Morsi's decree exempting all his decisions from legal challenge caused fury amongst his opponents on Friday who accused him of hijacking the revolution. Leading liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei says Morsi "appointed himself Egypt's new pharaoh".

Many of us predicted this was going to happen once the Muslim Brotherhood was elected in Egypt. The praise Morsi received for brokering the Israel/ Hamas truce has given him confidence to ride roughshod over Egypt's short-lived revolution. Make no mistake, this is a coup d'etat to all intents and purposes.
What is it about Arabs that they find it so difficult to handle democracy? Let's hope this jumped up little pharaoh bites the dust very soon.

Morsi has now set himself up to govern like Pharoah. The democracy promised to the Egyptians will not happen. Six months ago Morsi declared ' JIHAD IS OUR PATH AND DEATH IN THE NAME OF ALLAH IS OUR GOAL. This Leopard has never changed his spots and shame on our Governments for being blind to what his true agenda is.

There is no end to the egotistical insane power hungry radicals and to think Obama supports these lunatics with tax payers money is enough to make ones blood boil! Birds of a feather flock together! Especially when they are Muslims!! I sure hope the people in Egypt are waking up fast!!

Sadly, not surprising given this megalomaniacal Islamist's ugly comments even before he was elected where he said (when he thought no one was listening) that once he was in power he would create a new Muslim conquest of Egypt and all the Coptic Christians (the real original Egyptians before Islam's invasion and conquest) would either have to convert of leave. Tens of thousands of them have been forced out already. Where is the outrage in the western media and with our brain dead leaders?

Democracy in muslim countries:

1. Depose evil dictator (preferably in bloody revolution)
2. Hold elections
3. Elect new even eviller dictator

A theocrat like Morsi, representing the Muslim Brotherhood, will act as theocratically. Morsi acting like another Islamic dictator is about as surprising as an apple hitting the ground after it is separated from the tree.

Monica R,

I suggest three adjustments:

1. Depose evil SECULAR dictator (preferably in bloody revolution)
2. Hold elections
3. Elect new even eviller ISLAMIST dictator
4. Stop this "elections and democracy" non-Islamic nonsense.

Why do you care so much when we have so many problems right here?

Why is righty always beating the war drums?

I don't know why anyone is surprised to see this. Either Morsi seizing all power or that electing the Muslim Brotherhood, if that IS what happened, would not inevitably lead to this conflict. It seemed to me that the Arab Spring protests that felled Mubarak were fueled by youth and the desire for freedom, yet the outcome is simply another group of old men seizing power and autocratically attempting to control the lives of everyone else according to their own peculiar view of the world. I don't believe the President is supporting the wrong horse here - he said plainly not long ago that he was not sure any longer if Egypt was an ally. He is working with what he's got to work with there and that isn't much. Change, real change, can never be imposed from without, not forever as has every "world" conqueror from ancient Greece to the Romans to the Soviet Union eventually learned. It must come from within and that process is still going on in Egypt and will in other countries as well until the will of the people is finally met. I believe China will learn this lesson as well, the time of absolutist rule is ending. Everywhere. Slower in some places, but the world has become a global community and just like the toddlers many countries are, they can see what life is like in free societies and they know that freedom is what they want. It is that desire of the people that will topple theocratic or political absolutists in the end. It won't be easy, it won't be peaceful, but in the end the people of the world will all be free people. If we last long enough that is and aren't exterminated by the planet as it cleanses itself of the toxins we have spewed into the air, soil and water over the last 150 years. Dictatorships of whatever kind are never permanent, the only thing that is, is the yearning of the human spirit to be free. That thirst is unquenchable and always has been. Morsi is learning that now, but all oppressors of the people will ultimately be forced to learn the same lesson.

Jason, do you know that Egypt just got 10Billion in "loans" which will never be repaid, including 1Billion - a gift from Obama.

Having Islamists in power cost more, and it becomes our problem.

Thus setting the stage for Arab Winter (or Arab Spring II).
