After 15 years in shackles, perhaps it was inevitable that when the moment came for rescuers to free Mely the orang-utan, no one could find the key to unlock her padlock and chain.

i am stunned. i wrote to every indonesian official i could find. i was so certain that i was wasting my time; thinking we could help an animal in some tiny town half way across the world. i guess it pays to be a little delusional. never give up!

I am thrilled that Mely is free. That beautiful, calm face despite everything she went through. I signed the petitions, etc.; but, never really expected success so quickly.

I'M VERY HAPPY SHE IS FREE!!
ORANG UTANS (literally: MEN OF THE FOREST) usually MUST spend the first 7 years of their lives with their caring mothers, who TEACH them what to EAT, how to CLIMB a tree, to FEAR threats like snakes etc. etc.
Consequently at the Rescue Center they have to teach her EVERYTHING NOW....
I LOVE ORANGUTANS!!!!!!!!
The REAL PROBLEM of HABITAT LOSS is due to DEFORESTATION that DESTROYS RAIN FORESTS (30-40 meters tall tree, DIFFERENT SPECIES OF TREES, and PLANTS, BIODIVERSITY) TO MAKE ROOM FOR PALM OIL PLANTATIONS (2-3 meters high palms, MONOCOLTURE).!!!
LET US DO WHATEVER WE CAN FOR THEM ALL TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Such Wonderful News !!! I hope her ex owner is now facing some extreme form of punishment. !!!
I also am amazed at how quickly this lil' darling was rescued.!!!!! I didn't have my hopes up too high.

Of course, the real problem for these gentle creatures & other Animals that live in the same kind of environment, is the rapid destruction of their HABITATS, just so greedy humans can plant lots of Palm trees for Oil. !!!
That Has To STOP !!! It Has To STOP Happening Right NOW !!!!!.

Thank you all for your comments.

I wanted to show a happy picture for this article, but the picture of the rescuer trying to open the padlock really touches my heart, Mely must have been so frightened when she saw all of those people coming towards her, yet she is practically holding the man's hand, it is as if she knew that they were there to save her...finally! Who could resist those big brown eyes!

I am surprised that they haven't mentioned the owners fate, I can only assume that nothing will happen to him, I am somewhat disappointed as the Orang-utan is an endangered species, I would have at least liked for him to have been fined the 300 that he wanted to sell her for, just so he could see the irony!

I do not really have words to express the disgust I feel for that man, I can only hope that he will get his just deserts someday, along with his family and friends who condoned this cruelty and allowed it to continue.

I am so pleased that she will finally know what it is like to be an orang-utan, hopefully she will be given a clean bill of health and will eventually be able to mingle with her own kind, I bet she was so excited and probably overwhelmed to hear all the other orang-utans greeting her on her arrival. I truly wish her all the happiness.

I am smiling through my tears that this sweet girl is finally free and getting the help she needs. Thank-you to the woman who made this happen. I hope her captor is facing severe punishment, to send a message to others that this will NOT be tolerated. The best/worst part of all this, is that Mely bears no grudge to humans after all she has endured.

This is why I rescue. My house and life are both chaotic messes, with never enough time to do everything, but I do it for the animals. It is NOT THEIR FAULT, IT IS THE FAULT OF THE HUMANS WHO MISTREAT THEM! Animals still appreciate all you do for them, no matter what the neglect and/or abuse they suffered prior to rescue. Animals, unlike people, do not hold grudges, as long as you truly love them. Thanks to the skies that sweet, forgiving shy Mely will finally know love, companionship, mental stimulation, and good physical health.

Such cruelty, and all for ignorance. Anyone thinking uneducated peasants are kind souls should see this. All they can " care" about is the hordes of children they unthinkingly produce for world overpopulation. And then they wonder why they live in poverty.

This is wonderful Alison, I'm so pleased for her! The person who'd kept her should have been jailed, if they do that in Indonesia!

Oh my - Mely is free ! I have thought about her evr since I read about her cruel and desperate life. The look that was in her eyes when the photo was taken - begging for help - has haunted me. I am so overwhelmed that I am crying so I can't hardly see how to type. I love orangutans ! And Melly's tragic life just broke my heart. The look in her eyes and on her face now that she is free in her enclosure is so touching. You can see the difference in her attitude . Thank God there are so many people who care about animals and place so much value on their lives and are willing to do whatever it takes to help them. HAVE A GREAT LIFE ,
MELY _ HAPPY AND FREE OF THE CHAINS OF BONDAGE !
