It's so hard to believe anyone could do it, but many helpless dogs spend their entire lives in "solitary confinement," trapped at the end of a chain or in a small pen. For a social pack animal, there's no crueler punishment.

In my country (the Netherlands) chained dogs are illegal. I have never ever seen one. This is very cruel, this is abuse!! What kind of people want a chained dog?? It should be a dearly loved family member.
Noted and signed. Thank you Brenda.

It does not matter if a dog is your best friend or not. It is a fact that righteous man does not chain their dogs for 24 houres a day! Chaining animals this way is animal cruelty, animal abuse and animal suffering! And this has to be stopped now and for ever!!

Keeping dogs chained is abuse, clear and simple. It causes behavioral problems for many dogs that can result in attacks. I have over 30 years experience as a dog trainer using positive reinforcement training. It is generally a LACK of proper and positive house training that causes people to decide to chain their dogs outside. If you want to have a dog, understand that it is NOT a RIGHT, but a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Your dog needs positive training in order to be a pleasure, just as your child would. Neither one comes knowing all of the wonderful things that you would hope they would learn. You have to teach them to behave the way you would like them to. If you are unwilling to train your dog, or seek help training your dog, DON'T BOTHER GETTING A DOG! Mentally and emotionally a dog wants nothing but to be WITH YOU and the family, to be fed, watered and play WITH YOU AND THE FAMILY. They are SOCIAL creatures who thrive on affection. There is nothing but sorrow attached to the end of a chain.

Noted and signed. I wonder how people would like to be chained? People can be so stupid, not realizing the damage the chain can do to an animals neck.

I'm with all of you. It should be outlawed. Many of the cases on animal planet and other animal rescue shows almost always witness a chained
abused neglected dog.

And I did so happily!
Keeping a dog chained, anywhere, for any reason,
should be at least a misdemeanor which is strictly
enforced!
Thanks, Brenda!

Noted and signed! So glad to see this barbaric act come up for petition (not to mention seeing the amount of petitions received thus far.

With the many dogs I have possessed, I have NEVER even been tempted to such an inhumane act! Chaining dogs has been practiced by so many individuals, for so very many years. It's so common people think of it as second nature to chain dogs up, not stopping to think of such cruelty it poses to their pet/s.

I know of so many who consider that they are doing such for the "safety" of their dog. Here is an example of how ludicrous that concept can be:

Several years ago I went to visit an acquaintance, of whom I was interested in purchasing a vehicle he was selling. I drove into his drive-way, and there I see a German Shepherd hanging over a fence, suspended by a chain. This dog was very still as it hung there, but I quickly went up to the poor dog and unhooked it's collar, laying the dog by the fence. The weather was rather cool, yet I noticed the dog was still warm and limp.

Upon putting my ear to the dog's side, I heard a faint heart-beat, so I went about trying to resuscitate the dog by massaging the dog's throat, then applying repetitive pressure on the dog's sides. Finally my efforts were successful, and the "luckiest dog in the world" began to breathe and revived.

then went to the owner's door and knocked. After he came to the door, I immediately informed the owner of his dog, and the horrific situation I discovered the dog in.

He appeared highly distressed by the situation, rushing over to his dog and expressing his relief that the dog was "OK", after which, I informed the man that if I had not arrived on the scene, the out-come would, of course, had been drastically different.

This guy then proceeds to tell me that he was "afraid that might happen", to which I responded, asking him if he was "afraid" that could occur, then why in the Hell did he not take action to attempt to prevent such a thing.

I'm usually an easy-going individual, but when it comes to issues of animal cruelty or neglect, I have occasionally displayed a drastically different demeanor.

The man stated that he had paid over $400 for the dog, and that he would never desire to lose such a valuable animal. I then informed him that "it really didn't make a damn to me if the dog was $10,000, or if he got the dog for free "It was still his ass if I found he had not corrected such a possibility from occurring again.

To make the long story short, this man was afraid his dog might dig out from under the fence and go loose. I assisted him in placing concrete blocks around the inside of the fence, so the dog could freely exist in the yard without the guy being tempted to chain the dog up again, along with extending the height of his fence to prevent any likelihood of the dog jumping over.

So much for "safety" in that situation. I am just so thankful of my timing!

I would love for "chaining" to be made illegal, as it should have been long ago!

I thank you for those involved in getting this petition going...and dogs everywhere would surely agree! Sincerely and gratefully, Wolf C. Eldridge
