And why are cats and not humans used in this research? What did they (cats) have to endure to make it good for us? Thanks for posting.

I interact with both FeLV and FIV cats on a regular basis. Interesting that they're more affectionate and gentle than other abandoned, feral, or discarded cats. Perhaps that's because they're ostracized out of ignorance more.
Aside from that, are we to assume that cats are used in laboratory expoeriments in human HIV research?

Noted. Leave the Cats alone. Test on people with Aids and Hiv.

I welcome this news but I sincerely hope that no cats are being delibrately infected to cause this reaction.

I also wonder sit cats went through for this study. Just because they are sick (an hopefully not made sick) does not mean they should suffer. Diseases have their place in the world though to control population.
I had 2 FiV cats, both lived i=on the streets and were fed by someone I know. One died 6 1/2 months ager he came. He was one for he best cats ever and I was quite distraught. I tired but who knows howl ing he had the infection? The second is fine. I give him supplements and we'll see what happens. He and never and much human contact but has come along way. So far so good.

Are the cats being injected with these viruses? If so, I vote against it and any animal experimentation.

As others here, hope no kitties were infected on purpose or in any way mistreated for this study. Also wonder if the reverse is true...could humans hold a key to FIV?

This is a terrible story!!! It's upset me terribly... Disturbing and all about animal testing. WRONG!!! We do not use animals for animal testing.

GGmaSheila love your subtle remark I think its a better idea to test on humans for FIV
Can not believe how people do not seem to CARE what these innocent cats will suffer they are not facing reality "WILL THESE KITTIES SUFFER"
YES WITHOUT DOUBT ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS so for those who think it is good news I feel saddened and ashamed

I agree with many others here. While it's great that there may be a vaccine for HIV, it's very disturbing that cats are involved. I shudder to think what researchers would put a cat through to make a name for themselves.

Why are they abusing Cats? Its people with the disease that need to be researched for a vaccine not animals!

Everyone has the right to an opinion
Reading some of the comments I can understand why so much animal cruelty is just taken for granted and people really just do not CARE they only care about themselves

I'm just disgusted this news comes from horrid cruelty inflicted on these poor helpless cats. Do the bloody testing on humans and stop using animals already. Where exactly is the logic 4 testing vaccines made 4 humans on animals anyway. I'm totally peeved.

I can understand the feelings of those aghast at using animals in medical research. It would be nice if we could eliminate animal-based experiments entirely - but we are not yet at that level of technological or biological sophistication. Though I agree that researchers should use alternatives - in-vitro tests, computer models, human volunteers - when possible, I also accept that there are times when white rats or the like are the best way. Even the notoriously left-wing cartoon "Captain Planet" defended animal research under certain circumstances. I do hope that the cats were treated with kindness and respect, and suffered as little as possible.

There is never, ever a good enough reason to force another living being to endure an experiment without their consent and since animals can't give their consent, leave them the F#@K alone!!! If you wouldn't want it done to your child, how could you ever consider doing it to any other living being.

Thank-you for this really interesting article. I knew cats and humans had similar health problems.and that cats have been studied on several fronts.....for instance...the voice pattern of a deaf kitten is the same as that of a deaf human baby. ........

I am utterly shocked by the ignorance of some members we all have our own beliefs but the stupidity of some
"I really hope they suffered as little as possible" Remove heads from the sand face up to reality of course they suffered desperately and died dreadful deaths at least be honest and stand up for your convictions the weakness of some of the comments I would respect people more if they openly admitted they felt it was they agreed with animal experimentation for whatever reason . Trying to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds is just sooooo weak. Show honesty not lots of sympathy then I hope they did not suffer silly silly comments Trying to sit on both sides of the fence makes me so angry Stand up say what you believe oooh

I cannot stop thinking what they are doing to these cats.... I donīt care if itīs to help humans, no animal deserves to be subject to horrible stuff in a lab!!

Cats FIV may be similar to a person's HIV - but - they are NOT the same!! A person's virus should be tested on a person - NOT on a cat. I HATE animal testing and now I am crying again!!
