I guess hunting of the poor creatures is a game which the rich and famous play! Hence, those so called rich and famous must have been too happy to rally round to vote for the repeal of the law in banning hunting! It's really sad since these poor animals will soon become endangered species and may disappear from the face of the earth altogether! Just a thought!

Thanks Anne for sharing this info with us!

This misguided peice of legislation was so watered down by the bloodthirsty in parliament coupled with the difficulty of proscecution and unwillingness of the police to do their job when something happens on private property. It wants thouroghly amending or replacing with a much more simple act actually banning hunting period which this present act does not! The perpetrators of hunting have found dozens of ways to circumvent it, from ignoring it to physically intimidating witnesses to atrocities. So this act really wants repealing but something better needs to replace it first with out pandering to the interests of the sadistic bloodthirsty minority of influential participants!

Well, maybe only Tories read the Guardian. I don't care what David Cameron feels about fox hunting. What he should be doing is representing what the voters feel, and the majority of people in England want to see hunting with dogs remain banned. The Conservatives should be ashamed to support such evil.

I never liked David Cameron much & now I even dislike him more. It took years to abolish this nasty sport & now because it is the sport of the upper gentry & they & their like want it back I would be devastated if it did. I only voted for labour to ban it in the 1st place & that took long enough. We can not let this happen. Mind you, they still kill the fox using other methods & claim to have the odd accident with dogs catching foxes ! The government as far as I know has never prosecuted anyone for unlawfully killing a fox. What a bunch of softies we have. Get tough & once & for all ; it was banned & should remain banned.

It almost makes me believe that it's deliberately worded in a way to initally confuse you. I'm beginning to think that some people have voted incorrectly simply because I CANNOT accept that there are that many people out there who support hunting. Not anymore. Not in the 21st century. Aren't we past all this by now in Britain?!?! I am bitterly disappointed.

Raja ..this poll isn't really representative of public opinion in the UK..newspaper polls should be handled with care. Most Brits are against hunting..however the queen and her blood thirsty coven are not..in fact it is the toffs of Britain patic England who are keen to carry on their sacred right to shoot animals. They'd love to shoot their betters too..ie the working class /middle class so called "commoner's" many of whom have more class than the inbred fag ends of the aristocracy.
It is a worrying thought that these fops may soon be in government..for all labours faults, the rule of the chinless torie's will be far far worse, than anything Gordon Brown could conjure up.
Yes we are losing this poll,it would be nice to win it,however after exhorting everyone to get out and vote NO...stopping the tories getting into power is much more significant.
Anyway, spread the word,we have 20 hours to go..so please tell everyone to vote NO.

If you look at the comments (p5) someone snapped the hunting fraternity who discovered this poll:

http://www.hunting-directory.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1254865732/3

Which leads you to:

"Yet another poll on repeal. This time in what some of us would imagine is LACS’ favourite newspaper. Whoever initiated it presumably chose the forum on the assumption that the result would be predictable.

Should we vote & thus give credence to the poll? (I have taken the view that we should do whatever we can to bring out our vote on the footing that a poll of guardian readers will inevitably be assumed to understate the proportion of the population opposed to the ban, or, in this case, wanting repeal.)"

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/poll/2009/oct/06/hunting-davidcameron

So the hunting supporters have been voting, which is prob why the results are skewed.

I see Mark is saying it's OK to hunt the fox in the name of another creature. When we put ourselves in place of God that is the consequence every messup we make rquires another to right the previous messup. Interesting site listing all the wars that the US has indulged in the name of religion and they are still messing up! The UK foxhunting brigade make much of their conservation aspect as far as balancing nature is concerned. Clearly the balance is so skewed that it requires them to breed and import foxes to kill when there are few in an area! The same idiot logic prevails in partts of the US where they are hunting wolves and in other states the animals are endangered. That is the wonderfilly fully zipped up logic I love about hunters. Very few have the guts to actually simply state that they enjoy killing! Not that that would engender any more respect from me but those of the hunting fraternity that try to wrap it up as some cosy afternoon tea party with guns and dogs are clearly dafter than their more upfront and bloody colleagues! But then many politicians also hunt! QED!

