The Iams dogs in this scene have just had large chunks of muscle cut from their thighs and have been placed on the laboratory floor to recover from the effects of the anesthetics. Some of the dogs are unconscious, while others are awake and trying to righ

What Our Investigator Found: Iams’ Den of Horrors
Iams dogs dumped on cold concrete flooring after having huge chunks of muscle cut out of their thighs

dogs and cats gone stir-crazy from confinement; dogs and cats in windowless, dungeon-like buildings

a coworker who instructed her to hit the dogs on the chest if they quit breathing; another coworker who talked about an Iams dog found dead in his cage, bleeding from his mouth

a dog who limped in pain from Lyme disease

cruel studies done by Iams involving sticking tubes down dogs’ throats to force them to ingest vegetable oil

Iams dogs with such severe tartar buildup on their teeth that it was painful for them to eat

vet technicians with inadequate training and experience performing invasive procedures

coworkers who talked about a live kitten who was washed down a drain

coworkers who talked about how they had to go home because the ammonia fumes in the animal trailers were so overpowering that it made their eyes burn (try being one of the animals in those cages!)

cats kept in a cinderblock room with crude wooden “resting” boards that had nails sticking out of them; one of the boards fell on a cat, crushing her to death, while our investigator was there yet the lab director did not remove the boards when the cat was crushed—he removed them when he was told that the lab was going to be inspected because he knew they were illegal

Noted and thanks for the article Brenda.
This is despicable cruelty to the animals.
I'm wondering if there is current info, as I can only see reports to November 2005 and this court decision below of December 2006. I'll do more research and contact PETA.

University’s Attempt to Conceal Tests Done for Iams Struck Down

For Immediate Release:
December 7, 2006

Contact:
Lori Kettler, Esq. 757-622-7382

Starkville, Miss. — In a victory for the public’s right to know what happens to animals behind closed laboratory doors, the Chancery Court of Oktibbeha County has ordered Mississippi State University (MSU) to turn over documents related to dental experiments and possibly other experiments on dogs that MSU has conducted for dog- and cat-food maker Iams—a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble—since 1999.

PETA filed suit against MSU last January after the university wanted to charge more than $40,000 for public documents pertaining to the experiments, even though the Mississippi Public Records Act states that such records should be furnished to the public either free of charge or in return for reasonable fees. Following an amended request for fewer records, MSU told PETA that only 19 of the pages requested would be sent, at a cost of $1,000.86—more than $52 per page—and that the remaining 534 pages would not be turned over because they contained proprietary information and "trade secrets." Eventually, MSU and Iams—which intervened in the lawsuit—refused to release any of the documents.

In her decision, Judge Dorothy W. Colom cited a similar case involving the University of North Carolina, in which the presiding judge concluded that the type and number of animals used in an experiment, whether surgery will be performed, and information related to animals’ pain and discomfort do not qualify as trade secrets. Wrote Judge Colom, "Having carefully reviewed each and every protocol submitted by MSU and Iams, this Court hereby finds that the protocols themselves are not a trade secret." Judge Colom also declared that the documents were not exempt from release under the Public Records Act.

PETA’s 2002-2003 undercover investigation of an Iams contract laboratory showed that at least 27 dogs were killed there, while others died of illnesses that went untreated. PETA’s investigator also found dogs and cats who were confined to small, barren cages—some for up to six years—and dogs who were silenced by having their vocal cords cut out.

"This is a victory for all the animals who suffer every day in painful, unnecessary experiments and whose stories must be told," says PETA Senior Vice President Mary Beth Sweetland. "Now, we’ll have a chance to find out exactly what MSU and Iams seemed so eager to hide."

Copies of the decision are available upon request. For more information, please visit PETA’s Web site IamsCruelty.com.

I support the above views, re Care2 having Iams as a sponsor..yes we have to be realistic, yes even getting rthical things done, in a capitalist system can mean compromises, and uneasy alliances, based on the end justifying the means. However the use of the sponsors Walmart and Iams, is beyond the pale..there is a line, and it has sadly been crossed.
We dont have to sell our soul,to get sponsorship..

IAMS can't be seen indepednly from P&G (IAMS is Procter and Gamvle brand)
info from IAMS site:

We do not fund studies that require the loss of life of cats or dogs. We only conduct dog and cat studies that are the veterinary equivalent of nutritional or medical studies acceptable on people, including: urine, feces, blood and immune cell analysis, allergy tests, and skin and muscle biopsies.

