The actions of vigilantes like George Zimmerman aren't an exception--because racism is woven into the fabric of a system based on inequality and injustice.


WHEN GEORGE Zimmerman stalked Trayvon Martin because the African American teenager looked "suspicious," it was racist vigilantism, pure and simple. Even conservative politicians and pundits have been forced to concede that Zimmerman was wrong to single out Trayvon for no other reason than his hoodie and the color of his skin.

But every day, in state after state and city after city, the same racist vigilantism takes place, and it's perfectly legal and officially sanctioned--because the perpetrators are representatives of the American criminal injustice system.

Under the "stop and frisk" policy in New York City, hundreds and hundreds of police officers do each day what George Zimmerman did when he saw Trayvon Martin. They're under orders to target young men of color.

One of the defining characteristics of primates is that we're "social." This means we create TRIBES...and they protect us and give us "family" and teach us and sustain us.

They also cause wars, hatred and tensions.

It's our curse.

The whole concept of "racism" is just that--a CONCEPT. Designed to foster tribal identities.

Racism is still very much the law at both the state and the federal level throughout the U.S. It is far too easy to pawn it off as just being "a Southern thing.' That way the rest of us get to avoid taking responsibility for the institutional racism in our state judicial and law enforcement systems. The federal government is no less racist either. Having a black president does not mean that blacks aren't disproportionately targeted at the federal level. Euro-Americans commit all the crimes that African-Americans do; but they are substantially less likely to be arrested, prosecuted, convicted, and/or incarcerated for the same crimes.

Good article, Kit. I tend to agree, but also think it is not as 'simple' as some think. As in any form of discrimination, there is always more than color, religion or sexual preference. It is what we are taught from the time we are children and most everyone, regardless of color, religion, sex or preference, has been indoctrinated in some way or another. Some of it simply needs to be consciously discredited in our own mind, using the intelligence we acquire through life and less 'generalizing' of groups of people as a whole. I really wonder though, if most people are able to do that.

It seems that this very enmity between groups is still being pushed --- the most recent example I can think of is Rmoney trying to drive a wedge between Blacks and Hispanics.

I think that we all have the potential for an element of racism and bigotry within us. But we have to challenge ourselves to overcome the racism. It requires work but it is so worthwhile.

I beg (please?) to differ with Pam who says racism is a CONCEPT -- No, it isn't! It's a MINDSET & an EMOTIONAL STATE. Racism is the attitude and the feelings of hatred &/or fear for certain groups. The feelings are hatred and/or fear; the mindset provides the rationale- it tells you why those feelings are justified: why discrimination is justified; why insults and insulting or demeaning behavior are justified; why harassment is justified; why racial profiling is justified; why violence against your target group is justified; & ultimately, why genocide is justified. We've had quite a few genocides in recent history - what are they but racism taken to its ultimate extreme? A concept doesn't kill, but attitudes & out-of-control crazy emotions do.

Racism is the end of empathy. If I see an African or an Asian or a Latino mother crying over the loss of a child, I empathize because I see the African or the Asian or the Latino woman as a woman like me; I can feel (or believe I can feel) what she is feeling: she is a human being just like me. A racist, however, will not feel empathy because he/she is convinced that Africans or Asians or Latinos are NOT like him or her. For the racist, his 'humanity' does not include these groups.

If Zimmerman wasn't so afraid of the 'Black Male' he wouldn't have made all those 911 calls that are part of the record & now public knowledge - he was obsessed with African American (& African & West Indian) men & boys and the DANGER he felt they represented to the point of calling 911 every time he saw a 'black male' walking around...even a nine-yr-old child !

