These kangaroos did not have to die and have done
nothing to deserve
this fate. They are trapped behind high fences
and despite their
public statements, ultimately the local
government has other plans for
this land.

This is horrendous! In Australia the Kangaroo is like the American Bison her in the USA. They deserve to live and nature will take care of the rest!

I have tried to note this story but it is not working.

As for the 'roos, the killings are nothing short of systematic slaughter of them for more land. This is so unnecessary. Will write.

TY, Brenda.

This is so terrible, any excuse to kill an animal! Where I live, near Melbourne, they are killing 1000 Kangaroos, because the houses have built up around them, and they can't find their way out anymore. Great reason to kill them. Grrr

Please don't buy it for dog food, as it is often sold in petshops. beware, it is not good to fed Kangaroo meat, as the fat composition of the meat is wrong for dogs, and harbours parasites.

Thank you for the contacts. I urge everyone to write. please note Peter Garret once headed up the Australian conservation Foundation and was a well known activist prior to joining the ALP.

I have written the following

I am writing to express strong protest and my disgust at the massacre of kangaroos at the defence base in Canberra,
Yet again Australia is seen to be taking short term actions and putting economic considerations above animal welfare concerns. Yet again we are being judged by the world on antiquated actions in terms of conservation and animal welfare.
This is played out again and again. Our insistence of continuing with factory farming despite this being phased out in other countries, our blind determination not only to continue but to expand our live export trade in the face of irrefutable evidence of cruelty and high death rates on route, continuing to resort to mutilation of wool sheep despite international condemnation and now we are seen to be a country the slaughters its national emblem.
Culling, that is mass killing/massacre, is short term and ineffective. We need to be looking at long term solutions to effective and compassionate coexistence with the animals with which we share our land. When I voted for this new government I thought I was voting for people with vision, compassion, a long term view, and integrity. Apart from the apology to the stolen people, this is certainly not being demonstrated.
I am deeply disappointed and quite frankly I am ashamed to be Australian.
Be great enough to admit this is not appropriate and cease this killing immediately.

Noted. I'm ashamed of the action our Australian Federal Government has taken in dealing with our Kangaroos, our National emblem! Kevin Rudd our Prime Minister stated on radio in the lead up to the election that he would not tolerate animal cruelty; despite this, the cruel 'Live Animal Export to The Middle East' remains, as does the miserable Factory Farming of animals. We must keep campaigning against these atrocities to our animals no matter where we live in this world.
