While we'd usually be the first to welcome the appearance of more trees, it may not be the most favorable outcome in the high Arctic, reports ScienceNews' Janet Raloff. Hummmmmmmm Interesting. Okay Chis give me your thoughts on this one. Gorilly

Hey Stephanie - Usually when I have been addressed in a news discription it is in the form of an insult - this is a plesent change LMAO!!!! Anyway, I think this is a good example of the saying "there is a place for everything, and everything should be in its place" (sort of, don't know the exact words). I have seen this claim before - it seems reasonable to me that it could be a problem. But I don't know enough of the math to determine if more heat will be absorbed by reduced albito or reduced absorbtion due to the CO2 stored in the trees. Given the extent of rainforest loss (see the item linked below), I think we have plenty of places to be encouraging more trees!!! Plus, I don't think polar bears care for trees in their homes LOL

Rainforest loss in the Amazon tops 200,000 square miles, new figures from Brazilian government

New figures from the Brazilian government show that 10,088 square miles of rain forest were destroyed in the 12 months ending in August 2004. Deforestation in the Amazon in 2004 was the second worst ever as rain forest was cleared for cattle ranches and soy farms. Scientists are concerned that widespread deforestation in the Amazon could have global consequences through species extinction and climate change

A bit out of date, but you get the picture :)

Well, this is one place seemingly I can not advocate tree planting. But at least plant them all the more in Alaska...........

A forest is in an acorn.
Proverb of Unknown Origin......PLANT TREES WHEREVER........

Oh for sure Bette - The Boreal forest (such as those in Alaska) are critically important for their role in storing carbon - and we are losing those fast too - another place to be planting more trees :)

a bit of information on that subject:

Boreal Forest is World’s Carbon Vault

Breakthrough maps released today at the United Nations conference on climate change illustrate the vastly important role of Canada’s Boreal Forest as the world’s largest terrestrial carbon storehouse.

Many in society love trees, pass them everyday withought much notice. But, when it is boiling hot out it is very nice to find that tree to sit under.

If suddenly all the world lost all of its' trees all of us would sit up & take notice......In other words we do not miss something until it is gone.
Our world as we know it still would be nothing more than licorice highways, graveyard grey building and people running like mad ants without........TREES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Obviously the trees are here for a purpose as much as for decoration of streets & mountain tops.......Bushes & flowers are great but nothing beats a grande ol' tree for natural beauty!!!!!!!!!

PLANT TREES FOR LIFE...........

Of course I tend to be an action oriented type of person, so I would just like to point out the awesome program run by the Nature Conservancy. The Billion Trees Project. It just costs a buck to plant a tree - in the correct location of course LOL

Thanks Gorilly Girl. Noted. Thanks everyone for your opinions, all very good. Cheers. Bette is so right about how we take our dear old trees for granted... it's horrible that such old souls are ignored by humans the way they are.
