Also this week, Congressman Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) joined animal advocates at Shadowbrook Farm in Mettawa, Ill., calling for a national ban on the use of deadly double-decker trailers for the transportation of horses. These stacked trucks are designed for livestock species such as cattle and pigs—not horses who have longer necks and are forced to stoop in the cramped quarters, often causing severe injuries. Kirk has introduced H.R. 6278, the Horse Transportation Safety Act, to prohibit the interstate transportation of horses in a motor vehicle containing two or more levels stacked on top of one another.The legislation came on the heels of a grisly accident last fall in Wadsworth, Ill., in which a double-decker cattle truck carrying 59 Belgian draft horses overturned when the driver ran a red light and hit another vehicle. Residents could hear the animals kicking and screaming, panicked by their inability to escape. Nineteen of the horses either died on the scene or had to be euthanized later.We have a video interview with a volunteer who was on the scene of the deadly crash and who spoke out against cruel transport. I don't get this double decker hauling anyway, no large animals should be transported this way, it's dangerous, and also very damaging to the animal, imagine the swaying, how frightened they must be!

This is horrific! There have been so many double decker accidents! Awful!
If you haven't already called your Congress people please do.
The new Bill that took over H.R. 503 is now H.R. 6598, we have 117 co-sponsors!
We are out of committee and in to the house and hopefully we will sail through!
This means it will be against the law to take our horses out of the country for slaughter!
Please call your reps, the horses are counting on us!

TY Linda for the forward. Brenda, as always your articles are always caring. Noted. Very sad story about those horses having to die in that manner.

I will call my Reps, that's for sure, this is absolutely wrong, and a disgusting way to treat such a magnificent animal such as our horses.

I signed, and hopefully with all of us together as one voice, we can this type of transporting banned for good!

Geesh! This is getting to be far beyond ridiculous not to mention extremely frustrating. I thought Care2 said they had this fixed!
