As a New Mexico resident, I send my heartfelt thanks to Tierney for posting this important petition, and to all the wonderful Care2 members who have signed it. Otero Mesa is indeed an environmental treasure that urgently needs protection.

I am sorry that I cannot sign this petition in that, even though it has many positives as a motive for such a plea. I am anti-hunting and will not support any conservation/wildlife effort associated in any way with groups that promote efforts to preserve a healthy habitat for wildlife to thrive only to have these animals shot and killed by those - many who are members of the very sportsmans clubs that support those groups - who find blowing away innocent wildlife as good fun and a manly past-time. There are many large organizations such as the Wildlife Federation and other conservation societies who present themselves in a positive light to help wildlife thrive via glossy catalogs, calendars, mailings, online adverts as I have even seen here on Care2. newsletters and so on and manage to keep the sportsman/hunting club factor almost invisible to the unsuspecting and well-intentioned animal lover as myself who works so that life is preserved and not taken away. The only wildlife land trust that PROHIBITS hunting and poaching currently is the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust which I support and you can link through the HSUS site at hsus.org. If you are anti-hunting, then check out what the Wildlife Federation is all about on their site as a glimpse of this issue. This is but one example. As we see in this petition, the Wilderness Society is not against associating itself with hunting groups.If you are not opposed to killing innocent animals for sport then of course this would not be of interest. In the past I supported groups as this thinking I was doing something great to promote habitat and growth of wildlife. When I learned the truth I was very upset. I am pro-environmental conservation and thoroughly understand the thrust of this petition. Nevertheless, I feel I must remain loyal to the strong feelings I have concerning environmental/wildlife organizations sponsored by those who hunt.
