Somehow...for some reason in reading this article, about David McCullough, I am reminded by Pink Floyd singing 'Money'. Seems fitting. What a laugh.!!! Thanks, Kit. ;-)

I think this is particularly funny because David McCullough is such a stuffed shirt.

Noted. Having heard of him and his nonfiction books but never read them I really didn't see humor - just the same thing Gran Pat did...Money by Pink Floyd. Thanks for introducing me - now I'll just have to figure out where I want t put him...maybe by Laurell K Hamilton...naw, better by Stephanie Laurens, after all they're both historical...maybe Janet Evanovich and Stephanie Plum...doubt he'd want to be near to J D Robb...

The song that comes to my mind is also called Money but is from Cabaret--very dark humor of the seamier side of humanity.

Exactly right, McCullough has become a history hack. He sucks the money and joy out of history with his ponderous, stentorian delivery.

Another ex-McCullough reader eh Alan? It's not that his history is inaccurate, though sometimes sloppy, but he has become so taken with himself, so sure of his audience he no longer makes an effort in his books.
