Kaparot (the spelling sometimes varies slightly) is a ritual that involves swinging a live chicken while praying that it symbolically assumes your sins, then slaughtering it and eating or donating the meat.

Thank You Tierney. More sadistic cruelty to Gods innocent creatures ...sigh..

Chickens are intelligent, funny and loving animals.

Animals deserve better than much that humans do to them. Humans need to rethink their ways.

Those that claim this ritual is essential to there religious observance should perhaps listen to those of their faith that say it is not and use some alternative token like money! God would no doubt be happier that his creatures were not abused in his name!

I really do not understand why this is going to happen again. Their rabbis have told them that they can use a five dollar bill which is equivalent to a live chicken. I thought the Ultra Orthodox would listen to their rabbis.

So if the chicken absorbs your sins and then you eat the chicken...where do your sins go? There is so much animal torture perpetrated for religious superstitions. What kind of depraved individual "worships" a god that condones torturing sentient beings?

This is beyond belief and would be laughable if it weren't so horrific. A person sins and swings a chicken around and the chicken assumes the sins. If you believe in this, then don't sin in the first place. Don't pass your sins off on an innocent chicken. If I were a believer in this, could I commit crimes and then be forgiven because "the chicken did it"? Humans are a plague upon the planet!

Anne, excellent comment. So many of these rituals started so long in the past, that one would think that by this error in mans development, that he could understand that all life is sacred, even the chicken. How can the torture of an animal be at all God loving under any religion. I think the Leadership needs to be more forceful in coming out to state, that this ancient ritual is simply that, ancient, out of date, and no longer acceptable.

An animal cannot take on the sins of a human, a human must sacrifice of him or herself for it to be so.

A GOD OF LOVE???????????????????????

We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our
distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they
were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human
form. ~William Ralph Inge

God help us. God is love. Love is kindness, compassion, caring, mercy, forgiveness. Why is it that "religions" get it so wrong? "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you" I am sure this applies to chickens as well?
Who cares if the ritual is ancient or not? It should be stopped in the name of love and mercy.

Henriette Matthijssen (154)

Religions are corrupt as our governments. They only look out for profits at what cost! Ancient ritual or not, it is evil/cruel to abuse & cause pain/suffering to God's creatures. Thou shall not kill, what part of this commandment does humans DO NOT UNDERSTAND! Only do to other living beings, what you yourself can easily experience! Thanks with tears, Tierney for all the innocent chickens!

Friday September 10, 2010, 12:50 pm
Religious customs in all religions were mostly created & practiced because of fear of the unknown and superstitions. It is wrong for many rituals to continue today when they involve cruelty to any living being. Today it is practiced as a tradition by educated humans that know better. I don't believe God wanted any of his animals treated in such a manner. Bottom line: Kapparot is illegal, inhumane and unnecessary. It is animal cruelty.

This is one of the glaring examples of why I left all forms of organized religion decades ago. Man, and I do mean the gender, created a diety in his own image, one that is full of hate, judgement, revenge, intolerance, power hungry, and so on. The need to believe in a diety that constantly needs atonement is a mirror of that groups own actions against humans and other creatures we share this planet with. I pity all of you who condone this action for the sake of your self-rightous beliefs. What makes you think that ALL life is not sacred? Oh yea, your religion.
Perhaps someday our planet will be free of religion, especially the fundamentalist types that are so full of darkness and hate and disregard for anything outside of themselves and their pea-brain mentality. What a glorious day that will be!

As a Christian I find that the killing of animals to eat or for some sick and twisted ritual is so not pleasing to God. It would not be me murdering one of his creations.. that is for the stupid and ignorant. They did not hear God say he see every sparrow that falls..and I sure would not want to be the one covered in blood with one of his creations dead in my hands.. nope rather not thanks.

It is interesting to me that some preach personal accountability but use scapegoats instead. And those usually pick on those that have no voice. Perhaps one day all people will be able to move beyond killing and abusing innocents of any type for personal gain. (or for any reason, for that matter.)

People who are cruel to animals do not love God. These are satanic rituals, these are dark cruel people with no love, no feelings who inflict pain and suffering on helpless & defenceless animals for their own gratification...nothing to do with religion! My heart aches for the suffering all creatures endure through the ignorance & evil of some so called humans..It's sickening..God help them. Thank you, Tierney.

PLEASE CHECK THE FACTS! This misinformation is purely anti-Semitic propaganda. Nothing more. The web site, which I shall not advertise, states,"Covering Orthodox Judaism since 2004." Nonsense. After speaking with over 20 experts, not one had ever heard of such a thing, "...Never! Not even in the Old Country." This is hate mongering. Practice love instead.

Anyone who participates in this ritual is very sick and deranged and Eileen, it is absolutely true how chickens are used in rituals called Sasdaporos and many people, including some Jewish Leaders have tried to stop it. Here is one link
Kapparot is not mentioned in the Torah or in the Talmud. The custom is first discussed by Jewish scholars in the ninth century. They explain that since the Hebrew word gever means both "man" and "rooster", punishment of the bird can be substituted for that of a person and some still practice to this day.

Dear Henriette,

I am sending you a copy of my comment on this outlandish lie first, because you forwarded it to me.