chris b. (1455)
Thursday October 8, 2009, 1:56 am
Incidentally to those who labour under the delusion that foxhunting was banned in the UK. The legislation bans hunting with dogs and I believe a specific number of dogs constitutes an infringemnet. It is this this type of loophole that makes the legislation almost worthless as hunts use it and other anomalies to drive a carraige and pair through the law, never mind a pack of hounds and baying red coated mob! Oscar Wilde was so right in his description of the country gentleman hunter "The unpseakable in persuit of the inedible"

Only the idle rich and those or perhaps those with too much time on their hands at work are voting! In most opinion polls in the UK the figures are reversed which makes me wonder if what is actually happening is many he think as I do the legislation is flawed and are voting for repeal when what is wanted is substantive replacement legislation to ban all forms of hunting period never mind the with dogs stuff that the present act covers! It is probably some piece of pr hype by the influential hunting lobby to discredit the caring and compassionate!

I voted No of course.

I agree with Chris about Mark G's excuse they kill foxes in to 'protect' the bobwhite quail numbers.
This is used time and again by hunters. They 'have to' step in as champions to the rescue some other species by killing whatever species they deem to be threatening them.

Guess what. I'm sure they hunt Bobwhite Quail in S.C!!! So again, guess what. They then kill foxes in order to keep the quail numbers high enough for quail hunting! You get two, two species to hunt. All neatly rationalized and justified and more hunting all around.

The question is, what did all the foxes and bobwhite quail do before modern sport hunting? Never needed sport hunters to 'control' their populations. Nature does that. It's the usual egocentric view of humans, in this case hunters to justify hunting.

What little minds are these that would torture with dogs until the prey, in this case a Fox, is exhausted, scared, finally cornered as the great white hunter becomes a rather sick spectator while his dogs tear this terrified critter to shreds...It's a sick sport. This has always been a rich mans sport. Scary! Should the fox become a genuine health problem then that critter should be dealt with in a humane way..

Thank you Dandelion for this reminder.Hunting, on its face, is a noble pursuit in the struggle for survival. As it pertains to my NA heritage, it is to live, not taking more than is necessary for the hunter and/or his family and honoring the prey for its Spirit. Fox hunting is none of that! It's a blood sport that the wealthy indulged themselves for status, not survival, and the Spirit of their prey is ignored or abused as insignificant. I will vote "NO", understanding the intent of the way it has been worded. Fox hunting is barbaric, unfair and a vestige of an aristocracy that cared as little of the people they governed as the doomed fox they chased. Please vote "NO"!

Anyone WHO IS INVOLVED IN any and all FORMS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY should not wonder WHY their life is going "downhill" and becoming unmanageable, the reason is because of Y-OUR treatment of the Animals. YOU must stop or your life is going to get a whole lot 'worse", NOW. You have been forewarned, YOU must and WILL accept the consequences of your actions x10 against the GREAT Animal Kingdom and yourselves. AND so it is done......thank you, AMEN

If you look right into the eye of ANY animal , it is part of GOD you are seeing, please start acting accordingly or not.:):):)

The time when "I" start concentrating on Animal Cruelty alone is soon, it would be wise to consider this....... I AM very , very , very passionate about this, the fallout will be felt EVERYwhere. Thank you for your consideration. WE ARE ALL ONE

chris b. (1455)
Thursday October 8, 2009, 4:02 pm
Elaine, exactly, the unspeakable in persuit of the inedible! So the hunt is for the fun of killing nothing else or they would not have had to breed or import foxes into areas where the numbers were too low to support hunting. As for the idea that there is any nobility in hunting it is the nobility in the UK that do it along with a token few flat capped labour supporters and low class hunt servants who are only there on the sufference of their masters. As for hunting generally being noble it may well have been noble or rather essential for us to indulge in when we lived in caves but the UK unlike America does not permit it's citizens to starve or go short of medical care except for cases that fall through the gaps in the system occassionally, so there is no need to hunt anything in the UK out of necessity to eat! Those that hunt in the US for subsistance probably know no different as apparently people starve and get thrown out on the Street in the land of the free! Now just maybe that's why there is a queue of illegals waiting to stowaway on trucks in France on the way to the UK

