An EU Parliament candidate sparked controversy when she responded to criticism in a letter saying "I would be glad if the so-called proud Hungarian Jews would go back to playing with their tiny little circumcised tail rather than vilifying me."

Any one that speaks like this about any group of people and can still be elected...says something very pathetic about who she represents. This is one time some lye soap might have helped clean up a filthy mouth.

Yes, Kit, I agree. That a candidate for any office anywhere can have such garbage spew from her mouth, shows more about what she is than those she talks about. What a sleezeball. I hope her constituents have more intelligence than this beanbag.

It is astonishing what a supposedly sane person will say at times.

I noticed that while several posters on this site were trumpeting a swing to the right in the EU elections they failed to note that not just the centre right have won seats, but also the extreme right such as the BNP. Expect to hear more of this sort of rhetoric out of Europe in the future. Sanity and politician is an oxymoron Lindsey.

Wow...but the sad thing is, how long will it be before our own politicians say such inflammatory things and not apologize.

antisemitism is never dead. it just rears its ugly head at various intervals and in different places.

that politicians have no fear of retribution or remorse in uttering these atrocities is despicable.

I bet not all "proud Hungarian Jews" have " tiny little circumcised tail"s, the poor lady was just out of luck that day and jumped into conclusions too fast.

Speaking of Hungarians, the first Hungarian name that comes to my mind is Emmerich (Imre) Kálmán. Wanted to mention Vittorio Monti with his great Csárdás as well, but Monti was a great Italian composer, though Csárdás is a Hungarian dance.

Jews lived in Hungariy peacefully for many centuries, why would the lady go wild now?

Antisemitism is not a recent phenomenon in Hungary. It dates back to well before 1939.
Here's an extract from a website about deportees after the second world war. Many Hungarians were happy to be complicit in the persecution of their Jewish population even before the Nazis declared open season on Jews in Hungary.

The active antisemitism of the authorities was not necessarily satisfied with administrative measures. S. E., whose village was returned to Hungary after the break-up of Czechoslovakia, remembers as follows: "With the arrival of the Hungarians in 1939 anti-Jewish measures started with the revocation of business licenses, which was carried out by the gendarmerie, using harsh measures. They beat us, and the residents of the village enjoyed the spectacle."[27] G. H., a seamstress from Ilosva, gave a similar testimony: "The gendarmes returned often and threatened my father to report him and we could carry on only by working for them free of charge."[28] According to the testimony of S. K. from Ungvár: "Even before the German occupation, gendarmes caused lots of trouble to the Jews. They summoned them without any reason with various pretexts. They searched for immigrant Slovak Jews, and would beat everybody up."[29] In the Carpatho-Ruthenian village of Várpalánka the soldiers "broke into some Jewish homes. They went to Munkács every evening and they broke into Jewish houses under the pretext that those were military exercises. They robbed the Jews of every possession and beat them to a pulp. They came back to Palánka at 12 o'clock at night and continued with us. Terrible noises, screams could be heard in the night. We lived through terrible times, trembling in horrible fear; that was the time when I got a heart ailment. The army terrorized the inhabitants all the time and beat Jewish men horribly without any reason."[30]

But all this was just a prelude to the atrocities of 1944 and 1945.

The EU elections are a sad historical reflection of the emergence of Hitler in the 30s, also a time of economic crisis and world corruption. Such inflammatory rhetoric by politicians is indicative of their confidence in the emerging right wing racists scapegoating immigration, as a vehicle for their hateful policies. And the stupid public ask such questions as why did the German people allow Hitler to come to power? It is so very easy to demonise all of a particular group to suit political ends. Blaming any group one cares to mention for our ills. Any intelligent application of commonsense will deconstruct the extremist faster than the normally currupt in politics! Such is the nature of the beast. A good example is the intransigence of the protaganists in the middle east. They are so similar and should all have a homeland but for various illogical reasons they forget to put their brains in gear and take such intolerant standpoints to the exasperation of any impartial observer. They really want there heads banging together and sort out their "differences" before their localised skirmishes play into the hands of the religious extremists who love this Hollywood style, Biblical epic in progress with real blood. A sort of latterday Roman style circus with people killing each other for the onlookers entertainment. Supporters of either side must by definition be party to the awful barbarity of events happening there! Citizens of the EU should remember recent history and not allow a repeat performance in Europe.

Thanks Lindsey. Anti-semitism still lives. In places other than the middle east.

Hate speech has been given a "free pass" on American airwaves for 8+ years ... now it's spreading to the rest of the world and RepubliCON$ are complaining ...

This situation arose in Hungary, Blue. Explain what "Republicons" have to do with it.

What is a "Republicon"? A goodly portion of the Bush Whitehouse had dual citizenship with Israel. Do you mean those guys?

Actually, there is not much difference between Bush and Obama policies....so some of the spirit is still running POTUS.

The Hungarian woman politician is a foul-mouthed fool.

I find it interesting that only the right wing makes headlines with there antisemitism but it's just as prevalent on the far left as well. Everyone knows that Hitler killed millions but Stalin killed probably double Hitlers number. I guess political prisoners doesn't make as much press as does other groups as well. I think that racism\antisemitism needs to be condemned no matter what wing, religious affiliation or political affiliation one belongs to.

This comes before that creep kills a guard in the Holocaust Museum. Can't people come up with better ways to spend
their time than saying and doing cruel things? I think it reinforces the fear many Jews have that there will be another
holocaust.
