Nearly two million companion animals are stolen each year. Many of these animals are sold to research laboratories, dog-fighting rings or puppy mills, where they are abused and often killed.

Class “B” dealers obtain animals from state, county or city owned and operated animal pounds or shelter, (this is called pound seizure), other USDA licensed “B” dealers and various random sources. However, “B” dealers also obtain animals from “bunchers."

Bunchers fraudulently obtain animals through “free to good home” ads, preying on unsuspecting people who can no longer care for their companions. They make promises of a good home and tender care, only to turn around and sell the animals, sometimes the same day, to Class “B” dealers. In attempts to gather as many animals as possible for sale to research institutions, bunchers also frequently steal family pets directly from their owners.

I'm in despair. A shelter is there to help, to protect. these shelters should be shut down! I would rather have the animal euthanized than sent to a bloody vivisection lab! Is there no law against this in the USA?

Since 1969? And still going on to this day? How dare they sell our animals as "products" for vivisection! I am so against experiments on all animals!

Brenda, I can't believe my eyes with what your saying here, the animals are not protected by law? This is just terrible, I feel helpless...Is there anything at all that any of us can do? I know that I sign everything that comes my way for vivisection & exerimenting on animals, I have also written my Reps, Senators & Congresspeople about this.

Please let me know how I can help sweetie. TY for caring so very much about how these beautiful animals are being used & sold as "products", just insane, they all lie to get the money, makes me sick for our animals!

Last Chance for Animals shut down a huge Class B dealer here in Arkansas several years ago. Many of you are familiar with C.C. Baird (I hope) and to all of you there was legislation in Washington that would have literally shut these Class B dealers down known as the Pet Protection Act and it was removed before the farm bill passed by lobbyists for vivisectors. You can blame each and every one of your senators/congresspeople for failing to pass this to protect America's pets. I begged my senators to keep this in the farm bill but as usual in Washington, money talks!!!!!!! Our pets were sold down the river!!!!!!!!

The Pet Safety and Protection Act
AKA “Buck’s Bill”



The Pet Safety and Protection Act would stop abuses like this.

The Pet Safety and Protection Act (S. 714 & H.R. 1280) was introduced in the Senate by Senator Akaka (D-HI) and in the House by Representatives English (D-PA) and Doyle (D-PA). When passed, the Act will amend the Animal Welfare Act to ensure that all animals used in research are obtained legally by prohibiting USDA licensed Class “B” Dealers (like C.C. Baird) from supplying cats and dogs to research facilities.

Class “B” dealers are licensed to purchase and sell animals to research. They are only supposed to obtain animals for re-sale from other “B” dealers, pounds and shelters and from persons who have bred and raised the animals themselves.

However, “B” dealers routinely violate the law by acquiring animals from fraudulent sources and abusing and neglecting them. These animals are often stolen pets, strays or animals obtained under false pretenses and deception such as “free to good home” ads. It is virtually impossible to know the true history of an animal acquired by a Class “B” dealer. Each time a Class “B” dealer sells an animal to a research lab, a strong possibility exists that it is a lost or stolen family pet.

There are only 15 random source Class “B” dog and cat dealers left that sell animals to research facilities. Please help to get rid of these remaining Class “B” dealers and ensure that animals purchased by research facilities are obtained legally.


Buck’s Bill.


This bill is also known as “Buck’s Bill.” In 2003, “Buck" was one of the many animals rescued during a raid of the nation's most notorious Class "B" dealer, C.C. Baird. Extremely ill on the day of his rescue, Buck struggled with Stage 3 heartworm disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and parasitic pneumonia. His heart was paper-thin due to the heartworm. After his rescue, he was in such bad shape that he stayed at the vet clinic for seven months. When he was well enough, he went to a foster home where he lived until he died a few months later from internal hemorrhaging. All who knew Buck fell in love with him. “Buck’s Bill” serves to honor Buck and all the dogs and cats that die due to inadequate care and abuse at the hands of Class “B” dealers.

IF WE CAN GET THIS LEGISLATION BACK BEFORE CONGRESS WE MUST GET BEHIND IT AND GET IT PASSED. THIS WILL SHUT DOWN CLASS B DEALERS AND THEY WILL NO LONGER EXIST.

First of all - why is it that for a site that Care2 - Care being the word that should count - I am seeing the same names and pictures that sign these petitions. I am going to post something on Raise the Woof. This is just stupid!!! - 226 signatures??? And as for this story - SHELTER has a whole different meaning than what these morons know - and yes - moron!!! HUMANE is a word they understand either. This is disgusting!!! Animal abuse at a new high!!!

I can't believe shelters that take in rescued animals are turning around and putting them in situations where they are caused more suffering. I'm hoping that Michigan and other states that allow this to happen will put a stop to it. Signed petition. Thank you, Brenda.

FREE SPITIT--THERE ARE A FEW STATES WHERE THIS IS AGAINST THE LAW--THERE HAVE TO BE NEW LAWS PUT IN PLACE IN "EVERY STATE" TO STOP THE ATROSITIES BEING DONE TO "SHELTER ANIMALS"! A SHELTER IS SUPPOSE TO PROTECT--NOT COLLECT DOGS FOR TORTURE! EVERY STATE GOVERMENT NEEDS TO GIVE THE SHELTERS MONEY TO HELP THEM SO THIS TYPE OF THING DOESN'T HAPPEN! OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE PAYING FOR THE TORTURE OF ANIMALS IN LABS--THEY NEED TO SPEND OUR TAX DOLLARS KEEPING THEM ALIVE AN FINDING THEM HOMES INSTEAD!

Thank you so much Brenda for explaining to me, I know when I wrote to my state Reps. here in Florida, I do believe that my Congresswoman said she supported the H.R. 1280 bill if I recall the email that she responded to. However I will now write or call my Governor Crist and see what can be done to help our animals with funds for our shelters and to see that our tax dollars are not being spent to tortore the innocent animals in these "outdated" labs!

They should have never started this selling of our animals to the labs, what the hell were they thinking? To get rid of them as a commodity or a product, instead of getting them loving homes? Oh, this angers me so much!

Once again Brenda, your soul is good & caring & thank you for your response, I will definately follow through with this and let you know what answer I get. Bless you sweetie, Rock on sis!

Calvin is safe, so is maggie, buck, sparky, homer, penny, radar, mason, goldie, tipi, murphey, joey, goldie, liz, max...but not the other four.

**SHOCKING TO LEAVE SMOE BEYOND BECAUSE OF A DOLLAR**

We have taken out 18 dogs in the last month gtom Montcalm, Michigan. the dogs go to scientific research there, where the guy who gets them can show up any time. we were told he would not be returning before Christmas, but the next day he came and took liz. by calling the county admin and the commissioner's, thankfully liz was returned, and we have now, she is doing great. the others are all going to approved rescue/foster groups...but there remains four more. thus far, the only way we've been able to save these dogs from being tested --yesterday, they were sleeping on someone's couch, tomorrow they could be chosen because their hearts are similar to humans, or they could have their eyes and ears or brain dissected -- just because they are at the shelter. please consider donating to help us get out the remaining dogs. each dog is 70 for the fee to get out, and then about 58 for vetting. while waiting for transport, we've boarded the dogs for 10 a day. i don't know if people are 'adjusted' now to the idea that shelter dogs go to scientific research, but if not, and you're alarmed that this is happening, please email me your phone number and call me if you care to donate to get a dog out, thank you.
