**First, please watch or listen while you work to VIDEO at VISIT SITE. This is really remarkable information.

"Where do multinationals pay taxes and how much?" Gaining insight from international tax experts, Dutch public broadcasting VPRO's Backlight director Marije Meerman ('Quants' & 'Money & Speed'), takes a look at tax havens, the people who live there and the routes along which tax is avoided globally.

Those routes go by resounding names like 'Cayman Special', 'Double Irish', and 'Dutch Sandwich'. A financial world operates in the shadows surrounded by a high level of secrecy. A place where sizeable capital streams travel the world at the speed of light and avoid paying tax. The Tax Free Tour is an economic thriller mapping the systemic risk for governments and citizens alike. Is this the price we have to pay for globalized capitalism?

At the same time, the free online game "Taxodus" by Femke Herregraven is launched. In the game, the player can select the profile of a multinational and look for the global route to pay as little tax as possible.

This documentary addresses global issues that are in turn our own issues. I can not stress how much each person needs to watch this, or at least listen. It is an wakening.

We ARE already wide awake! Agree, great video, though nothing new to me. This is what the globalization opponents and worldwide protesters predicted to us all over a decade ago with their warnings!
So, where IS the money? Certainly well protected OUT OF REACH for where it is needed.
Not sure if that game "Taxodus" is to be recommended.., might serve as example to be copied. It is time to look for a possible high taxation rather than a low, worldwide and especially in those countries with the most tax evaders! Thx Kit, great post!

Gotto love this comment : " Edward Kerr 2 days ago

How lucky we are here in the US because our wealthy are "job creators" and our financial problems are caused by "welfare queens", not tax-dodgers." -----

Honestly, I was glad to hear that Cyprus's biggest bank will most probably suck out 60%, not 40% from the very wealthiest folks' accounts! These are the ones that have the rest of their fortune in tax heavens! Same as Greece. I do know this from the many times I've traveled to the mediterranian islands and mainland Greece.

Thanks Angie - I have flagged as well.

it sure did, no question, and much was also new to me. I meant the general info that's been out there for long.

Just how arrogant they all are. Georgie Bush Jr was in the Caymen's addressing businessmen during the last presidential campaign. No wonder Mitt Romney didn't want his finances made public. His offshoreaccounts may operate in a legal gray zone.
We don't even know how much money has left this country but it might well settle some of our debt had it been taxed.

I am thankful that Swiss banks are cooperating with IRS investigations now--so much of that idea of untouchable went with the secrecy Swiss and other accounts were perceived to have(how perception influences reality?).
I am offended to see the US on lists of top corporate tax havens--would we be without DE? Do we need to add ND to DE to change that? Or is what Bush did to us sufficient for that ranking?
May comment more when I can handle listening to the entirety Kit...a subject that can make my blood boil.

I fear that the whole truth may never be known Kit, but hopefully enough to guide sufficiency of actions to remedy the immoral inequities and harms from what is now.

Can't argue that. Some truths remain in the mind of those who created the problems.

Although I was aware of this in principle I had no idea of the scope of it all. Capitalism and globalism in no way can be used in the same sentence as democracy. And the fact that the former kingpins in these global monsters are now sitting in key positions in our governments is appalling.

I have to make this additional comment. To me this is the crux of just about everything that is wrong with our economy, the environment, inequality, and human rights. I have shared this on Facebook,"liked" it on You Tube and am forwarding it to my friends.

I do highly recommend that everyone WATCH this film. I'd give you a star Kit but your daily quota is already given and you deserve a bundle full of them.

We owe gratitude to the Journalist, Film-makers, whistle blowers, and slooths of all types that are shedding light and exposing what is going on, for this affects all of us. Chris Hayes had said, it will take the upper middle class to bring this down as the poor and working poor have already been suffering under this for years around the world, but they have little power to fight back, when you are daily fighting just to survive.

But as the greed consumes all the more, it is now reaching into the more comfortable pockets of society too deep. Here one will find the more highly educated, the Judge that was in this film, Accountants that can't say particulars but can speak in generalities like in this film, and those who are being pushed onto the other side of the ever wide gulf between the haves and the have nots, the abused and the abusers of Capitalism on steroids.

So watch the film people because it is important to know what is truly going on, you must stop poking each other in the eye and get the full picture as the Eagle that flies high above. This film will allow you to look as an eagle for it is only by understanding and educating oneself do you know what side of the fence to stand on. The Oligarchy in this Capitalistic frenzy will try to keep your eyes off the ball, the world one of the people in the film said, they try to remain "invisible" but their actions have a direct inpact upon your life.

I know some are quite knowlegable, seems Angelika is well versed in this, perhaps others may think they have it down but will gain some more insight into things by this film like Craig mentions, but what I do hope is that those who have little to no clue what is taking place start to educate themselves this way. I realize for some it isn't the most comfortable for them, but believe me, you need to move out of your comfort zone, for whether you understand this or not, your comfort zone is being changed. This affects all of our passions be it animals, human rights or the environment, so this is important for all of us to get a grasp onto.

