With starvation threatening one-sixth of the world's population, and the West's technological solutions called into question--the Green Revolution of the 1950s and 1960s failed to solve the problem, and now the Gene Revolution, or agricultural biotechnolo

I hate to rain on the parade of that smiling man in the picture but the earth has two billion more people than it can support with potable water and arable land. Two billion deaths are inevitable in the near future, be it famine , plague or whatever..

Thanks Tierney! Good info. I personally feel we have done more damage with pesticides and dangerous chemicals in fertilizers, ect. than the world realizes. Some irreversable, expecially those that destroy species of insects that are valuable to the balance of our environment. Each time that happens, suddenly we are faced with having to create something else to replace that insect to keep a balance and it destroys something else and the war goes on. I'm all for keeping it organic! Let nature rule in it's place and we all benefit. The rich and the poor. Sounds like a winner to me for all concerned.

the so called Green Revolution was NO revolution, it was word used by chemical companies to promote the use of fertilizer and opened the door to GMO's, what a scandal... of course the use of Green makes us want to believe that was a good thing. Now this is sponsored by SC Johnson... give me a break, and they will give up to what was it $25,000 US dollars, this from a Billion dollar company that gets who knows how much in tax write offs that are subsidized by us... say NO to all Chemical farming and be sure to the best that you can that you do not buy into things because they are GREEN or use that word, after all we have wars now with names like ENDURING FREEDOM, again Give me a Break !! NO NO GMO AND NO TO MONSANTO !! they created hunger whether by intent or not....

That was a hefty article, with several interesting points raised, including the eventual and inevitable failure of genetically-modified crops, as insects will continue to adapt. I wonder if any large agricultural operations will take Miguel Altieri's advice into account, and whether it will work as well as he predicts.
