On yesterday’s morning patrol we came upon a gang of poachers and caught them in the act having just killed a big bull Elephant . Our arrival on the scene scared the poachers off while they were trying to remove the Elephants tusks. It was so tragic as Elephant are wonderful creatures and these Elephant are our neighbours and we recognise many of them. Our whole team was saddened and badly affected by this incident. They killed the Elephant with a poisonous arrow and a spear. It was a horrendous death for this poor animal.

This also worries Predator Aware about Lions and Leopards and other wildlife in our area as there has been a recent increase in Elephant poaching in these Masai Mara wildlands.

Alas another one dead....They didnt get the Ivory but they got the life...

This horrible but it happens a lot and as far as I can work the killers out number the trackers or those who are fighting to catch them. Unfortunately, the way things are going there will be very little wildlife left unless greater step are to protect them and greater penalties imposed and carried out. Life in prison is a good way to go to help stop these poor animals from being killed. On the other hand there are game hunting reserves, where people pay to hunt wildlife. So, what does that mean its okay to kill the animals if you pay to do so and its not okay if you don't. Crazy.

Damn!! That is a horrid thing to see! When is the world going to reach out to Africa and do WHATEVER is necessarily to save these magnificent, unique, and irreplacable major fauna species??? What kind of Earth would we have left without Elephants, Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Lions, Rhinos, etc.? Are we just going to sit around like morons and watch them go extinct? I say bring in the army, navy, air force, and marines if necessary! We have hundreds of billions to spend on killing each other and nothing to save these precious creatures? Yep, I'm pretty upset about it!

Thanks for keeping on top of this for us, Gorilly, and well said, Animalib.

Poachers should be shot on sight. No mercy. It would still be a better death than what they subject these animals to.

Visit this link to find out more about the increase of elephant and rhino poaching...
http://baraza.wildlifedirect.org/2009/07/20/alarming-rise-in-elephant-and-rhino-poaching/

quote.: "According to the KWS, the rise in ivory poaching is partly caused by the CITES declaration to allow minimal trade from southern Africa. They say that this declaration created the illusion that it was OK to trade in ivory. If the number of seizures of ivory being witnessed today is anything to go by, then the KWS are right: the CITES declaration is indeed responsible for this mess."

Thannxxx... a sad ending in this chapter for this magnificent elephant... it is a constant struggle, a war going on in this buuuutiful continent of ours between the evil empire of poaching and the struggle to eleiminate them... the poachers are becoming more sophisticated and anti poaching units need to keep up with this new technology.. there must be a shoot to kill policy when it comes to poachers and no mercy shown... Patrols need to be stepped up and survellience increased

I wish I could catch these guys in the act. I would put a poison spear in them. In their private parts...
Then, while they were dying, I would tell them I am killing you so that I can salvage some of YOUR parts to sell... Then, after another while of suffering, I would tell them "Never Mind... YOUR parts are worthy! THANKS FOR PLAYING!"

This is what I will do to these poachers - Let them first dig their own grave, Let them get into their own grave, shoot them and you will have to make the effort of covering up. Many animals will be saved. Really wish I could do it!.

Of course, I have to say that many of these poachers WILL kill guards--and this has happened--so they need to be shot when they pose a threat to guards. On the other hand, poachers, if and once they can be converted to become conservationists, can help protect wildlife. There are instances of former poachers who now do tracking and also help turn people in. In that case, these poachers need to be caught and have the books thrown at them--be given long sentences--but then sentenced to work with conservationists afterwards.

There are over six and half billion human animals on this planet and we are causing a lot of destruction to the planet and the animals. The animals are suffering big time because of us, to kill those who are actually doing the hands on cruelty and killing of animals is very justified in my eyes. The animals are the innocent, defenseless and voiceless and the human criminals are getting away with it.

And my saying is; to be human is to be humane, therefore if you are not humane then you are not human and need to leave the planet.

Maybe they should legally be able to shoot poachers on sight. If you can't find it in your heart to feel for the loss of a life of an elephant, consider where the money they receive from this is going toward, arms and terrorism.

Those who are guilty of such heinous cruelty have forfeited their right to be called human, they are subhuman. While it is noble in some quarters to defend human life over animal life, there is a line that should never be crossed, the one that blindly defends subhuman monsters regardless of their crimes. When people become so hardened to the atrocities perpetrated by fellow "humans," then laws of nature and man will be horribly and heinously breached repeatedly with scant punishment. This is no way to live. "Humans" must be held responsible for their actions if there is to be order and equity. The punishment must fit the crime. Those responsible for poaching innocent, defenseless animals, as well as those who create the demand for illicit and ill-gotten animal parts, should all be severely and harshly punished. Anything less is a disgrace to all humankind and a tragedy for animals.

