Surely, you must be aware that Congress has debated health care reform for months, but, Americans have already decided. By an overwhelming majority, we want a "robust public option"

"By an overwhelming majority, we want a "robust public option"" Huh? If that was the case it would have passed easily. From Rasmussen Reports today, the most accurate polling service in the last 2 elections (they nailed to the point Obama's election and last's weeks as well): The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 45% now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. Most (52%) remain opposed.
Only 25% Strongly Support the plan while 42% are Strongly Opposed.

Look I think people who want the public option have their heart in the right place, and for a guy who is paying his insurance out of his own pocket it sure sounds good. Except in my short 52 years I have yet to see a government run program be done right. It always costs much more than forecast and the service is invariably worse than we expect.
This won't pass the senate of course because of the above poll numbers. As someone who has worked with pediatric cancer patients, I really have few complaints about insurance companies. For the most part I have been pleasantly surprised at some of the experimental treatments they pay for. I do think we would, in the long run, be much better off by other changes like eliminating pre-existing condition denials, allowing insurance to be sold across state lines, etc. Then providing low-income families with government payment vouchers to buy insurance on the market or do something similar to Medicare Advantage (which will be cut if this law passes) which is basically funded by the government, but run by private insurance companies. Medicare Advantage is very popular with seniors because it offers better coverage than regular Medicare.
