Tell Walmart to Stop Hurting Pigs

At Farm Sanctuary, we spend our lives with farm animals, and we wouldn’t eat them regardless of how they are treated prior to slaughter. There is no moral or rational difference between consuming a dog or a pig, a cat or a chicken.

But we also work to eliminate the worst abuses of farm animals, including “gestation crates,” the body-sized cages that immobilize most breeding pigs in the United States. In these crates, pregnant pigs are unable to engage in most of their important natural behaviors. They are never able to turn around or even lie down comfortably — day and night, for their entire lives.

Find out more about gestation crates.

Over the past decade, we’ve worked with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to eliminate gestation crates in 9 states so far. HSUS has parlayed that success into pledges by dozens of major corporations, including Smithfield Foods and Hormel Foods (maker of Spam), to phase out the crates. Our work has been so successful that even former crate apologists now say that the crates have to go.

But Wal-Mart refuses to budge, despite a recent investigation by Mercy for Animals that documented hideous abuse by a Wal-Mart supplier.
Please take action now:

Post this action alert on Twitter and to your Facebook.

Link to Farm Sanctuary’s blog about Wal-Mart.

And then tell Wal-Mart that crates have got to go!

Message for petition:

Eliminate Gestation Crates from Your Supply Chain

As you know, in gestation crates, pigs cannot even turn around. They become mentally unstable from stress, and their muscles and bones waste away. Cooped in their own waste, their bodies become covered with sores.

Please let me know that you will join the ranks of Smithfield, Hormel, and Costco by pledging to phase out your purchase of products from pigs who come from systems that use gestation crates.

***Personalize you letter, let these people [Wal Mart] know how you feel and why you are signing***

Please sign and share - thank you! >^..^<

Noted and gladly signed This confinement of these intelligent pigs should not be allowed anywhere in the world. Just so awful to know that they spend their short lives in this hell. Only to killed for mankind. I wish it were a crime to eat meat, then just maybe no more of these horrors.

Thanks Kit, signed with pleasure. Here in Australia many pork producers are now going back to free range. They find it easier than the new regulations that have been coming in over years. Sadly only some but not all.

Thanks for signing and supporting this cause. When possible I have sent Green Stars. To those I can sent green stars, please accept my deep thanks for supporting an effort to pressure on Wal Mart and "food" producers to be humane.

Gladly Signed & Shared. You're 100% right Kit, when you say there's no difference consuming dog, cat, etc.!!! The unspeakable conditions the factory farm animals languish in & are subjected to, at the very least, must improve drastically!!!!! In the past I have spoken to people over at Hormel and they allude to NOTHING---no wrong doing, when terrible cases of terrible abuse were documented--makes me sick! Thanks my friend for shining a light on this so much!!!~