The order of these top-ten cover-ups ranges from the more credible 'BS' (Belief Systems) at the top, to the least credible 'BS' at the bottom. Of course, beyond the 'BS' of cherished illusions and willful ignorance is awakening with prescient knowing for metamorphosis of these things:

If his Constitutional principles win and the privatized Fed is eliminated, the corporatocracy loses power to monopolize the physical and human resources of the public. The Internet has provided pictures and videos of thousands of people attending Ron Paul rallies while Santorum or Romney get a few hundred people to their meetings, yet supposedly win in blatantly rigged corporate media polls, even when only 1-2% of the vote has been tabulated. 7 - Disease care has been privatized for profit and the cost is 'socialized' with health deficits in the public-at-large. Corporate disease treatment incentives have inverted, subverted and perverted preventive health-building policies; a pound of cure is now worth 16x's an ounce of prevention. A covert population reduction agenda via chemtrails, fluoride, vaccines and GMO foods is extremely profitable, making a killing (literally) for the medical-industrial complex. There's nothing that makes this sick system more self-evident than the 'Universal Self Care' that could globally provide practical holistic healing protocols for anyone with an Internet connection.

6 - The world's fastest growing economies, representing 42% of world population -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) -- are abandoning the U.S. dollar as their reserve currency. That's the REAL issue behind corporate media propaganda about attacking Iran which has been 'sanctioned' into selling it's oil to BRICS. 5 - The boob-tube indoctrinated masses seem to be oblivious to the key elements of tyranny and oppression reflected in the NDAA signed into law on New Year's Eve, 2011 by the Obama Administration. This law nullifies the Bill of Rights and eliminates any right to due process for Americans. It allows the government to arrest, detain, interrogate and torture any person, for any reason, even if they are never charged with a crime. Similarly, on March 16 of this year, President Obama signed into effect an executive order that seizes control over all food resources across the country, including food, seeds, livestock, farm equipment, food processing facilities, and animal feed. This is written in clear English, right in the order itself.

4 - Increasing UFO activity is openly reported in nations worldwide, but black-out in the U.S. corporate media. Full disclosure of the ET presence and crop-circle creators would blow the lid on the long-term collaboration of secret government agencies with ET's on advanced technologies hundreds of years beyond what the public believes exists now. To say that racism is a ploy used by devious people against the masses is completely true. Remember Nazi Germany where Hitler preached that the Jewish people were sub-human. He did this to unite the majority of the German people under one cause, his! Even though in the end, his bigotry and hate almost destroyed Germany and the German people, (simply because they believed him!)

Sadly, people are made scapegoats to satisfy weak willed, brainwashed, egomaniacs, whose self-esteem is so low that they have to always look for someone to blame, look down on, and manipulate to suit their agendas. When I was younger back in the seventies, I grew up with friends who were Hispanic, White, and Black. Back then, no one gave a damn about skin color, culture, or nationality. We lived our lives out believing everyone was equal. We ate together, partied together, and were supportive of each other when times were hard. We even stayed in each other’s homes when need be, and were accepted totally by each other’s families.

With that said, it is also horrible, that kids can be “programmed to hate,” by whoever is in charge of them. Sometimes, people impress their prejudices and biased views upon their young over a perceived slight, even if it is not real and based upon some type of fantasy or stereotype that often belongs to others with similar thoughts. Now these days, we have the right-wing realizing that they are politically doomed in the near future, and they are using massive race baiting and scapegoating in order to prolong their reign, not caring how many innocent people they hurt! Even so, in the end a politically Democratic, liberal, and multi-cultural America is coming soon, whether they like it or not!

"American justice" is a contradiction in terms, says the article. I think Lynn is right, we all have it in us (like Jews are racsist towards Germans - this is not individual, but Germans are still collectively blamed for the Holocaust, which happened about 70 years ago, Black people and Hispanics are still the scapegoats to the average American,and serveral Brits are racsist towards people from India.....the list is countless). It's all about "them vs us", and it hasn't got to do with intelligence. We ought to look for what unites us, instead of looking for which seperates us. This isn't easy, but worth trying. One day I smiled towards a black woman, and she got me wrong and called out "F*ck you"! This doesn't put me off - one day somebody will smile back...
