: the petition author is Teresa Hamilton and the petition is still "live." Voice your angst at her for maintaining a live petition after the killing of the wolf, not me for posting a petition I believed might help raise awareness.

Dear Director Ashe,
I am starting this Petition to seek the protection of OR16, On December 19th the yearling wolf OR16, which had recently dispersed from the Walla Walla pack, crossed the Snake River into Idaho. The 85 pound male was captured north of Elgin, Oregon on November 1 and was fitted with a GPS collar which allowed managers to quickly determine that the young wolf was part of the Walla Walla pack in northern Umatilla County. Dispersal of young wolves away from their natal pack into new areas is a normal part of wolf ecology and this is the second radio-collared wolf to disperse from Oregon into Idaho."

We seek it's protection while in Idaho.

Thank You
Teresa Hamilton