SPECIESISM: DISCRIMINATION IN FAVOR OF ONE SPECIES OVER ANOTHER, ESPECIALLY OF THE HUMAN SPECIES IN THE EXPLOITATION OF OTHER ANIMALS. This the dictionary definition of speciesism and this is what we are fighting. I do not agree the life of a homo sapiens always has more value than the life of any non-human animal. Is it because you don't believe that non-human animals have a soul? Well I don't believe that either - just look into the eyes of your dog or cat or an elephant and you can see their souls, that is, if you want to see. The problem, as I see it with not killing these poachers is that, even as we speak at this moment, they are planning their next poaching of an elephant and if they are put in jail, how long do you think it will be before they're released to kill more elephants? This is an issue much bigger than just one elephant being killed for his ivory, we are devasting the whole ecosystem of the continent of Africa by killing off all its wildlife, lions are disappearing, gorillas, chimpanzees, all the monkey species, tigers, hippos, rhinos. That is why we must, must, must fight speciesism. Speciesism at various times in the history of homo sapiens was used to justify slavery, as the proponents said that the "blacks" were not really human and that they had no souls. Same way the Nazis justified slaughter of Jews and all the others they considered sub-human. I match you animal life for human life any time. I'm not sure that man is the best animal at all. "Of all the animals man is the only one that is cruel, he is the only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it, knowing that is is pain. It is a trait that is unknown in any other animal". Mark Twain made this observation.

I don't believe all poachers inhibit this trait. It's a sad occurrrence of circumstances made by the desire of certain men. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally against poaching but they wouldn't do it if there wasn't a profit to be made. Someone is paying big time. That's disgusting.

Shaktiva so correct... alot of poachers are poor this is just a way for them to make a bit of change to feed usually thier starving familys...I do so see each side of the picture indeed...But doenst mean they need to keep doing it, the country really needs to step in and get some income comming in to these people...so indeed.

Just recently I heard of 3 magnificent African bull elephants that were killed by "sport hunters". I'm sorry, I just don't buy the poachers as the victims here. They want to make a lot of money. Maybe some of these people who don't have any other means of supporting themselves and their families had fewer children, they might not need to destroy the continent they call home.

Dear Eden, Gorrily,
The only thing that matters to me is that people don't take that can't be grown, raised or re-created within reasonable time.
You don't have to believe anything. But if you want a change of thoughts, of behaviour you'll have to know what creates circumstances. Circumstances are never black and white and by believing so only harms the cause you're trying to achieve.
These sporthunters are the rich guys that appearantly gained a fortune somewhere in their life, probably
by the likes of me and you by buying unknowingly their products. They will go on and on and likely they'll receive blessings from their community for creating so many jobs, for making such grand sportsfinals, music, movies...
But those being paid hungerwages for their slaughters are trying to provide for their families. I sometimes wonder if they know what sums of money others make of their catch. They're the ones I'm talking about when I think there's a chance for change. Asking people to abstain from families or making them, which is impossible where there's no birth-control, I find harsh. After all, it's our biology too. For them, big families are means of survival, of comfort. Putting them in the same line as sadistic egomaniacal slayers, I find unjustified.
Like the cocaine-farmer, the slaves that dig for gold and diamonds, the kids in sweatshops and many more of these evils that men do, WE, as consumers have a chance to decide on what we spend our money on and whether the companies, artists or sportsheroes prove to be correct in their producing but also on their spending. It is our obligation to know where our products come from, what costs it proved or will prove.
The ravaging of continents, happens everywhere. We are all to blame.

" An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"-M.Gandhi.
Turning a blind eye, doesn't make the change we wish to see.

the sad part ids the $$ factor! this was not a killing for food.this was just murder for $$$.so i can see no justice for those kind of poachers except to return the favor.slaughter them as they do the animals.i know we wont get paid for there bodies or anything from them, but think of the wqarm happy feeling in the animal comunity!! and why should people not be shot to save animals?? more and more species are disapearing everyday except the one that's causing the disapearence of all the rest!how long does it take an elephant to gestate? and to grow into adulthood? and humans?do the mathperson.unfortunately were aren't gonna run outta our species soon enough to save many others. thanks Gorilly.

They only way to stop this poaching is to make the consequences worse than the reward of the poaching. Also, of course, to eliminate the market for ivory. CITES must ban the sale of all ivory again. I wonder how many of the members of CITES are having their pockets lined to turn a blind eye to this poaching. Public outrage helps, but it would seem that the public is not outraged enough. I'm very cynical and I don't see any of the solutions actually happening. If these poachers were just trying to feed their families, they could get jobs as Rangers who go on the patrols to stop this decimation.
