Climate change is helping make the U.S. more hospitable for diseases ranging from Chagas to dengue fever.

Diseases once thought to be rare or exotic in the United States are gaining a presence and getting new attention from medical researchers who are probing how immigration, limited access to care and the impacts of climate change are influencing their spread.

Illnesses like schistosomiasis, Chagas disease and dengue are endemic in warmer, wetter and poorer areas of the world, often closer to the equator. According to the World Health Organization, almost 1 billion people are afflicted with more than one tropical disease.

Caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses, these diseases are spread through bites, excrement and dirty water stemming from substandard housing and sanitation. Consequently, the United States has been largely isolated from them.

But Americans are traveling more, and as tropical vacationers return home, they may unwittingly bring back dangerous souvenirs. Immigrants from endemic regions are also bringing in these diseases, some of which can lie dormant for years. All the while, the flies, ticks and mosquitoes that spread these illnesses are moving north as rising temperatures make new areas more welcoming.

the potential changes to our world are astounding....and stunning that so many still aren't willing to believe or make changes that will stop the worst of global climate change from happening (even if they don't believe its all man made)....great article, unfortunately, so few read Scientific American these days....too busy reading People or other brain draining materials.....

So sad but true Kit. But this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as how we are destroying the earth and along with it eventually, ourselves. Humanity is quickly approaching the point of no return, where worldwide chaos will reign because of our gross mistreatment of the planet.

This only gives further credence to the reality of climate change. Not only do we get new diseases but there will be host of drugs to go along with them. When will people face reality that this is happening and that all the diseases, the crazy weather, forest fires, etc. are because of what they re doing? How many times do we have to bang them over their heads to make them get it?

Kate, they will never get it. The greed of humanity, us men specifically; will soon ruin the Earth at the rate we are going, sad but true.

I was so happy to move from Mexico before mosquito season. Saw some Day of the Dead altars in the name of it's victims. It is called "bone break fever". With cities cutting back on vital public health services, there will be more skitter breeding places going un noticed.
If you have a kid's wading pool, keep on the look out for mosquito larve, they look like tiny black cooked shrimps, and they mature fast.Old practice was to dump oil on the water. Don't do it.

To think that a large portion of US citizens do not believe in global warming or Darwian evolution is truly frightening.

We should cut CO2 emissions, imho, to halt global warming, otherwise there will be many problems.

There is overwhelming evidence that things are a'changing, everything that is, except the fact that many fail to recognize the educated facts or chose to stick their heads in the sand and ignore them..It will only be when OUR populace is ravaged by some of these diseases that they will sit up and take notice. Then, "the blame game" will begin..Unfortunately, there is no crueler teacher than experience..ask anyone who has devoted their time to work in far-off countries who have been dealing with the tragedies of these "unheard" of diseases..I guess I can sum this up by saying - They tried to tell us..Sad..
And Dave C. - I couldn't agree with you more - if it's "fluff" they read it - if it's facts, forget it - give them more "fluff" - it comforts them somehow..If they take time to READ at all..