Effective November 1, 2006, we conduct studies in just three kinds of locations: pet owners' homes, our Pet Health & Nutrition Center and locations where dogs and cats are already living (e.g. assistance dog organizations, kennels, etc). We test our foods with healthy pet cats or dogs in their homes or with pets who already have specific diseases or conditions.

We conduct studies with species other than dogs and cats when no validated alternative is available. Our work is consistent with Procter & Gamble's policy and practices, following all applicable regulations and guidelines.

and as we know P&G still test on animals

one of the IAMS partners is Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR)which promote animal experiments as essential parts of any research and lead campaings against AR activists.
another IAMS partner's an American lobby group called the National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA), ''which includes vivisectors, fur farmers and hunting organisations, is a public supporter of IAMS. Its underlying philosophy is that animals exist to be exploited for human gain. A statement from the NAIA appears on the IAMS website in defence of IAMS' research practices.'' (uncaged)

Here is a letter written by Marti Hissong, Iams Consumer Care NA:

Dear Dog Enthusiast:

You recently contacted us regarding our affiliation with the HSUS. We’d like to thank you for taking the time to express your concern as well as update you on a recent decision made by our organization.

The Iams Company will NOT BE FUNDING the Petfest America events with HSUS again next year. We appreciate all of the direct feedback we have received from the dog community and apologize for the frustration that this sponsorship has caused. We have a lot of exciting innovations planned next year, which will require our focused time and resources.

As a leader in the pet industry, The Iams Company is about educating all pet owners on pet health care and nutrition - from the family pet to the active competitor. We are definitely pro-dog and clearly not anti-hunting. We look forward to continuing our long history of support of the sporting dog community and leadership in the industry with innovative research to improve the health and well-being of athletic dogs.

We hope that we can put this behind us and focus on the future — great performing foods for great performing dogs

Past and future sporting dog sponsorships and support include:

* AKC Master National Hunt Test
* The Iams Company is the only dog food company to support Armbruster Test, an international hunt test for Deutsche Drahthaars.
* For over 20 years, The Iams Company has been the acknowledged leader in nutritional research for performance dogs. We developed the only "in the field" research study of pointing dogs and hunting performance.
* We support Quail Unlimited, Pheasants forever, The Ruffed Grouse Society and Ducks Unlimited.
* We publish Care and Nutrition of the sporting Dog, one of the only manuals for hunters and field trialers.

"An animal rights organization is making misleading allegations about feeding studies performed for The Iams Company at an external facility that we left in early 2003. These allegations not only are old, but also are highly sensationalized and laced with untruths."

These reports are very old..but it keeps on going around..and as far as PETA..I wouldn't trust them..or believe a word out of their mouths..

I am also boycotting IAMS, Eukanuba and everything "made by Proctor and Gamble". I don't trust any company when they admit that they are using animals for their studies, because it is a fact, when it is about MONEY, all compassion, caring and respect will disappear. IAMS is now saying, that all the abuse belong to the past... They now are using testimonials from several animal organizations that they are free from animal abuse and torturing... But is this true?? Randy from care2 asked us, activists for proof of IAMS guilt... This is unfair, because WE never abused and tortured animals for food, money... IAMS already admitted that they were guilty, so THEY have to proof that they are clean now, not us! But again: I don't trust any company when they use animals!!

There is info from Uncaged UK:
So there are infos from Uncaged UK:

Uncaged first exposed IAMS/Eukanuba's painful, invasive and lethal tests on cats, dogs and other animals to the world in 2001 after extensive research through dozens of scientific journals.

IAMS/Eukanuba's experiments on hundreds of animals caused kidney failure, obesity, malnutrition, liver damage, severe allergic reactions, stomach inflammation, diarrhoea, severe skin disorders, lesions, skin wounds and other painful illnesses.

Our exposé became a front page story in the Daily Express, and the embarrassment forced IAMS/Eukanuba and their parent company, Procter & Gamble (P&G), to claim that they would stop lethal tests on cats and dogs in their new 'research policy.'

However, in 2003 IAMS/Eukanuba were exposed again - dogs kept in shocking condition had been force-fed vegetable oil, had chunks of muscle removed from their thighs, and been 'de-barked' by having their voice-boxes cut out in a painful and bloody procedure. The damning evidence confirmed IAMS' 'research policy' to be nothing more than a sham.

Several major UK animal organisations - e.g. the RSPCA, the Dogs Trust, Blue Cross - severed ties with IAMS/Eukanuba and P&G as a result of the exposés and our campaigns. As have hundreds of rescue centres, shelters, kennels, catteries, 'pet' shops, training centres, cat and dog clubs and breeders.

