The city of Nara in the centre of Japan is home to a herd over 1,000 Sika Deer, who roam the streets seemingly unperturbed by traffic jams and passing pedestrians.

I live in Virginia where you worry about getting lyme disease. Some find the deer a nuisance eating their flowers and vegetables.. the people visiting nara go up to the very tame deer and pet them, get pictures of their kids next to the deer, and are fascinated by them. We went to nara to see the Buddha, which was amazing, but I remember the people interacting with the deer even more.

Love it! Japan also has the very cool Cat Island-Bunny Island and a couple others! I 4 one really appreciate the respect and willingness to coexist with these animals peacefully! Thanks Giana

That is so cool! It just goes to show that we can coexist peacefully if we humans are willing to make allowances :-)

Thx. Giana, I'm with Les, they carry Lyme and Ticks which is deadly to our dogs. Even in Town. In Wisconsin they cause a lot of car crashes and some have CW Desease, and there are over 1,000,000,000 so Carol, the Hunters are coming soon. They are horrible to see starving in the winter, so at least this way they feed a whole family, not the sick ones. The DNR Rangers take those away.

I regularly donate to the main organization responsible for upkeep of Nara deer. The NPO organization takes care of deer involved in traffic accidents, distributes grass when food supplies are low, and conducts other activities to maintain the deer population in Nara.

Really strange. I'm happy to see that they're not causing people into a slaughter frenzy but I wonder if their habitat has been destroyed.
