WUFFINGTON WAG: "Love Is A Cozy Blanket"---'Operation Blankets of Love'

Animals  (tags: rescued, dogs, cats, pets, AnimalWelfare, animaladvocates, animalrights, protection, humans )

shelter animals who are given blankets and comforters to snuggle on, are more able to relax, feel happy, safe, secure and warm. And because they are more comfortable in their surroundings, and look so cozy, their chances of being adopted are increased.

Thanks, Brenda. Blankets for the dogs is one thing our shelter always is in need of. Last night we had very few clean blankets left, due to our washer being in need of a new motor. All the dogs were provided for, though.

Noted and thanks Brenda. What a great initiative and work by caring people.
Donni M. I hope some generous person/company can donate you a new washer to keep the clean blankets coming for the dogs. Have you got sponsors for your shelter?

what a cool idea to give dogs blankets. that is something they do love. My 3 dogs love thier blankets and dog pillows. My mini doxies are spoiled and love to cuddle under the blankets of my bed. A couple of little bed hogs!!!

Bronwyn, we were able to buy a commercial washer a few years ago, but it is in constant use during the day, just too much for the motor, I guess. We have a new motor ordered, but this comes at a time when we are having financial difficulties as it is. Our shelter is funded through fundraisers and donations, we run a small second-hand shop and get donations of aluminum cans, also. Our volunteers (and 2 (under)paid employees) are determined to keep the shelter going, though. People donate blankets, but the dogs are really tough on them! There is such a need at shelters across the country, monthly expenses run about $7,000 at ours!

Brenda, that would be great! There are a couple of places on the web you can find info on our shelter. One is www.petfinder.com/shelters/ID25.html
Or google Benewah County Humane Society, Hope's Haven.

I rarely make it to yard sales, but those would be great places to pick up items the shelters could use, also.

One shelter in my area is trying to get people to donate inexpensive beds which keep the dogs off the floor. Anything is worthwhile if it helps keep a shelter animal from even greater stress and discomfort.

We collected blankets a couple of years ago for the Battersea dogs home here in England. We told friends and put a notice in our window and even emailed the local paper so other people could help.We ended up making three trips to the dogs home. They were so pleased as it was a very cold winter and they had a shortage of blankets. Sometimes we all have blankets stored away because we use duvets now so what better way to make use of them. I think it is a great idea.Noted.

5 years ago I started this at a shelter I volunteered at (now I also help run( all volunteer not paid) the shelter. EVERY animal that comes in our shelter gets their own blanket. I make hammocks also for the cats/kittens . EVERY animal deserves some comfort!!
Thanks for the story~ Noted

THE SMILING LITTLE DOG IN THE STORY PHOTO IS ALMOST A TWIN TO MY LITTLE "PENNY" I LOST 4 YRS. AGO--(SHE WAS A THROW AWAY I GOT FROM MY VET) PENNY HAD ME FOR 17 YRS. AND WAS THE SWEETEST, KINDEST LITTLE DOG I'VE EVER HAD--SHE HAD SO MUCH LOVE TO GIVE TO "EVERYBODY" SHE MET. THERE ARE THOUSANDS MORE LIKE MY PENNY--ALL THEY WANT IS SOMEONE TO LOVE!

this operation reminds me action in Poland many years ago....was called Teddy Bear....each ambulance must have as standard equipment teddy bear which will help kids to relax and feel less traumatize by travel to hospital..... pets, same like kids, not always understand what is going on and are terrified by strangers, pain and weird smells...that is great idea and I hope will be carry on everywhere :)

Brenda, you are one in a million. Here at our local supermarket we often have 'blankie boxes' just waiting to be filled by caring souls. And it always works! God bless you dear friend.