Our campaigns appear to have made IAMS/Eukanuba finally stop killing cats and dogs in 'pet' food research.

However, they continue to knowingly cause pain and distress to cats and dogs in long-term laboratory experiments. And documentary evidence from research establishments and IAMS/Eukanuba's own admissions reveal that they continue to kill other animals in cruel nutrition tests.

Furthermore, since 1999 IAMS/Eukanuba have been part of the Procter & Gamble corporation, which continues to routinely poison and kill animals in tests to develop cosmetic and household products.

After a programme on the Dutch television in December 2003, showing the abuse of 19 dogs "in the name of IAMS", many people were writing furious mails to IAMS. IAMS wrote back in December 2003, I have the letter, and IAMS "was shocked and immediately removed these dogs and rehome them"... But when you ask them: were are these rescued dogs? could we see them? The only answer you will get is SILENCE. A company who does not know HOW their animals are treatened in the labs...who is acting "surprised and shocked"...can't be trusted at all!!

These testing intitutes are so false and very good when they tell their lies. What also worries me , is all the other things that are happening in silence and which have not yet being exposed. Cruelty is taking the main lead on this planet.

well personally, I'd like to see some video that is more current about the abuse and cruelty. This video has been around for many years. What they have done is inexcuseable and horribly cruel to these poor animals, but perhaps it's time to reinvestigate to see what's the truth and what isn't. I know I've written letters to them and get the same response, that they allegedly don't practice this any more. I personally don't believe them, but I'd like to see some current proof that they have continued to perform all these cruel, inhumane tests.

It is time to stop IAMS from advertising here! How can we get the message to IAMS? Randy does not see enough evidence that they are still doing wrong!?He seems to believe IAMS Bill and the other Feedback and suggestions kings and queens more than he does believe what you are posting here! Otherwise he would stop accepting the blood money!

I would suggest a add free Care2+ for real activists to solve this problem that way the real activists dont have to see all the ads from companies that rank high in the corporate hall of shame! No more Toyota Ford GM and all the other great companies doing everything they can to kill this planet!
No advertising at all for people who pay for Care2! But care2 can sell the advertising for people who dont care at all... 9.771.285 members! You care i know!

I could even imagine that i pay for all of you! I just need one compassionate company as a sponsor for Care2+! Randy now how would that be! The true activists get a ad free Care2+ but you can still sell your greenwashing advertising!

I received a great message today, that Care2 is also just a one to one reflection of the society and not what we want this world to be! We are all just dreamers!

How would you like to have your own CLEAN care2+? Without any commercial messages!
But from one sponsor who would be the overall sponsor for Care2+ that company would be the ECO Brand of the year!

Joanne M..
You're not the only one who asks this..many do..though some still cling to these old fabricated reports..and claim them to be the truth..and worse that they make it appear as if its all currently still going on..and some people just take their word rather than check on it..

You won't find any recent updated videos or news on this..because they are not doing this..

Everything on the website in this news story is very outdated..and much of it is untrue..
Take the pet food recall..There were hundreds of petitions going around asking people to sign in protest that IAMS was poisoning our pets..Not true at all..

http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/menu.asp

Unfortunately..this story is not only out-dated..but there is highly inaccurate and misleading information..as is all the sites circulating on the Internet regarding IAMS feeding studies..

Since IAMS/P&G..found out that those places that they had previously contracted to for the studies/care of animals..were causing and doing harm..to the animals..instead of contracting other companies to conduct feeding studies..they immediately choose to conduct such studies in the homes of their employee families..Today..over 600 employee families participate in the in-home testing program..

Even though the vast majority of their studies are conducted in an in-home
setting..there are some studies that require in-depth data gathering in a
more controlled environment..They do this type of feeding study in their
company-owned Pet Health and Nutrition Center..These studies follow their
industry leading research protocol and are the veterinary equivalent of
nutritional or medical studies acceptable on people..The studies are
monitored by their own staff of veterinarians..behaviorists and independent
experts..

And their Pet Health and Nutrition Center is a state-of-the-art facility..Their dogs
and cats live in a cage less environment..receiving proper socialization in
an enriched setting..

Because dogs are pack animals..Their dogs are housed with a companion..Each
kennel has a doggie-door that takes them to an outside run..giving them lots
of room for running and playing..Each dog is provided with his or her own
toys (rotated on a regular basis) and their very own comfortable bed to
sleep on..There is also a dog park adjacent to the kennels where the dogs play and interact each day in play groups..

