Is tomato a fruit or vegetable? The answer to this question is not straight. Tomato can be both, a fruit or a vegetable, depending upon your perspective. The confusion if tomato is a fruit or a vegetable, is as old as tomato itself.

We were always taught in school (a long time ago in my case!!) that vegetables grew in the ground while fruits all grew above ground on branches/vines etc. Of course that is not really the case since peas and runner beans both grow above ground and are classed as vegetables. However,to my mind, tomatoes should be classed as a fruit.

the way I understand it is that vegetables produce seeds on the outside or are themselves seeds in the case of beans or peas( the exception being strawberries which are classified as a fruit) and fruits all have the seeds on the inside ................according to that then the tomato is a fruit
