FROM DAPHNE. After the monkey is inebriated, it is placed on the table to await the hungry diners. seal its mouth and tie it tightly under a special table, with a hole in the center, so that only the monkey's head peaked above. Then the monkey's hair was

Noted with such sadness for the monkey's and absolute horror and disgust for the people responsible. The madness just keeps on surfacing.
Cruelty in any form on anyone, human or animal can not be tolerated.

I am also appalled and disgusted. These practices are absolutely intolerable and totally inhumane.
But what can be done to stop these monstrosities?
These people are, if not "crazy" at least degenerate and probably sunk.

Noted. I read the site. Yes it makes you ill. That poor little monkey. Then at the bottom of the page I saw....Do the Chinese really eat monkeys? Do Americans eat deer testicles? The answer to both questions is the same....Why are humans a/holes?

Yes, and bull testicles as well...which disgusts me as much as what the Chinese eat. My HUSBANDS says "Rocky Mountain Oysters" (testicles) are great...but then, he's barely housebroken.

Why cant they be stopped, this is down right dispicable and insane, that poor animal, save all the animals in china, they dont deserve this. I just dont know what to say anymore, I hope they get a terrible outbreak of desease in those countries from all the animals they eat in the most unhigenic way.. I will not feel sorry for them, if anything I will be happy
thats the only revenge those poor animal have... PATHETIC,SELFISH UNHUMAN PIGS...

I thought they quit doing this. How could anyone sit at a dinner table and do this. I hope the monkeys have brain disease and these inhumans catch it. I can't put down what I really want to because care2 will throw me off. I already got a warning from them the other day. Noted with hate. Thanks Brenda and Daphne.

i agree that this is a horrible practice, but i think wishing death and disease on all the people in china is going quite far. its not every chinese person sitting down to tuck into such a 'delicacy' so tarring them all with the same brush is a very narrowminded approach

Didn't anyone follow the link at the top of the page ? It's an urban legend... (same website!)

http://maxent.org/ch/monkey_brains_ref.html

I you heard what they think we eat...

I agree that if it was true, it would be terrible. But it is not.
And if it was, I agree with Jennifer : going from "some people in China eat live monkeys' brains" to "all Chinese people are stupid, cruel and gruesome" is somewhat disturbing...

The more I learn abt hu-mans the more I like the other animals.
Lets remember, though, that we attract the energy we concentrate on. Hate, any negative
thought, action or reaction, attracts more of the same. If we really want more positivity, let's meditate on the energy of forgiveness and enlightenment for those whose spirits are so far back in the shadows.
We all, if pressed to the wall, would eat anything to survive- which's probably what happened
in this case long before some "entrepeneur" come up with the "brilliant idea" of transposing it into "fine dining" (like duck liver pate, live(?)lobster, etc...).
May Spirit give us the strength to endure the knowledge of such barbarity and give us the knowledge & inteligence to bring such practices to an end in our lifetime.

Just as an aside, remember that China's overpopulation is the main contributor to such extreme feeding practices. If family planning and birth control are not practiced worldwide,
we'll definitely see more of the same in even more crude details.
As population increases, arable land, clean water, & natural roaming spaces for other animals decrease. If we continue on the same path of worldwide abuse & destruction by corporations & greedy individuals, we ain't seen nothing yet.
Today I light a candle for all the sweet animals that have given their lives so that many of us
survived hunger and misery.
Let's adopt children & teach them to be compassionate & whole. Let's extend our compassion to all living creatures (I'll believe myself the day I don't automatically have a murderous jerky fit at the sight of a roach, fly, spider, ant, & such).

As Francis B. posted, this is basically an urban legend. There are a few verified cases of it occurring, including among gangsters in the Philippines, but extensive investigation by many different animal welfare organizations and journalists has discovered that almost all reports about people allegedly eating the brains of a live monkey are fabrications. I have looked into several such reports myself, and found only one that appeared to be authentic, involving Japanese military officers who were stationed in China during World War II, whose purpose in eating the monkey brains was apparently to intimidate the Chinese population of the community they were occupying. Several more recent cases that reached the tabloid press turned out to be complete fakes. --Merritt Clifton, editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE.

