The Gateway City was once home to more than 40 mounds and was known as Mound City before the St. Louis moniker stuck. Urban development destroyed all the mounds but Sugar Loaf.

I just finished reading two fantastic books about just this!!! The second is People of the Thunder. It is in a series by a husband and wife archaeological/writer team, last name Gear. ( Sorry, Lyme Brain - swiss chees memory ). I am so very glad that this mound was bought by First Nations people!! That is just what they wrote about in the epilogue - The terrible loss of so many of these mounds, with most of the remaining ones in private ownership. This is great news! Check out the books if you want to know more about the cultures that built the mounds. Nearly all knowledge of First Nations history has been lost. The european "nouveau venue" mostly know NOTHING of the great achievements and advanced cultures here before their ancestors started the genocide...
