The sea cows have good hearing but may be less aware of sounds when they're sleeping.

Article still does not answer the question, thought it was going to.

Humans have made the oceans and other bodies of water much more noisy than they would be without us - the elevated noise levels may have something to do with the problems marine mammals seem to be having. I wonder if, at the very least, there could be legislation put in place to require that the propellers of speed boats be surrounded by a protective cage, so that the damage of an impact may be mittigated.

I don't much care for speed boats anyway, and don't see them as necessary - perhaps they could be banned in areas with manetee populations?

Kenneth - good comment. I can remember the first time that I saw a manatee, thinking, what a magnificent and interesting creature.

Can we really expect a manatee to get out of the way of all those speeding boats? I don't think any animal can do that.

The dugongs have been in the Florida waterways longer than human speedboats; Seminole canoes were not a problem. Easy answer: use hovercraft or go back to paddling canoes. I don't expect a dugong/manatee to understand a 45kph speedboat - or have to worry about a hovercraft or shallow draft airboat.

Manatees are wonderful animals! My mom lives in Florida and I see a few almost each time I visit. Almost each one has scars on it's back from the speedboats!

Thanks, Britt. We need to help the poor animals. First of all, drivers of speedboats should slow down and pay more attention.

Why can't a manatee deflector be required to be installed over the props of these speeding boats. I can think of two designs right off the top of my head that would protect the manatee and not interfere with the speed of the boat or collect weeds.

These gentle giants are slow swimmers. If you have ever been near their waters on a normal weekend day, you would see a grunch of boats speeding around like idiots. makes answering this question fairly obvious.

These speedboaters are brainless, and heartless idiots!! Maybe we should "ALLOW SWIMMING" in the waters that allow speedboats!! Perhaps some of these idiots racing their boats out there, would would end the same way the manatees do!!

Where I live there are a lot of Manatees, they are wonderful and gentle creatures!

It makes me angry when people run them over, I would love to run these bastard people over myself, give them a taste of their own medicine!!
