One of the best ways to stop the spread of the flu (like H1N1) is for sick people to stay home. But Wal-Mart gives employees "demerits" that can lead to termination if they call in sick.

You can leave a message for Walmart before you sign the petition!

Thanks for signing the petition!

With your help, we can get Wal-Mart to create a better paid sick days policy -- one that's good for public and employee health. Can you help us spread the word about this important campaign?

We have sold our souls to the devil for cheap prices.
The reason prices are so cheap is the goods are made in sweat shops overseas which we have lost much of our manufacturing base here in this Country. With the unemployment statistics climbing, with so many workers only able to find part time and low wage employment, some have dropped off the charts altogether living as homeless or living with friends and relatives.
Workers at WalMart are treated little better than serfs....I signed this petition but this whole Country needs to wake up and start demanding that the middle class be given opportunities for decent jobs. There has been a war against the middle class for years now and it doesn't mean anything to have cheap goods if no one is working.

Sorry Tierney..I am not at all in agreement with this..Like Bee Hive Lady..I also know many contented Wal-Mart workers..One in particular is my sister..She is a part-time worker at our local store..I just discussed this with her..and she said it is not entirely true..A lot is being left out..

Wal-Mart's policy on this is..

If a worker within a six month period has been out sick six times..they are called in for what they call a "coaching" That means that they will be talked to and given a warning about taking off too much sick time..If they continue..they are then given a D-day..Which is..a day off with pay..in which they have to write a letter to state why they want the job..and what they can offer as a worker if they so wish to stay..and keep their job..

Now that does not include anyone who was able to show that they really were sick..They do not give out demerits to those who can show they really were sick..
The policy is really geared towards those that abuse the sick time off..And the fact is that many workers do that..So I see nothing wrong with them wanting to have a better and more productive and reliable worker in their establishment..

There may be very well be some disgruntled employee's that don't like being called on their constant absences..My sister runs the deli and on any given week she is stuck with just a few to work with as so many call in sick..last minute..and most of the time it is not a valid sickness..but rather just an excuse..

In spite of many not liking Wal-Mart..and that is fine..however a lot of what is said about Wal-Mart is either half the truth..such as this petition is..or totally untrue..

I also meant to add..Wal-Mart has also sent home workers who came in sick..Which I think is a good thing for the public..and a great policy..Good for Wal-Mart on that one...

thannxxx. this would not be allowed in South Africa.. Wal Mart needs to urgently re evaluate its human rights.. for their employers... the staff need to seek some advice from the law regarding their rights

Their UK operation ASDA is known as the bum patters store so called because of the continuous use of images of people patting their back pocket. What their ad writer must have forgotten is this Americanism is lost on an UK audience as we don't have a clue what a"Pocket book" is and in any case keeping your wallet, cash, cheque book, credit cards etc in such an accessable position would be an invitation to the criminal fraternity to pick that pocket! So I'm not surprised their labour relations are so right wing! I of course would echo Elaines comment and close the lot down nothing but cathedrals of commercialism and exploitation of workers, animals, farmers, and the general public! I once attended a lecture by an accountant who produced figures for the interset on supermarket overnight cash depost holdings. These telephone number sized amounts would equal the turnover not the profit of the best run tiny general store business in a small town or village. No wonder they are so intent on putting all small businesses out existance as they march throuth the high streets of the world!

Petition signed.

Wal-Mart deserves many demerits for the many things they do and have in their stores: ill-treatment of their employees, inferior products, sweatshops and so on. This is one person among many that do NOT shop at Wal-Mart.

TY, Tierney.

Having just read Dees post the full picture begins to emerge of a patronising employer obviously only concerned with screwing the lost drop of blood out of each employee. Has anyone dared to ask why people are so sick at this company? Have the company investigated it by anything other than a cost benefit analasys? If my employees were constantly calling in sick I would make one of two assumptions that is of course if they were not actually sick, either they are lazy s*ds or there is something radically wrong with my setup and from the tone of the conditions laid out it sounds to me like a recipe for threats and bullying built into the system I'm surprised the conditions don't include standing in the store with Dunce's cap on like the old UK Victorian schools used to humiliate children with, who did not perform well! Sickness time is often the result of stress in the job,Taking a sickie releaves some of the stress and in a target sales environment there is no doubt plenty of room for stress to flourish at all levels of the operation!

signed the petition and added a few lines of my own to the petition. I certainly won't shop there. There are other stores I can get the same things. They treat their employees very bad. It's been noted before in other "shame on Wal-Mart" with the smiley face frowning.

How shameful for a sick employee to inconvience their employer as such.

Being facetious can work both ways...

Signed sealed and sent...

I saw something about this on the news. Walmart inserted into their sick day policy that no employee would be fired if they are ill with H1N1. Their policy from what was said is that employees have 3 sick days but do not receive a pay for the first day, the sick day pay starts on the second day, they would have to use a vacation day or personal day in order to be paid for the first day out ill. The spokes person from Walmart made these statements to the news caster.

That is a problem with a lot of jobs here in North America, is that there is no sick pay and if you can't afford to take the day off, you go to work sick. When I was pregnant at my last job, they asked me to leave, and claimed I wasn't doing my job, so I could just take my mat leave now. My job was quite a bit of lifting and I was doing my job, but I was a little slower, as I was pregnant. I was actually hired to run a section of a store due to my training and experience, but it turned out to be just a lifting, stocking job. It was a Union job, so I didn't leave when they asked me to. I did have sick days there. I am now at another job and there are no sick days at all, so being a one income family neither my daughter, nor myself can be sick and stay home. As I said that is a problem, as it spreads it around and also a person cannot get better as fast.

It would seem North America still has labour relations borrowed from the UK's Victorian era! Do they still send children down mines and up chimneys!

"Having just read Dees post the full picture begins to emerge of a patronising employer obviously only concerned with screwing the lost drop of blood out of each employee. Has anyone dared to ask why people are so sick at this company?"

They do not target people who are actually ill..And there is no great onset of ill workers there..What they do target and rightfully so..are those that just want the day off and are not really sick..
Out partying all night is not a just excuse to pretend to be sick and take off..

The policy cuts down on people who are abusing time off without a good cause..and perhaps giving the job to someone who wants to work..