Their cats are housed in compatible social groups..Each room is furnished with
beds..toys (to stimulate play) and several perches..which allow the cats to
observe things from a higher viewpoint..Each cat room also has a very large
window with a platform where our cats can lay in the sun or watch the birds
feeding at the outside bird feeders..

All of the dogs and cats reach a point in their life when it's time to leave
the Pet Health and Nutrition Center..That is when they are either adopted
into a home or placed into our retirement facility..Either way..they will
live out their lives in comfort with good food..good companionship..and good
veterinary care..

I personally will not..nor have I ever fed any of my dogs/cats..any commercial pet food..though there are a few good ones out there.. but very costly..I have always home prepared my pets food..naturally and healthy..with the help and advice from a good Vet..and they were fine in that..So I don't push for any pet food company..but just sad to see that when a company takes responsibility when something is wrong (which very few actually do) and they are still wrongly accused and blasted..

I just don't understand why some accept anything they hear or read as being the truth..and do so..without really checking it out..

I wrote to care 2 & posted a blog a while back when Tide was advertised on here & did the same now that Iams is featured as an advertisor. I get the same letter back from care2 ~a form letter. P&G is a huge company w/ lotsa money ~ and guess that supposedly outweighs everything else. I've boycotted P&G products for years now & will tell anyone who will listen just what a horrible company they truly are.

This is a reply that I received from IAMS after emailing them.
Thank you for contacting us.

Unfortunately, there is highly inaccurate and misleading information
circulating on the Internet regarding our feeding studies, and I'm glad
you've given me the opportunity to provide you with the facts. We too are
passionate about cats and dogs, with a deep commitment to their health and
welfare.

We are accountable for making sure that our products are wholesome, and that
consumers can feed them with confidence. Instead of contracting other
companies to conduct our feeding studies, we choose to conduct such studies
in the homes of our employee families. Today, over 600 employee families
participate in our in-home testing program.

Even though the vast majority of our studies are conducted in an in-home
setting, there are some studies that require in-depth data gathering in a
more controlled environment. We do this type of feeding study in our
company-owned Pet Health and Nutrition Center. These studies follow our
industry leading research protocol and are the veterinary equivalent of
nutritional or medical studies acceptable on people. The studies are
monitored by our own staff of veterinarians, behaviorists and independent
experts.

Our Pet Health and Nutrition Center is a state-of-the-art facility. Our dogs
and cats live in a cageless environment, receiving proper socialization in
an enriched setting.

Because dogs are pack animals, our dogs are housed with a companion. Each
kennel has a doggie-door that takes them to an outside run, giving them lots
of room for running and playing. Each dog is provided with his or her own
toys (rotated on a regular basis) and their very own comfortable bed to
sleep on. There is also a dog park adjacent to the kennels where the dogs
play and interact each day in play groups.

Our cats are housed in compatible social groups. Each room is furnished with
beds, toys (to stimulate play) and several perches, which allow our cats to
observe things from a higher viewpoint. Each cat room also has a very large
window with a platform where our cats can lay in the sun or watch the birds
feeding at the outside bird feeders.

All of our dogs and cats reach a point in their life when it's time to leave
the Pet Health and Nutrition Center. That is when they are either adopted
into a home or placed into our retirement facility. Either way, they will
live out their lives in comfort with good food, good companionship, and good
veterinary care.

In 2007 we had several members of the news media tour our facility. Their

PETA is not any better, they euthanize healthy dog & cats. You can go to www.PETA kills animals & read up on what they do to the innocent dogs & cats, they had employees that were caught dumping large plastic bags behind a Piggly Wiggly with the bodies of cats & dogs. PETA makes about 30 million a year & could afford NO KILL SHELTERS, I did belong to PETA but dropped my membership after finding out what they do.

Patricia..Exactly..and that has been the case..they have and still are quite often visited by the media..as well as independent outside resource check in..If there was anything going on..there would be current reports..There isn't any..because they have turned everything around for the better of all..Are they perfect..No..no company is..for that matter no one is..But at least they made good positive changes..As many companies seem to be doing..
Anyone..at anytime can request a tour of their Pet Center/facility..Maybe that would help the blindness that seems to be so constant with some..And then maybe not..but..it would be a breath of fresh air if some people would stop repeating the same old news..same old reports and that which are lies..

Peta is such a farce..I cannot believe the same people who put down so many things against animals..will still stand behind Peta..I don't understand it..