"Its not allowed here in NC" Really? I guess you better call the NCWRC and set them straight which has set fox season for the month of January for firearms, and all year by dog. According to the WRC: "foxes may be taken with dogs both night and day on a year round basis in North Carolina."
I hunt, my father hunts, my grandfather hunted, as did his, as did his for millenia... As did yours. Put down the cheeseburger, get out of the Micky D's and the KFC's and get in the woods!

You have the face of a wolf do you believe in killing them too? just wanrding? Oh heck no my father did not hunt foxes that I know for a fact nor did my grandparents. Personally, I can't understand how anyone can find one ounce of pleasure in taking the life of an animal, to see it blown to pieces, or ripped apart by dogs. Also before I'm attacked for my comments...
NO! I do not eat any form of meat or fish.

Thanks Chris, particularly for your last comments!

It's a well known fact that foxes are bred, yes.... bred!! also lairs tended too, off season, in order to give these "Big" men in red coats the oportunity to hunt, torture fox cubs and devastate the countryside!! Many family pets also fall victim to this dispicable passtime!!!!

Of course, we all know this law is by no means without it's loopholes, but it was long fought for, and is better than no ban at all...

Hunting very sadly WILL be made law again if Cameron wins the next election, I'm sure of that!!!!!

Thankyou to everyone who voted No, and for your comments.

I've no doubt my ancestors did all manner of unspeakable things but I cannot see how the sins of the past justify the sins of the present and future. Sadly civilisation is a very slow process that has yet to reach some of the recently arrived in the US and some of those uncivilised persons were sadly exported from the UK! For that sin of my ancestors I humbly apologise to the many good and caring people of the US!

You know its pretty sick when one does have to chase a fox with a dog...I mean seriously, you call that hunting??? A true hunter doenst use things to tilt the balance it just shows a man isnt capable of doing it on his own...LOL

Dear Chris b. our ancestors only hunted what they needed to eat and survive.
Not for pleasure and they respected the animals, there was always a ritual before eating what they caught.
Well we call ourselves civilized. And true Gorilly Girl.

The sadest thing about the so called ban on hunting in the UK with dogs is how they circumnavigate the law by exercising hounds and of course they accidentaly pick up the fox scent and they are only trained to do one task, chase and kill the fox so they cannot stop them once they lock onto the scent well that's one of their idiot excuses. The police meanwhile are more intersted in harrasssing and arresting hunt sabatuers than the gathering of evidence for proscecution of these illegal hunters. Often turning a blind eye to the violent abuse by huntsmen and followers runnning down the sabs with their horses and hitting them with their whips Google in Hunt Saboteurs and Lush who are supporting the campaign of evidence gathering for proscecution. The videos are informative and show the unpleasent side of these idle toffs who the tory party supports and plans to repeal the anti hunt act and legalise this bloodthirsty killing for fun once again! Of course Winefred M is quite right that our ancestors hunted to eat and had to respect the animals which provided food, clothing and tools nothing abused or wasted then! Nowadays we don't need to hunt and it appears to only remain in places like the US who have no welfare systems in place for the poor who would otherwise starve or some have tried to convince me! The UK also has universal health care so I don't know why the richest country in the world has not. The reported third world conditions of many of the first nations are a disgrace and shame on America having stolen their lands and virtually killed of the animals they were hunting for subsistence. I hope I've got that right Gorilly Girl and any First Nation friends reading this!
