MEXICO CITY -- Each pink taxi comes with a beauty kit, a GPS system and an alarm button. The new fleet of 35 cabs in Mexico's colonial city of Puebla are driven exclusively by women and don't stop for men. The cabs cater

I think it makes a very loud statement to tell the truth. Whatever works.
Thanks Terry

Well I for one would definitely use a Pink Taxi - especially late at night. I know many other women who would too. I've had way too many experiences of violence from men in my life - and I'd be grateful not to have to worry about male taxi drivers when I travel alone and need a cab. We need something like this here in the USA, I'd say!

I think this is a truly great idea. I'd like to see it in more cities, where often women want to go somewhere at night (like to a chuch service, or to play cards), but don't drive. Lots of places it isn't safe for them to even walk to their cars, if they do drive. I agree wholeheartedly with Alice, that when travelling alone, it would sure feel a lot safer if something like this was available. Also, having been a Navy gal, something like this would have been *very* handy around base. A ride, without having to depend on others, and without having the stigma that many men have regarding women in service... that they're all an easy Lxy! I know I got very disgusted with some marines for thinking that women should fall all over them, and be thankful that they were noticed by these (self-thought of) hunks. Now that I'm older, I think my husband would not always feel he needed to drive me at night, if there was something similar around.
Gals, how about we start something in our own areas, similar to this for the elderly ladies who want to party, but don't want to risk being robbed or worse?

The comment about addressing the harrassment is true, we do need to deal with inappropriate male taxi driver behaviour but far too many women fail to do so. Also, they have to go through a totally unpleasant experience or even a dangerous one first. I think that these pink taxis actually encourage women to go out and do address the issue of harrassment in that they are not going to be in a position to face it. Until we can change some men this is an issue that is not going to go away.