Watching is always easier for some than reading, so grab those carrot sticks, the peanuts and bowel of popcorn sit back and learn. We all need to do our part, the film was made, they did their part, the investigations to make this film was done, they did their part, Kit placed it on C2, she did her part, now do your part, watch and share. I have watched now I will share.

First let me make the civil comments. Thank you Kit for posting this, a million green stars to you. Second, thank you Sheryl for the forward. Now, I am so f.....g pissed, I cannot see straight. Talk about a bitter pill to swallow. I have heard of off-shore accounts, and I had a basic knowledge of the kinds of people who used them, but I was woefully ignorant of the enormity of what I have just learned. I think I am too angry right now to make a coherent statement.

Sheryl G (363)
Monday April 1, 2013, 4:32 pm
Indeed Tamara, this even went beyond what I had thought I understood. We may not like what we learn, but until it is learned what is going on, then we do not know what to do battle with or how to correct things. Everything always starts by educating ourselves.

SON of a bitch!!

Are these greedy bastards so stupid that they dont REALIZE how much they really have? Um, NO. Sadly, they realize it and want it ALL. And those that can put an end to it, are paid off so basically we are screwed.

I didnt catch the name of the lady in the parliament meeting but I wish she would have continued to rip them new ones. She was too polite! I would have been dancing behind the idiots encouraging her to continue!

So they are lending money to govts in debt to keep the world running? SO in essence they OWN THE WORLD. OMG.
Did anyone catch what was said at the end by that lady in the meeting that was so funny? I couldnt understand her.
and BTW, starbucks coffee SUCKS.. $7 for a cup of coffee?
what are we gonna do people?????

Kit B (276)

I agree Gina, when she apologized, I was sorry she did that. She was a tiger, then a kitten. To bad, because they deserved all she was saying and more. It's being right on the verge of accountability, then no.

Yep, they do own the world. While the rest of us were rearing families and working at our jobs, they were working their Machiavellian schemes. Now we reap what they have sown. They have the Wheat, we get chaff.

I guess it's been too long since I bought Starbucks, I thought it was still $5.00 for a very bad cup of coffee.

Thanks and many blessings to Kit for posting this and for Dandelion for telling me about it! Whilst I had guessed a lot of this - to see the facts and figures is very alarming and very infuriating! May God bless and protect all those investigating and fighting against this criminality - for so I think it is.

During the clips from the UK Public Accounts Committee investigating the Corporate non-payers of tax, it is just as well no-one could hear what I was saying to the corporate liars as Margaret Hodge MP pinned the corporate liars to the wall and made them speak part of the truth. ( - Margaret Hodge is one of the few current MPs that I admire - she really is a good person - and patently afraid of no-one!

I am very afraid that if these unbearably greedy and blinkered tax avoiders do not see sense and soon - there really will be a revolution - as the French MEP said. Help! The wealth inequalities are very like the late 1700s - and we know a couple of bloody revolutions that happened then don't we? And history does have a habit of repeating itself doesn't it? Help!

Green stars all over the place!

Here's a bit from the BBC article on the Public Accounts Committee
"Like the other executives, Mr Brittin insisted that nothing his employer did was illegal, prompting the committee chair, Ms Hodge, to say: "We're not accusing you of being illegal, we're accusing you of being immoral."

"Google's UK unit paid just 6m to the Treasury in 2011 on UK turnover of 395m, according to the Telegraph."

That reminds me of what is often said on the BBC - on Have I Got News For You and other programmes, that all the multinationals have to do to avoid being charged tax is to take the head of the Tax Service out to lunch and the need to pay taxes magically seems to go away for them!

If the multinationals had all paid tax there would be NO RECESSION - in the EU alone over a thousand billion has gone missing! Argh!

Will return to review this video again later - thanks Kit and Dandelion!

Adding my thanks for posting, Kit. So glad I took the time to watch. During Occupy, I logged into the Global Revolution website and spent hours reading the chat, where I learned the framework of what this film explains. I've gained some info about multinational corps since then, but this film finally explained all the missing pieces. While feeling helpless, it seemed the final answer given near the end is a citizens' revolt.

I'm concerned about these multinationals now wanting a "Territorial Tax System" bill passed here in the U.S. It would exempt most foreign profits earned by American multinational corps. from taxation in the U.S.

So instead of paying taxes they are lending the money they have stashed away in the tax havens to nations with ailing economies like Greece? Aieeeeeee!!!! "Steal a little and they throw you in jail, steal a lot and they make you king" Bob Dylan.
I really enjoyed the UK Parlamentory woman questioner of the CEO's from Starbucks, Amazon and one other one ....I would have liked to see more film footage of all the questioning...Excellent sharp retorts!
Thank you Dandelion for passing this along to me, and thank you Kit for posting this important video...

We need a lot more of those women, we seem to have our in Elizabeth Warren, but they shouldn't feel the need to apologize, for the ones who are ripping us off, even if it falls into the grey areas of legal, certainly are not offering an apology.

We need to tighten up these regulations and loopholes. I understand about running a business for profit, but what is being done is way beyond that. It's profits at all cost, it's runaway with the whole pie and leave nothing for others and that is a destruction upon society that is happening around the world. Its not good and it must be reigned in.
