I became politically active and committed on the day 20 years ago when I realized I could stand on the front porch of my house and point to three homes where children were in wheelchairs, to a home where a child had just died of leukemia, to another

Yep, screwed up plenty, and if we don't get all this stopped and some reversed, we will only have the pictures. Thanks Shaheen

Brilliantly written, and so sadly true. Thank you, Chip Ward and thank you Shaheen for posting the story.

Good letter and yet we have a significant portion of our population that is of the drill baby drill mentality...sad!

And yet, I’ve seen your grandchildren--someone's grandchildren--driving up and down that unpaved road near my house, deliberately fishtailing, hitting those bumps (at the intersection of the road that no longer crosses the railroad tracks) at speed so that their cars bounce and bottom out; or revving their motors while sitting still so that when they take off, they leave black marks if they're on pavement, or throw gravel from under their tires if not. I've seen (and heard) them on their dirt bikes, going round and round in circles, for hours on end. I've seen them in their SUVs and half-ton pickups, and I've seen them out of their SUVs and pickups or whatever else they might be driving--while the vehicle idled in the driveway or the parking lot, empty: with the stereo blasting, so they can still hear it while they’re inside the house or store, or so that the heater or air conditioning can continue to keep the car at their preferred temperature.

You're not entirely to blame. They've also contributed to the depletion of our/their resources.

It was back in the 1980's, wasn't it, that the speed limits on interstates was lowered from 75 mph to 65, and I remember reading a comment to the effect that people who wouldn't slow down to save lives are now slowing down to save a few gallons of gas. Unfortunately, these days, some people won't slow down to save lives OR gas—because “I’m in a hurry!”

so true. I thought by sure we'd be living much cleaner and conserving more by now. I really did. now it's almost too late, and for some things it is too late, and yet other things too late was a long time ago.

What's done is don, but when we know better we can change the way we do things. I hope.