I know of a Guatemalan soldier who told me that they did such things out in the forest when
they had to fend for themselves. Any animal who came in the their path were eaten in any manner they could fashion it and very little was left of any part of the animal. He said that
real hunger is scary.

China (and most other Asian countries) have a lousy record when it comes to animal welfare. I read one report of vendors severely beating bears before killing them because the beating while alive supposedly makes the meat more tender. I have heard reports of fish being served alive at the dinner table. Some things, of course, are not proven conclusively - others are. They are a barbaric and backwards nation. And they wonder why the western world looks down upon them.

I don't eat meat, use leather belts, shoes, hunt, kill insects. I believe the bar must be set on the ground. All life is presious. As it's lifted all sorts of inhumane things happen. Thou shalt not kill. WHAT? Don't think the "Commandment" specified.

Brenda, it don't see how being a newbie or not is relevant to the fact that I read the disclaimer at the top of the page. I guess I shouldn't have read the critical examination of the article and that I should take Hong Kong tabloids more seriously than American ones...
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/member/member.html?fl20020808zg.htm

BTW, I never said that there was no animal cruelty in China nor that animal rights were respected. I only said that this particular story isn't true. And that you cannot blame an entire nation for the sins of a portion of the population. That would be the same kind of reaction showed by some Arabs after the atrocities committed by US soldiers, as if all Americans were cruel bastards. That's not the case. That's my only point. Other than that, I agree that animal cruelty is despicable. That's not the question. And using critical judgment has got nothing to do with being new. And it's not because someone is new to Care2 that he's not aware of anything going on in the world. I wasn't born with my adhesion to Care2. I lived a little before...

Interesting with all the racism expressed by some (but not all) of those who actually believe this story which is a classic example of an urban legend.

Sandy, wouldn't it be in 1978 rather than 1958 ?

It's probably the same movie from which is taken the excerpt of the youtube video Angela pointed to. It's called Faces of Death, a mondo kind of movie. It's not real. It was shot in 1978 by Conan Le Cilaire. The scene here accused begins at 21:14 after the opening scene.

Oh, ok, so there's no proof because of the Chinese government. That's why you refer an article dating frome 1998 translated in 2001 and debunked on the same website the same year and present it to us as if it was news ? As it was mentioned in the links I provided, this story goes back as far as the 1940's it resurfaces once in while, like all good legends. I doubt the Chinese government masked the truth about it during the last 50 years. And if it was the government fault, how do you explained the fact that you can still gain access to other news showing what we (and I include myself at some point) consider real animal cruelty ? That's my final comment : what I mean is just focus on the real animal cruelty happening there. That's all. And stop (not talking specifically about you, but some other commentators) the racist remarks. This said, I hope every animal out there can enjoy a fulfilling life. Stop seeing the world in a Manichean way. I'm not against you. Just trying to clarify some assertions. Have a good day!

I was just going to point out Faces of Death too... How can you say it's not real??? I seen it many years ago. There was NO photoshop, excellent trick photography, etc back then! The little monkey twirls around in the table screaming bloody murder while these "people" bash it's little head in till it's dead then they eat the brains! Considering the HUNDREDS of videos of chinese people beating and ripping the skin off of LIVE cats, dogs and other animals why not believe this??? Face reality, not all, but many people condone this behavior, and NO, they do not deserve to be forgiven. Humans have the intelligence to know about the nervous system, the way it works and the horrible pain and terror these innocent animals suffer when they are brutally killed. They are not eating these animals out of hunger. Animals are not the ONLY thing to eat in China, even the poor areas of China. I'm completely vegan, no one NEEDS to eat animals in this day and age!

And if you've seen the said movie, you've noticed that there are no Chinese people involved...

Like I said, I do not condone these practices. But it's not because we've been shown real videos of cats and dogs being ripped that it automatically means that this one is true either.

Yeah, some are, the ones that are, are obvious, I do not believe this one is a fake. Think of the word "MOST".

