Horse slaughter plant idea withdrawn
Jan 29 2008 12:16PM
Associated Press
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) Flooded with messAges from across the nation by people who oppose the consumption of horses, a South Dakota legislative committee killed a bill today that would have provided a $1 million loan to construct a plant to process horses.

Before SB170 was killed, however, it was changed to call for a study of horse processing. But that, too, was rejected.

Senator Frank Kloucek (KLOH'-chek) of Scotland says the nation needs such a plant so horses can be humanely disposed of.

Horse slaughter plants in Illinois and Texas have been closed, and Kloucek says there's no place now to dispose of animals that people do not want or can no longer afford.

just a thought-since the Animal Welfare Institute clearly disapproves of their plans, contact them and encourage them to do what they have to in order to protect the horses.

I emailed,since it is a holiday,I don't know when or if I will get a reply
To Whom it May Concern,
I apologize if this is not your correct address for my issue concerned, but it is the only one on your website I located. After reading the news article Animal Welfare Institute Condemns BLM Proposal to Kill Thousands of Wild Horses in Holding Facilities,
I am relieved to know that you clearly disapprove of their proposed actions. I am a proud member of Care2.com, and have been communicating with friends and acquaintences in animal welfare groups about this problem, and together we contacted the PBS tv station to air their documentary Nature: Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies and grateful to them, they are going to rerun it before the deadline to make more people aware of the issue. Many of the members of Care2 are composing petitions and contacting whoever is concerned to try to find solutions.
I don't want to tell you how to do your job, but I trust in your organization to do what is in order to protect the horses. Please do your best to allow these horses to live the life they deserve.

Thank you for your commitment to the animals,
Very Sincerely,

Noted and Thanks Brenda.... this is really great news..To lose the last of a dying breed, the wild mustangs and horses of the western US would be unforgivable for me if i could do just one thing to help. They are an amazing and rooted as deep in history of the US as man, they just can't vanish..we have lost too many things, wildlife, plants, the rainforest, so much to take another loss without a fight.

Noted. What a wonderful piece of work this is! It is certainly welcome news and adds to the ambience of this special day in our history. Thank you, Brenda, for being the spark plug of this campaign for Care2. You are, indeed, one staunch advocate!

A BIG "THANK YOU" TO EVERYONE WHO HAS NOTED-SIGNED PETITIONS-EMAILED-PHONE CALLS-LETTERS-FORWARDED & CROSS-POSTED! IT TAKES "ALL OF US" TO BE THEIR VOICE AND WE HAVE YELLED LONG AND HARD FOR THESE WILD HORSES AND IT AIN'T OVER YET, BUT IT'S A START! I THINK THE BLM IS BREAKING THE LAW--DESTROYING THE HORSES--THEY ARE PROTECTED! I HOPE THE PBS SHOW ON CLOUD WILL SAY SOMETHING ABOUT WHAT THE BLM IS TRYING TO DO TO THEM! THE BLM WAS STOPPED ONCE--THEY CAN BE AGAIN--THE WILD HORSES BELONG TO ALL OF US!!

Hi Brenda - is it possible to get the broadcastors to put something on the screen afterwards re who viewers can contact etc etc????

I understood this involves wild burros as well?? is that so?

Please God that this can be stopped - All I could think of last night was that little foal left to die and of the update of the horse dragged behind the float, shot etc.

We have the same problem in Australi with our Brumby's - there was a recent helicoptor cull of hundreds of horses in Queensland.
