The biggest victory yet of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to raise the wages and improve the working conditions of tomato pickers came yesterday when Walmart voluntarily joined the s Fair Food Program, which provides more pay & better work laws.

Hhmmm... is this an agreement with Florida tomato pickers only?? I'm thinking that this is a PR stunt and only a tiny step forward if it's for Florida only.

Sue, as far as I can see it is for this specific grower's association. I was thinking that it may be a small, but precedent-setting, step that other grower's organizations could now copy. And I suppose the people for which it's a small step are grateful. One of the big problems in farm harvesting is that so few of the workers are associated with anything, which is why they can be so easily intimidated and coerced, especially if they have entered illegally. It's a difficult situation.