Francois B. (0)
Sunday August 24, 2008, 3:16 pm
I know what "most" means, thanks for the linguistic lesson. I never thought about it before...

The real scenes are taken from the news and historical footage. Other real ones are filmed at slaughterhouses. And for the "obvious", if that's the argument, the head of the monkey after he's been strapped and twirls seem very fake to me... Anyway, the whole montage of the scene should speak by itself.

Sunday August 24, 2008, 3:28 pm
If you're interested in this, rent Faces of Death : Fact or fiction ? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0223251/) released in 1999 by the same director and in which he says that "it was a rubber head with jello, red dye and cauliflower. There was a staff of animal control people to protect the real monkey so when it came time for feeding the depravity and repulsion would have us believe it's a real "treat" " and that "that it was offensive to whatever culture it is that actually eats monkey brains because they believe it gets them closer to God so it became a legal issue. Hence, a reenactment."

Anyway, whenever there's a "real" scene involving 5 steadycams and in which you never see the other cameras shooting while you have many different angles simultaneously, you can have your own doubts.

They say pictures don't lie, I seen this monkey on the table and I see it tied down and I do see its head open. Dang!!! don't tell me about these people for I know too well, as far as I'm concerened I wish we would cut all tie's with them on the embargo and never deal with them again. I don't support them in any way and I won't. And seeing this makes me even more determinded to do so. I'm angry, sad, that even they would do something this cruel Heaven forbid them, I wish all the innocent could get out and the animals and a typhone would whipe them out would I we sorry? No because all the crulty would be gone, Then maybe they will learna lesson. Thanks Bremda.

Lisa F. (48)
Sunday August 24, 2008, 3:45 pm
Like I said it was many years ago when I watched the movie, real or fake, my point is that all the "skinned alive" vids of cats and dogs are real so why would eating monkey brains be so absurd or taboo to these cultures. The show "Bizarre Foods", and their host, Andrew Zimmermn, (Travel Channel), goes all over the world killing animals on camera and the host eats them on camera, some still alive!

True or not, the Chinese are the most uncivilized savages when it comes to God's Creatures! Viet Nam and other asian countries are bad too! But dont
forget the USA! We have aireal gunning of wolves, canned hunts where the "brave" hunter stands behind a secured fence with their assault weapons
and kill endangered creatures that cannot run or hide! How uncivilized is that?? We slaughter American Bisen, and now , the retard in the White House
wants to slip through the back door again and destroy the Endangered Species
Act by-passing congress again!!! What in hell can we do about this??

Lisa F. (48)
Sunday August 24, 2008, 5:05 pm
Your absolutely right, I'm definitely not saying all animal abuse is in China, people are needlessly torturing and killing animals everywhere on this planet! All in the name of GREED. I have been signing petitions and emailing congressmen trying to stop the destruction of our Endangered Species Act, and others, and even donated money to the Wildlife Defenders to stop the aireal wolf hunt, yet sometimes I still feel hopeless...all we can do is keep on fighting any way we know how!

I researched this after seeing Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Sickening and china isn't the only country that does this, there are several. This is graphic (I've never watched it) but I'm warning those who can't handle this type of thing, don't start now.

http://www.cosmocentral.com/post/Eating-Monkey-Brain.aspx

I do hope this is the fate of those so cruel & insensative to the suffering of others.

Risks
Consuming the brain and other nerve tissue of animals is not without risks. Besides the high fat content of brains,[5] brain consumption can also result in contracting fatal transmissible spongiform encephalopathies such as Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other prion diseases in humans and mad cow disease in cattle.

Now go read the story of the 8 year old mama dog who saved a human baby and tell me who the higher evolved animal is.

My thanks to Brenda and Daphne for trying to educate people on the suffering of these poor souls.

