A 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed at least 87 people and injured over 400 others in northwestern Iran on Saturday, state TV said.

Iran's main news channel said the quake hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province at 4:53 p.m. local time (GMT 12:23), also damaging hundreds of homes.

The TV quoted Khalil Saei, local Crisis Committee chief, as saying that 30 people were killed in Ahar, 40 in Varzaqan and 17 others in Haris.

The broadcast said at least 60 villages sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent, while 4 other villages had been totally leveled to the ground.

The TV said at least three aftershocks measuring 6.0, 4.7 and 4.1 jolted the same area and were felt in a wide region near the Caspian Sea.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one earthquake every day on average, although the vast majority are so small they go unnoticed.

So far in every serious crisis that has hit any where on the globe the people of Care2 have stepped - up, put aside any political or personal issues and given what ever aid and support they could.

I don't care what group or support you use, just please let's show our compassion for those who have just lost family, dear friends, their homes and neighborhoods.

Since I just learn of this early this morning I have given a donation to two groups that will be of help and are welcomed in almost every country across the globe. One to help the people and one that will help the animals.

Thanks for reminding people, Kit, that animals're usually among the victims of natural disasters and need help.

In the past I've usually seen IFAW get quickly involved in natural disaster relief for the critters (they helped with Japan's earthquake animal victims) - its website's here and money's always needed:

After 9/11 there was video of the populace in Iran dancing in the street .

I pray to God that nobody here in America shames us by doing this now.

I just read an article on NBC that has the death toll at 180 now.

I read a few of the comments, and while there didn't appear to be any dancing in the street, there are some poor excuses for human beings in the U.S.

I'm hoping the Mullahs and Ayatollahs were on the non-survivor lists.

Many thanks for your thoughtfulness Kit... The beauty of your true colors always shine through.
May all of us join in helping in whatever way we can...There's plenty goodhearted people in Iran, just like everywhere else.
