Tell Veterinarians: Devocalization Is Mutilation!

The cutting of vocal cord tissue just to suppress or remove a dog's or cat's voice, or devocalization, is widely and rightly considered an act of animal cruelty.

Thanks for sharing my petition which is on I am a volunteer with Coalition to Protect and Rescue Pets, the all-volunteer unfunded group which successfully banned devocalization in MA despite heavy opposition from the veterinary association. We need signatures on our ONE petition. There is strength in numbers. Please continue sharing This cruelty must end. It's too late for my dog Porter, but I want to save any other dogs from a lifetime of suffering, or even death.

This practice is a really absolute nonsense.
The owners of these poor pets do not love them but just want to have a status symbol.
Fortunately in Italy is a practice almost unknown, our pets are lucky.

It is an act of animal cruelty. Any animal should have the right to exercise it's personal right to speek in the language that they are accustomed to. They use their vocal cords to alert a person that they don't want you in their space or that they don't feel safe around you or to stay away from their pups. They use their vocal cordes to let you know when they need to go out to do their business. They use their vocal cords to let you know when they are in pain. They use their vocal cords to alert you to a possible intruder that you do not want in your yard or home un-invited. They use their vocal cords to let you know that they are pleased and happy or want to play. Man should NOT require or request that they animals undergo unneccessary and potentially harmful surgeries to "Shut them up" because they are too lazy to take an obedience corse to learn how to let the animal know when it is time to be quiet. I let my dog bark to let me know that others are around and then I praise the pup for doing so them let them know that everything is okay and now it's time to be quiet. The person is the one that needs the training and the animals should not have to suffer at the hands of convient surgery merely because you are too lazy to teach the pup what is right and acceptable and when it's time to be quiet. PRAISE goes a long way! You might try it sometime. Animals need the ability to be able to vocalize and any human who cannot and does not understand this has no business even owqning a pet. PUT A STOP TO DE-VOCALIZATION AS IT IS INHUMANE TREATMENT AND UN-NECESSARY. Better yet, devocalize humans instead! Horah!

Veterinarians have to know it's mutilation, and they should refuse to do it. But there are a lot of pet owners who want a quiet dog. I think it's most common with apartment dwellers whose landlords want quiet pets.

I knew a beautiful Basset Hound who was mutilated this way. This personable, extremely friendly dog tried to bark a greeting at me, but the most pathetic sounds came out... I would far rather have heard the rich sounds of another Basset Hound I knew - he was happy and joyful to see me, and let me know it - loudly! That is how a dog is SUPPOSED to communicate!

Any vet who would destroy a dog or cat's voice deserves to have the same done to him/herself. How would a vet feel if somebody cut their children's vocal cords because they hated the sounds of children's voices?

Any vet that would do this surgery is no true animal lover - he/she is merely a greedy opportunist and sociopath. Any vet caught doing this surgery needs to have their license revoked and "devocalized" (a nice way of putting it!) because justice demands that they suffer the same as their victims.

It's like cutting the vocal cords of a child because you don't like the noise he/she makes - and in the case of the dogs in this petition, just giving it up for adoption anyway. A doctor doing this to a human would be in prison. That's where these opportunistic vets belong.

Noted, Signed & Shared. This is nothing but mutilation and an unethical operation for all the risks and pain that the poor animal has to endure for the rest of their sad lives! It has no place in the practice of veterinary medicine accept if it is a medical necessity. Veterinarians are primarily doing this procedure as a convenience for lazy or intolerant pet owners who would rather make their pets suffer than to use behavior modification or just deal with a little barking or meowing! It is better not to get a pet than to put any dog or cat through this. How would they like it if someone cut their vocal chords! The American Veterinary Association is complicit in not only sanctioning this horrific procedure but implementing it. They should take a firm stand against it as being unethical and dangerous and helping to pass laws against it in all states! Instead of condoning it; they should be condemning it. It reflects very negatively on the AVMA.

Petition noted and signed, thank you Buffy for bringing this to everyone's attention! This is disgusting, how utterly cruel and barbaric, I cannot imagine how these animals that have no voice can feel - they have no "voice" in society as it is without deliberately taking it away from them. These vets need to be "struck" off and never to be allowed to work again in any country - they are not worthy to be called human beings!