Just to clarify, I do wish it was just a myth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_brain

Monkey brain is a controversial food, often attributed to the Chinese, but also found in certain other countries. The practice of eating monkey brains has led to over-hunting, especially due to the unfounded belief that eating the monkeys' brain can cure impotence.[1]

Live monkey brain was one of the items in the Manchu Han Imperial Feast as part of Imperial cuisine in Beijing during the Qing Dynasty. Paul Burrell, the former butler of Princess Diana, claims he was served monkey brains on banana leaves and coconut palms in one of their visits.[2]

The Anyang tribe of Cameroon practiced a tradition in which a new tribal chief would consume the brain of a hunted gorilla while another senior member of the tribe would eat the heart.[3]

It is not only humans who eat the brains of monkeys. Two species of chimpanzee are known to eat the brains of monkeys which provide fat in their diet.[4]

Although most likely a rare practice[7][8], certain supposed methods by which monkey brains are eaten have sparked controversy. Certain restaurants provide special tables with a hole in the center. The live monkey is immobilized with its body below the table, and the top of its skull is removed with a knife. The head, which protrudes above the table top, serves as a bowl. Liquor may be poured into the skull and mixed with the brain. The diners then proceed to scoop out and eat parts of the brain.

This method of serving monkey brains was staged in the 1978 mondo film Faces of Death, in which a scene shows a group of people eating the dish in this manner. Several books also include similar descriptions. In the book Born Red, A Chronicle of the Cultural Revolution author Gao Yuan describes looking inside restaurant windows of Guangzhou that "offered the famous monkey brains, served at a special table that locked the monkey's head in place; the waiter would open the skull and the diners would eat while the body wriggled under the table." Maxine Hong Kingston's book The Woman Warrior also contains a description of a monkey feast including the special table; Kingston attributes the description to her mother. The Attic: Memoir of a Chinese Landlord's Son is a 1998 memoir of life in Communist China by Guanlong Cao, in which the author describes the eating of live monkey brains.

Historical versions by officials from Beijing (in the north) report that it is southerners who do it. Variations might get as close as another ethnic group in the same area or even that Grandfather did it once in the old days, but you rarely hear a reliable first hand account

(In short, it means they don't like to admit it.)

Damn these communist Chinese they will eat anything that moves. Utterly cruel and brainless bunch of lunatics. I wish the merciful God would strike these Communist hard again and again and again. That's why we see so many calamities happening in Communist China. Total blame should fall on the idiotic Communist goverment, they have done nothing to condone such evils maybe they are in the same category but eating it privately away from the public eyes. Oh! Mighty God please destroy the Communist once and for all.

I forced myself the other day to watch a docu about eating habits of the "richer" chinese people. A family with a few little kids visiting a restaurant...at first they go and choose their "food". All kinds of animals, hundres sitting in cages on top of each other!!! Each family member gets to pick out, what they want - it is so sickening. And they only eat certain parts , the rest goes to the garbage..and the father proudly commentet:"the rest of the wordl thinks we eat rice - but that's only for the poor, WE can afford to eat all these "goodies"...And that's what they teach their children as well..It's not only the eating of all this that disturbs me, it's the attitude...the way those poor animals are being kept before they "can" die and this arrogance . Sorry, but I feel, everybody you disrespects animal like that, should have to live like those animals for a while...maybe that would change their mind...but first of all, the children should be educated differently...it still turns my stomach when I think of these pics.....

China needs educated. If we could educate the children to love and feel empathy for all living things, we'd see a change. There are some AR groups now in china. Please pray for these people, because I'm sure they're probably in danger from the government. Please visit my friend Anouk's page:

I ahve had information from other sources of animals being eaten alive such as flesh being sliced off a donkey when alive so the diners can hear he agonising cries as part of the dining experience.

Whether this is an urban myth or not is irrelevant - so many horrific and diabolical things are done in China - well documented - for people to be disgusted and enraged.

No it is not all chinese people and yes, many other countrie do horrific things.

What is shocking about China is the total lack of any legislative protection at all and the absolute scale of the cruelty.

I'm not really sure what to believe. The link above claims this to be an urban legend but I'm quite sure it exists or at least it used to. I learned of this when I was quite young and that was some odd 30 years ago, and also after browsing the net, I've come across too many accounts of the procedure to conclude it must be true to some extent. Whether or not, just the remote possibility of it being true, turns my stomach over. What agony for the poor monkeys!! China and it's people better start cleaning out their closets because we are going to continue to put you and your ways in the spotlight for all to see!! Noted with sadness.

