The result for the citizen is that we can pay hundreds or even thousands for each prescription. With a more competitive market, as in generic prescriptions, the same drugs are reduced to a low as just a few dollars for each prescription filled.

Petition Content:

Close Tax Loop Holes for Pharmaceutical Companies

Target: President Obama, The United States Senate, The United States House of Representatives

Currently the marginal tax rate for corporations within the United States is 35%, however, that rate does not include the many tax loop holes.

If we look at just the Pharmaceutical Companies, we find that because of the many tax loopholes and tax breaks given, they pay one of the lowest corporate taxes in the country. Paying at 5.6 percent of total profits earned. Of the billions of dollars earned by these corporations, a commonly used excuse for this tax rate allowance is for monies spent for the common good, or research.

First, we should consider how much of this “research” is for new drugs or just to replicate drugs that are selling well. Next, we should consider that many if not most of these drugs are of little medical value, while most of this money not paid in taxes is used for marketing and selling these drugs.

Should we not also consider that government already spends more than 30 billion dollars of tax payer money each year for bio-medical research through the National Institutes of Health?

The result for the citizen is that we can pay hundreds or even thousands for each prescription. With a more competitive market, as in generic prescriptions, the same drugs are reduced to a low as just a few dollars for each prescription filled.
************

I ask each of you to sign and share this petition. I do believe we all need some relief from the extreme price gouging in cost of prescriptions.

As Sarah would say, "You betcha!" This should be a no brainer - companies build huge industrial parks and do much of the same research over and over just to get more $$$$. They charge exorbitant rates for pills that cost them little to make - this should be a no-brainer. Thanks, Kit!

From what I've read, just since the 1980's companies have reduced investment in Research & Development to increase payouts to CEO's & shareholders. It seems like that's counterintuitive, but they certainly have gotten richer - so I assume these scams are lucrative (especially when NOT paying taxes is both allowed & Encouraged by loopholes!;)
It seems like most companies are trying to make ALL their profits from fewer sales, rather than making profit from numerous smaller sales. Prices on Everything have gone UP, even though nobody's pay (well, Except CEO's & CONgre$$) has increased.

Thanks Kit - signed with pleasure. When these Companies introduce a new drug they are protected by a Patent so no other company can produce that drug until the patent has finished. Most Patents are for 10 to 15 years - this enables the Company to get back it's R&D money and make a profit. Generic drugs/brands can be manufactured after that Patent has expired and the price of these drugs fall because there is no longer a monopoly. Sorry to keep banging on about Australia but I think it is important to hear what happens in other countries. Under our National system the PBS if you are on any type of pension or low income earner you pay $5.90 for 99% of your prescriptions - reach 52 scripts within a calendar year - you go onto the Safety net - nil charges. For those that fall outside of this they pay $30.00 per script or less if the drug has been available for many years (Generic or not) - reach 52 scripts - you go onto the Safety net and pay $5.90. This applies to all Australian citizens and permanent residents. We pay for this scheme through our taxes.

Kit B. (276)
Sunday March 24, 2013, 7:02 pm

Remove the patent protection, most of them are very slight variations in drugs that are already out there. We are paying them, we pay hundreds for a single script. Why should we pay them again by giving them more tax loop holes? Much of the research comes from tax money through the government investments in bio-medical research. I think this whole thing is a scam. If our government negotiated prices like other governments do for their citizens than perhaps these dollar gouging drug companies would finally fall in line, and learn to do business for the customer.

Signed --- well written Kit!

I know in Canada, the provincial governments negotiate with the pharmaceuticals for bulk prices resulting in lower costs than those in the US. In some provinces, the healthcare covers all pharmaceuticals, and in others like BC, coverage of pharmaceuticals is operated like insurance --- you have an annual deductible after which it is fully covered. My most profound wish for Americans is universal health care and prescription coverage like we have --- it isn't perfect, nothing is, but people aren't left out.

You have that right on the patents.

Thanks Kit, These are International Companies with International Patents so I think that may be difficult in removing them. The Australian Government also negotiates direct with them and if the price is to high it doesn't go on the list - they give them the price that it will be accepted for the PBS - very rare that the Companies hold out for too long. Maybe America is subsidizing the rest of the world - when it comes to the price of a prescription. For interest sake: give me the name of a common drug and what you pay and I will try to get you our maximum price, also bear in mind if you were admitted into a public hospital here even if you needed drugs they would be free.

As usual, American consumers are being raked over the coals by American companies --and our government is letting it happen. The same drugs are sold for much less in foreign countries. I believe in research and development, but what they're charging for the drugs, combined with the tax breaks they receive, is an awful lot of money. Too much of it is spent trying to convince people that they need their newest drugs --whether they do or not. They're in the business of improving health, but they're also in the business of making money. I think the greed factor has taken precedence over the humanitarian one.

The researchers’ estimate is based on the systematic collection of data directly from the industry and doctors during 2004, which shows the U.S. pharmaceutical industry spent 24.4% of the sales dollar on promotion, versus 13.4% for research and development, as a percentage of US domestic sales of US$235.4 billion.

These Patents are in place now and have been for who knows how long but there is this huge discrepancy happening, look at the facts. Yes, ask for the Patents to be removed, I don't think that will make a difference. You will still pay hundreds and we will still pay a pittance. Kit, I think I'm that troll that you need a vaccine for!!!!