I do believe your intentions are good and you are a kind-hearted soul, but dispersing this hateful garbage is wrong.

The original message to you states, "...they refuse to stop claiming that it is an ancient ritual!" It is NOT done, nor had even elderly Jewish people were offended at the thought.

The web site is a farce. Just because it's online does NOT mean it's true. For heavens sake, did this sound like something a deeply religious person would do?

The Orthodox Jewish people are kind and gentle to man and beast. This is pure and simple anti-Semitic propaganda.

There is enough hate in this world. Spreading more is a sin in all faiths. Please, consider the source before you become a pawn in the hate-game.

Blessings to You and Yours',

This is so stupid. The chicken assumes your sin, then you eat the chicken which contains your sin.So you will eat your sin also and get it back inside of you. What then-repeat or do you eliminate your sin when you go to the bathroom.Hey jokers-use the 5 dollars instead.Makes more sense. When will mankind wise up.I am a Christian and I worship in a Church that does not need to kill and abuse animals to get our sins forgiven.I believe in a GOD that forgives my sins by me merely asking for forgiveness.I do not think we will see these brutal jokers in Heaven when we get there.GOD will probally reject them for their brutal lives

Ah well, while we are all being stoooopid.

Oh, so Paganism is still alive today? I thought it died with enlightenment. Blink blink!

This makes me want to give up on the human race. I used to have a bit of sympathy for the Jewish race but now..... I'm going to hate to lose my best friend over this. I guess she just doesn't know what her Jewish ancestors are now doing to hens.

I'm going to tell my 7 hens how much I love them for trading organic grain for eggs and I will take the opportunity while speaking to them, to warn them about Jewish people.

No way would I ever hurt them or allow anyone to hurt them. They are a precious part of my existence.

I'm not Jewish by the way.

I will however warn them about Jews................

I sure hope Eileen Novak is right and not the site...but miracles dů happen especially when things like this are approached with love and not with condemnation. If this were true, I absolutely disapprove of the ritual but I won't condemn the group or the religion because hatred never works.... I'm really sorry to read so many hateful statements. Whoever came up with the idea of using a chicken to take away your sins must have been a few eggs short of a dozen. If you need to sacrifice something to take away your sins, sacrifice your money. Money is at the root of most evil, so the price of your salvation should be your money. All animals are innocent and should not be made to pay for the sins of evil, vile people.

Antonio Amador (60)
Monday September 13, 2010, 3:38 am
Fortunately for me, I'm "religion free" :). We all have our beliefs one way or the other without the necessity of sacrifices of any kind. I don't understand a God that requires and enjoys a sacrifice. Thank you for sharing.

Julie D (38)

Thanks to Tierney for alerting us to this ghastly practice. Unfortunately the Judaic idea of dumpng your sins on a scapegoat, or it seems, chicken, has a long tradition, but then how many other religions also torture animals in the name of their sect? I recall seeing all the sheep outside blocks of flats in Algeria one Sept. waiting to be slaughtered by each family as part of their Eid celebrations and recently haven't we all been shocked by the sacrifice of thousands of animals to Kali in Nepal because the practice was outlawed in India? And let us not forget the hidden horrors of the commercial slaughterhouse. I wonder if God will forgive any of us?

If they're willing to follow an ancient lifestyle ALL the time, every day in every way; if they're willing to give up indoor plumbing, running water, modern medical treatment, high tech items like PCs, cell phones, and the rest, then they can claim affection for ancient rituals and adherence to them makes sense. Otherwise, it's just hooey!

To compare this ancient Jewish ritual with Satanism is hateful.

You are saddened that parents are teaching their children what they know? Do you object to ALL parents teaching their children what they know? Or are you being selective in who is allowed to pass on their lifestyle to their children, and who isnít?

Please try to remember that ALL parents teach their children what they believe in. This is no different even for the Catholics that say the pope is right to hide pedophiles and let them keep committing crimes against children.

Every practicing Catholic has forgiven every pope for every atrocity committed against everyone since the beginning of the Catholic church. The church as proven that it will aways commit atrocious crimes against humanity at every chance it gets to punish non-believers (or even believers in the case of the Salem witch hunts). And they teach their children to forgive the pope, but I'll bet most of them believe in the death penalty.

To be upset that parents teach their children what they believe just doesn't make any sense to me. It's exactly what parents are supposed to do.

There is no place in the bible that forbids the use of inventions. It only forbids the activity of ďworkĒ to use them on the Sabbath. The bible also requires people to take care of their bodies. It says nothing about HOW they are to tend to their own health, and it certainly doesnít forbid doctors and medicine.

Itís so sad to me to see so many hateful posts here, by people who believe they are loving. I have no doubt that your wishes are in the best interests of the animals, but you donít seem to hear how hateful you are towards those who behave in ways that you disapprove of.

I have been guilty of this on more than one occasion, but it is especially noticeable when anti-Semitism (or any other anti-group) is so loudly targetted, with no love at all for humans who behave like humans.

And let me point out that, most likely, the vast majority of you were born into meat-eating families, and most of them still consume meat and dairy. Do you treat them with as much hate for contributing to the torture of farm animals, as you are so free to express against the Jews?