Discusting, vile, emotionless people. I will NEVER buy anything Chinese, I DID NOT WATCH THEIR RUBBISH OLYMPICS, and I will never visit their country, even if I was paid a lot of money. Barbarians. They dont deserve to have animals in China, they have NO idea of the love and companionship that an animal brings to ones life. THE HIGHER POWER IS WATCHING THEM, THEY WILL PAY.

Western countries are cruel too. Think of the way pigs, chickens, ducks, live transport, down feathers are "harvest" or what about the calfs. Does that make us all cruel? Yes it does, if you buy it, you are condoning to the cruelty! That is why ALL Chinese are guilty too!! They don't speak up and they are buying and teaching it to their children. Or do you really think that McDonald, or KFC is cruelty free? No, and we are buying it! So we are guilty too. We are talking degrees here.
But I agree the Chinese out do us all, the variety of cruelty is unbelievable. I know it is true, when you think that the restaurant in China can keep a bear in a cage till a customer wants some bear soup. He then gets his hand cut off, without any medication! Maybe in a week the second leg, etc etc

PLEASE GOD, GIVE ME A WAND TO INSTILL SOME FEELINGS INTO HUMANS FOR ANIMALS AND GIVE THOSE POOR CREATURES A MERCYFULL QUICK DEATH, Amen

(I bet, you did not think, that you would ever see me praying, did you?)

I remember an article I was reading about how "The planet earth has cancer" and the cancer is called "humans". Once our species is eliminated then the cancer will be gone and the plants and animals can once again thrive. Oh such sad drama that us humans create, why can't we live in harmony and enjoy life to its fullest with no cruelty??????????????

Every Animal on this Planet has Lessons for every single Human
It sickens me to think one could set down and encounter a meal with Monkey Brains being attempted to eat. What is wrond with the HUMAN RACE.

The point that everyone seems to have missed is that these Chinese think they are highly civilized and quite frankly consider what they eat and how they eat it the normal practise. Being such a vast and closed country they haven't really progressed to a highr way of life. What used to be donea thousand years ago, is still in practise today. They just don't know better. Besides with all the poverty, lets not be fooled by the splendour of the Olympics, anything that swims, crawls, flies, runs or walks is meant for the pot!

OMG Bea what you said almost made me cry. I guess that one just adds to the bunch...they all do. The more I know about those "people" , the more I wonder do they actually have a soul? or are they the proof that some people can go without? I'm deeply sickened, in any way a living creature can be. Disgraceful bunch of beasts, and forgive me if I'm generalizing and picking also the good ones in the bunch...but I have seen FAR too many videos and pics of animals being skinned alive, tortured, chopped in bits and so on.

Bush Meat is a serious issue. Some of it is myth, but most isn't. It's not just China people. Anthropology.net did an excellent piece about awareness for Bush Meat.

Interesting comments. China has been doing this for years. Just as Americans have been eating all parts of the cow, pig and many other animals. In India, the cow is considered sacred. However, they don't tell us we should not eat beef.

While it turns my stomach to think of eating a monkey, it also turns my stomach to think of eating beef, pig and other animals. I became a vegetarian as a young girl because I could not bear to eat the chickens I played with. Crazy. I know. But today, I love animals so much, I cannot bear to eat them. Although I refrain from eating animals, I would never push my practice on others because I know they have their reasons and right for doing so.

For some reason, we in America think our way is the best way. If we look at some our our practices, I'm sure other cultures might cringe at some of the crazy things we do too.

Just looking at this from another perspective...

There are some things I see absolutely no reason for us to know. I'm not even sure it's any of our business. Why would I want to know this?

I am really torn. I advocate the rights of others to live as they want as long as they do no harm. But define harm. Americans slaughter hundreds of thousands of animals for meat every year and I doubt all of them are humanely done. The picture sickens me just as any needless slaughter would. But how would we feel if people of other countries began yelling at us to change what we eat b/c they thought it was horrible. What if they worshipped chickens lets say - and were horrified to see what we do to them. Just throwing out some thoughts.
